The importance of the Chavez hand shake is the report you did just now, on the jump in book sales from #54,000 to number 2. Everywhere in Latin America, enemies of America are going to use the picture of Chavez smiling and being with the President as proof that Chavez is now legitimate, that he's acceptable, He's a dictatorial figure, he's an anti American figure, but what I find distressing is this administration is opposed to looking for oil off shore, but the President bows to the Saudi King...
It does matter to the world...
He's doing his best to lead the Fox News cult, isn't he? Obama is just so weak on North Korea too. Teabaggers like Newt will stare in the face of history and go blank. The Teabagger King will lie about all things and be strong for his people. Nixon/Brezhnev, Reagan/Gorbachev none of those great Republican presidents ever shook hands with dictators. Nope, that never happened. George Bush never bowed to a Saudi King. Nope, never happened. Poppy Bush never used cash he got from the Saudis to bail out his son over bad business deals. Nope, never.
What crime has President Obama committed? He's trying to restore the image of America overseas to the rest of the world and he's being successful at it. And the Teabagger King can't have that.

It's a rare day when Today ever has a balanced report on President Obama. Would you make the decision for yourself, without undue party rhetorical influence? Would you even try to meet with heads of state, or just assume that all negative assumptions are correct, inevitable, and persistent?
I am not the President of the US. Nor are you. I have the luxury of declining to meet with the likes of those you mention. But as President, that luxury is not afforded. As President, I would meet with all of them. And I would be Civil, and respectful. I would be so because it would be in the best interest of the country, though perhaps not in my own private interest.
He shook hands, for Christ’s sake. He was civil. No more should be read into this meeting than that. I don’t know if we will have better relations with Venezuela now, or not. I do know that there is now a better chance that we will, because now there is evidence of dialog. Without any dialog, there will be no change.

Anyone who knows anything about American history knows that the recent tea bag rallies have no authentic connection with the original tea party in Boston.
The Boston Tea Party was not about taxation per se, but about taxation without representation. The colonial patriots understood that it is impossible for a government to function without taxes. What they objected to was not having a say in the matter. They wanted representatives.
Today Americans do have representatives. They are the elected members of Congress, state legislatures, city councils, etc. Love or hate these representatives, we do have representation.
So the historical premise of the tea parties is bogus.
We now know that the entire nationwide turnout for all the events was in the neighborhood of 250,000.
And how and why did that many people turn out? Because of Fox News, and generous funding provided by the right-wind multi-millionaires over at FreedomWorks, Dick Armey's nut-bag organization.
Fox News provided logistical support, non-stop promotion, and TV personalities to speak at the rallies.
Most times, political organizers hope and pray that journalists will cover their event. In the case of the tea parties, the so-called journalists at Fox News were at the center of the event, while pretending that they were just covering it.
So, what does it all prove? That there is a permanent substratum of angry Americans who can be worked up into a frenzy. Fortunately, thus far, there are not that many of them. To draw only 250,000 participants nationwide is not very impressive when one recalls that the anti-Iraq War rallies drew in the millions nationwide--without any network's sponsorship.
Also, note where the largest crowds were. Most drew only small numbers. Even Jacksonville, Florida--which is heavily Bush country--drew only "a few dozen," according to one news report.
The big tea parties were in Texas, where there were cries of "Secede!" "Secede!" It sounds like the kind of people who rejoiced over JFK's assassination in Dallas have reproduced in their own kind.
