NY tabloid press attacks VP Biden's daughter

Craig Crawford has a great piece outlining the hit job the NY Post and Daily News did on Joe Biden's daughter Ashley Biden. I know some of the sports reporters from both papers and they are good guys and do not get into politics, but this story is really f&*ked up.

Before the blogosphere convicts Ashley Biden, the VP's daughter, of a cocaine felony, let us pause for a moment to consider the many equivocations in the New York Post story that launched this claim.

For starters, the only fact being reported by the Post is that a friend of Ashley's tried to sell a videotape of the alleged crime -- and the newspaper declined to pay after reviewing 90 seconds of a 43 minute tape.

The newspaper's editors act as though they took the high ground by stating "the Post refused to pay for the video." But then they go on to speculate in print about what's on it -- despite being unable to confirm that Ashley is on the tape.

If the newspaper was interested enough to watch a short clip, what was it about the tape that caused the Post to back off from obtaining it and including it with the article?...read on

They should at least confirm what they are reporting about. Shame on them even if it turns out to be true.

I was wondering when the MSM would start handing out the opium for the masses.

"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."

...of the GOP. Nothing to do with any of the real problems that plague the Nation. True or not, this means nothing...except that it is only the begining of GOP shit slinging.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

Then what was all the bullshit that was flung about Bush's daughters and McCain's daughter? They were all ASSUMED guilty on any and everything posted. I see no difference whatsoever.

Tyler Durden's picture

Yeah, I can remember all those times the NY Post smeared the Bush clan... oh, wait. No I can't.

I don't recall anything about McCain's daughter and nothing about Bush's daughter that didn't have a police report up on The Smoking Gun.

If it does turn out to be true, do you think Biden will advocate SWAT teaming her house or maybe confiscating her car as he does for us "little people"? Maybe a mandatory minimum sentence for the drug warriors daughter?

Centrocitta's picture

I seem to recall, on the campaign trail, that Joe Biden really knew how to put Rudy Giuliani in his place. So this little bit of "payback" makes perfect sense to me.

LOL

Of course, for most of their young adult years the Bush twins were on the "A" list of every frat house in America.

But, of course...on the mind of the media...not so much.

If they had watched the entire film and found it to be bogus, there would be no basis for a story. So they try to take both sides by bragging they didn't pay for the video, yet now they can speculate on what might be on it. They can do a story about something because it might be true rather than provide evidence that it is. That's how you sling mud without getting your hands dirty.

I think had they been sure of seeing her on the film, they would have bought it in a heart beat.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

I went to school with Ashley at Tulane -- she was arrested for pot possession freshman year (hard to do in NOLA), and was one of the biggest cokeheads on campus. This is wholly unsurprising to anyone that was at Tulane from 1999-2003.

Frankly, we alumni were all shocked this didn't come out in the campaign. Nice girl, but she's got a penchant for reckless behavior ... and that's not limited to drugs.

miss_kitty's picture

and drop a post filled with unsubstantiated bullshit on Ms Biden.
Finding a lot of this shit popping up on teh internets today. Yes arrested for pot, not convicted. your claims of being one of the biggest cokeheads on campus? Do you know what coke does to ones looks, not to mention septum? If she was one of the biggest users on Tulane's campus, must've been a couple of dime bags running through there -- every week.

Sorry, just the first thing I've felt the need to comment on.

Tulane's actually a big coke school, oddly enough. There's a pretty substantial (20-30% of the school)crowd that's from the northeast, and in those circles it is/was pretty popular.

I don't pretend to be up to date on the effects of coke. I stand by my statement, however, that as absolute fact, Ashley Biden was a cokehead during college.

Centrocitta's picture

Like I said, academic standards are high in the North East. I doubt there is even a one percent student population from Louisiana or Texas at Delaware or Penn. If you can't compete, you don't get in! Simple as that.

Definitely true -- that's also why there aren't at ton of Louisianans at Tulane :)

Tulane was a top-25 ranked school when I was there. Administrative troubles and Katrina have hurt us a bit, but it's an excellent academic institution ... and as for a football school? We wish.

Tyler Durden's picture

Maybe a couple of programs at best...

So what is it, a top-25 school or a drug school?

We were at #23 in USA Today my fresh/soph year. Dropped due to fundraising issues, then Katrina.

I don't know that there's anything mutually exclusive about being a party school and a serious academic institution -- Emory, Vandy, Michigan, just off the top of my head.

Centrocitta's picture

....another one of those football schools like UT Austin? I would imagine Ashley's entire Tulane class got arrested for one thing or another considering the type of place it is. Well, sometimes smart, young people go through stages of rebelling. But she should have gone to school in her home state, Delaware, where the academic standards are much higher. I'm sure her father realizes this now, as well.

Haha, not so much -- great school.

As for getting arrested in New Orleans, we used to joke that the only way to get cuffed was to pee on a police horse.

)O(

Almost everything you're saying sounds like rumor-mongering from jealous sorts in the school.

Like all the pretty cheerleaders are putting out; jocks are stupid; the rodeo club is gay...

Okay...the last one's true.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

Nope -- Ashley and I were acquaintances rather than friends, but Tulane's a small school, where pretty much every circle overlaps. A number of my good friends are former boyfriends, hookups, drinking buddies, etc of hers.

And I'm not sure what stereotype/rumors hold for daughters of successful NE politicians, but I'd guess Ashley doesn't fit many of them -- don't let the social work degree fool you. She sort of did the hippie thing for a while (don't know if that's still the case), making her own clothes. Overall a little out there, but basically a nice girl.

Again, facts is facts.

miss_kitty's picture

As you present them. We have no way of knowing who you are. A lot of people spoof on the internet.

the best example of this...

Fair enough -- always the problem with the internets, right? :)

miss_kitty's picture

The only thing that could bring this discussion to any reasonable conclusion would be a film like the one The New York Post and the Daily News refused, and neither are known for having any particular standards.

When I clicked on that link to the New York Post and Daily, it sent my computer into a tail spin and the only way I could get out of it was to re-start my computer. What a mess!

I just want to say I like Craig Crawford. I wish Keith Olbermann would have him on more often.
Now, according to Crawford's story the girl/woman in the tape could have been anybody. Could it have been Laura Bush? Barbara Bush Jr.? Oh my God, could it have been ......... Sarah Palin?

Limp-Dick Blimpaugh's picture

That's why the Reslug papers are quickly dying. I still bet it was actually somebody related to Palin.

I guess this underscores Senator Webb's proposal to re-evaluate the drug laws in this country. Was really suprised when Obama laughed about the pot question at the Town Hall meeting though. I watched that Youtube video in which he talks about re-evaluating prohibition, sure changed his tune quickly...sad.

Wasnt there quite a bit of talk around here about the bush twins when they were getting in trouble? I seem to recall a few topics about it...correct me if Im wrong.

Barbara, the uglier twin supposedly was having sex with her secret service agent when her purse was stolen.

Strangely enough, the publisher of a tabloid that ran unflattering pics of the twins was one of the anthrax victims.

Hmmmmm ......

I mean, really? It's the same to comment on verified arrests and published photos as it is to run a story that says in effect "we didn't watch the tape, don't know what or who is on it, but it MIGHT BE THIS"?

cund_gulag's picture

John,
I love ya, but this is the NY Post we're talking about. It's so bad, that they've even managed to politicize and fuck up the freaking SPORT'S pages. When even the sports pages suck, there's no earthly reason for a "newspaper" to exist. And, if it weren't for Rupe's money, it would have folded a decade ago.

families were off limits?

Palin the abstinence crusader has a teen daughter who gets pregnant and that is supposedly not newsworthy according to the right. Yet the 27 year old daughter of Biden, an anti-drug crusader, is fair game?

Anyone smell a rat here? It just seems too perfect a coincidence.

Jackie's picture

For 8 years the Media kept the news off the print about Geroge W. Bush's drug use. As Bush had an overdose at one of the Football parties at the White House and the truth was leaked the White House quickly said it was a pretzel. Pretzel is the code word for cocaine among the rich.

Now I notice the New York Post forgot to speak on Bristol Palin's two kids no Father story. Bristol might be working on having her third child as her welfare check will increase. Like Mother like Daughter.

"We didn't elect Joe Biden's daughter into office."

She's 100% correct. The trouble Ashley Biden got into is none of our business. Neither was the Bush Twins' trouble, but then, some people who could see the parallel between them and their Dad, our ex-Frat Boy in Chief, found it interesting...

Francis Crick:

Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago.

"The abrasive and unorthodox Crick and his brilliant American co-researcher James Watson famously celebrated their eureka moment in March 1953 by running from the now legendary Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to the nearby Eagle pub, where they announced over pints of bitter that they had discovered the secret of life."

And on a side note...

"Sir Alec John Jeffreys, FRS (born 9 January 1950 at Oxford in Oxfordshire) is a British geneticist, who developed techniques for DNA fingerprinting and DNA profiling which are now used all over the world in forensic science to assist police detective work, and also to resolve paternity and immigration disputes."

A particularly famous case in which the use of DNA fingerprint evidence was questioned by the court was that of O.J. Simpson 1994-1995, who allegedly murdered his ex-Wife and her friend. Because of the discrepancies over the collection methods of the DNA evidence presented in his case, Simpson was not charged with murder.

and I gare-ron-tee you will find enough coke residue to give a horse a heart attack. I've never dabbled in Charlie, but I can safely say as a media person, the coke flows freely. This is laughable, as was Kate Moss' "fall from grace" when she was caught snorting coke.
Why not make cocaine legal again? It used to be in everything, didn't it? I'm sure my grandmother told me it was one of the ingredients in BC Headache Powders.
