The USA hockey team upsets Canada 5-3!
USA started off with a goal within the first minute of the game, overcame being outplayed badly for most of the first period and then took it to the all world Canadian hockey team with a dynamite effort.
It's not the medal round, but we get a bye now as the country of Canada tries to figure out what just happened. Ryan Miller was outstanding in goal stopping almost everything they threw at him and the young US team. Brian Rafalski scored 2 goals and an awesome open net goal by a diving Ryan Kesler sealed the win.
Now they get a few days off and much needed practice time to get ready for the next round.

Give it up for the Michigan guys!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
And a shameless plug for Michigan State University as Miller's alma mater! That dude was great to watch at the collegiate level. And in the pro's, well, playing for Buffalo, he gets to use a lot of his skills.
was fantastic tonite. Martin Brodeur was very shaky for Canada. Might be time to put Luongo back in.
Agreed.
Congratulations, USA!
Ha! Team sports are lame. Far better to hop on a bicycle, hike, swim, climb, do something as an individual so that one's competing one-on-one against others and not dragging around the sweaty primate baggage of "our group against theirs" which forms the core of humanity's woes.
The fascist State suppresses individuality, imposes conformity, applauds the denial of thought, freedom, and insanity through pushing religious occultism upon people. Team sports is just another avenue, another outlet for division along racial, ethnic, and geographical lines.
Fuck that. Athletic competition is best when it's one man, one woman striving and sacrificing, working hard to be the best in his or her chosen excellence. Jingoistic, patriotic, religious, political "ritual mounting by group" expressed in team sports is for [Deleted-Sitemonitor] .
I repeat...Yawn!
Boring rant and homophobic. Smoke some weed dude and chill out. :-)
It's just a Goddamned game! You now need to STFU!
My Grandfather once told me that racists who used the n-word every time they blinked would smile when the great heavyweight boxer Joe Louis' name was mentioned. Sports can have a positive effect socially at times.
You really need to relax.
But I do recognise that sports brings people together, and allows them to create meaningful memories, either during the play, or the watching of the sports.
And JMHO, but it's pretty much bad manners to come to a sports thread and piss all over the people who find pleasure in the game. It reminds me of right wing trollage, you know, when they hit a thread and start playing the 'shame on you libs' bullshit.
me-oww!
of Ayn Rand-ish philosophy in political threads. Who needs it on a sports thread? It's just a game, for heaven's sake! Team sports promote team building in other areas of life. And it was nice to see the US team win. Congrats, US Olympics men's hockey team! Wish all the local (US and Canadian, men's and women's) games were televised in full. And can't you express yourself without using profanity and offensive language?
Did anyone notice that every one of those activities the ignorant troll mentioned are usually team based events, even if the focus is on an individual?
In addition to editing out what was obviously racist language, I would suggest someone with moderation rights rename the post "Troll Shrugged."

It's just a hockey game dude. Personally, I love team sports. Does that make me a fascist?
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
All true but congradulations USA. You were magnificent.
Well done Team USA.
You guys had the better game. I guess we're going to have to do things the hard way now if we want to make the medal round
We haven't beaten you guys in Olympic hockey since 1960! Team Canada is still a power house team to be feared. You guys played your hearts out and have nothing to be ashamed of. I have no doubt we;ll see Team Canada in the finals and I look forward to it. Then again, I'm also a big fan of Team Sweden too, so you can guess where I want the medals to go. It was a great game, and you guys should be proud. Besides, it's not over yet, and Olympic Silver is still in reach! :-D
(Now, secretly, I wouldn't be upset if Canada took the gold at home. That would be a beautiful sight.)

Many Americans have a soft spot in our hearts for Canada and Canadian players. I'd love to see gold and silver go to the US and Canada -- in whichever order the universe deems appropriate.
You know, we ought to love our Canadian cousins when it comes to hockey. So many of the NHL's best players come from Canada! Gretzky and Lemieux come right to mind. However, you just have to love the way Ovechkin has been playing this tournament. It's just been one damn fine year for Olympic hockey. The Slovakian upset over Russia was AMAZING!

...hope that the Hockey gold stays in N. America where it belongs.

Never mind.

The best team to play in front of thousands of fans disguised as empty seats.

Couldn't care any less. Maybe I'll watch again if they ever let women compete, rather than protecting us from those dangerous ski jumps.

...in the Olympics, don't you?
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
No! I said "ski jumps", which, unless I'm gravely mistaken, is not even related to Hockey. The Olympics, however, rely on revenue and I refuse to give them revenue if they don't treat women equally.

...both Summer and Winter.
In Michigan there's no high school girls' wrestling or boys' volleyball. Does that mean I should just tell my cousins to piss off when they invite me to their kids' hockey or basketball games?

I mean, it's English and everything...

Margaret-
The Olympic Games have criteria for approving sports: sports must have wide global participation, a sport must have a world championship and annual circuit of events (amongst other things).
Recently, baseball and softball were eliminated because they do not have wide enough participation (despite being played extensively in North America, Latin America, the Carribean and Asia).
The games are planned years in advance and at the time the events of Vancouver were being discussed, women's ski-jumping did not even have a world championship event.
Have you been boycotting the games prior to now due to the lack of Men's Rhytmic Gymnastics and Synchronized Swimming?
badmitton?
please
the ioc dumped baseball because the mlb refused to allow their players into the games...the milb players werent enough
and they dumped softball because the world wasnt catching up fast enough to the americans...even though japan upset our team
its all about politics and money and has very little to do with participation
it took 40 years for the world to catch up to america in basketball....they wont allow that to happen anymore
which is sad...because next to soccer, baseball has become a world wide sport...except in europe...cuz they are too stupid to understand the game
Not only is baseball not played much in Europe, there is little-to-no participation in Africa or the vast majority of Asia west of the Pacific Rim countries.
Basketball has gotten very large over the last four decades, but it will never, ever catch soccer. Even though it's relatively cheap to play, it still requires a hard surface and a ball that can be bounced. Doesn't seem like much to you and I, but to a kid in the favelas of Sao Paolo or Lagos it's a fortune. It's much cheaper and easier to use an orange as a ball and rocks for a goal mouth- that's how Pele grew up playing.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
and if it werent for the players from those regions, the mlb would stink
we need to bring baseball to africa...for it is the best game in the universe
Bats, balls and gloves ain't cheap.
Now it's not as expensive as hockey, but none of the Winter Olympics' sports are cheap. They all involve expensive equipment to play, and the costs for training (like ice time for skating sports or time on ski slopes) aren't just expensive for third worlders, but for middle class Americans, too.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
...and rather boring. soccer, basketball, track and field are worldwide sports because they are simple, cheap to organize, and can be played in summer or winter. Baseball is only really played in North and Central America, the Caribbean and the far east islands.
But that's a pretty parochial past time, too. Cricket's never been an Olympic sport, iirc, though it's huge throughout most of the former British Empire.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Walt's not correct equating baseball to soccer. The only reason baseball reached the Olympics in the first place was because of massive USA influence. And MLB players would have never been caught dead slumming with poor broke amateurs at the Olympics.

but this is a thread about hockey, and unless I'm gravely mistaken, is not even related to ski jumping.

Cammie Granato played in an Old Timer's Game with the men several years ago.
My son's HS Varsity team has a girl on it.
She's a second line player, as a soph, and will be a first line player next year. There's a lot of piss offed JV males sitting in the stands, but ya know what. Tough. Get better.
If you can play...that's all that counts.

I wish we could see more hockey like that. Miller was fantastic in goal. I wouldn't bet against Russia for the gold, Ovechkin and Malkin were great against the Czechs.
What a great game! It wouldn't have mattered who had won in the end, it would have been great hockey either way. Ryan Miller just might be my new hockey boyfriend. And Jamie Langenbrunner was as fun to watch as ever. I hope they can keep up the momentum.
Miller stood on his head and played a great game. Brodeur didnt look too great. As a Canadian , its hard to accept that Canada cant dominate with our pros playing, as we once did. It just shows that the rest of the world is catching up with the old guards of hockey like Russia and Canada. Some of the East Europeon teams are getting very competitive after years of being doormats.Kudos to Team USA for a good game. Would rather be in their shoes . Team Canada has to play Germany and Russia to get to the semis now. Tough one eh ?
Team Canada now has a rough route to any medal. They will face Russia in the Quarterfinals if they dispatch Germany as expected. One of those two teams (Russia or Canada) will not be medaling.
The Americans showed a lot of heart, taking the crowd out of it early and then turning around Canada's momentum and holding them without a shot for about eight minutes late in the second period. A lunchpail group who never stop working. Loved seeing all my LA Kings guys (Jack Johnson, Dustin Brown of the US and Drew Doughty of Canada) playing so well.
Huge Kings fan here, too. Great to see those guys perform so well. I think this is shaping up to be a great year for Kings fans!
But... but... but... What about my Ducks? :-)
Democracy is the road to socialism. ~ Karl Marx
and as much as canada says that they need this gold, i think this year, america needs it more
although it isnt the same as when we beat the evil russians at lake placid
It was different not seeing pads and a goalie stick as big as the goalie. They should have gone back to the Jim Craig "Jason" mask too. Kicking it old school
...he uses big words like 'particularly' and 'delicatessen.' -- Jack
We let you win, eh. Because we feel like beating the snot out of another European team as warmup
Canada had double the shots on goal . US goalie Miller was really " On " .
What a stud!
Miller was hot and I think that made all the difference.
Good show!
I watched the game and already posted on my blog. Can't help it if I am the sports pig in this group!

and I may simply have missed it, but I didn't hear any fat lady singing. Just sayin'.
Wow, that game really hurt as a big Canadian fan. Sometimes, no matter how much you will something, it's not going to happen.
Ryan Miller played brilliant, the American players in front of him did the best they could to contain Canada and in the end, they were able to capitalize when they got their chances. I realize it's been a very long time since the US beat Canada in Olympic hockey so I tip my hat off to them and congratulate them.
I'm sure Americans get like this in other sports but Canadians have been very arrogant about their chances at these Olympic games for hockey and this kind of wake-up call is exactly what a team full of big egos needed.
I also would like to wish the Americans the best of luck in their upcoming games because if the hockey gods are friendly, it would only be fitting that Canada get a second crack at the US in the finals.
As for the ski jump complaints, that was SOOO last week and SOOO in another thread.
Look at it this way, now you get a chance to take Russia out of medal contention due to their loss to Slovakia. Besides, Canada has nothing to nothing to be ashamed of from that game. It was a well played game and everyone should be proud. I'm pulling for the final three to be USA, Canada, and Sweden. I'd be okay with Canada winning gold this time. After all, what a victory it would be to win Gold when you are hosting the Olympics.
That being said, look at how your women have been playing! Those gals are sticking it to everyone and everything that gets in their way.
Democracy is the road to socialism. ~ Karl Marx
Anyone who follows hockey knows that the US victory could hardly be considered an 'upset'. Sure, the Canucks are good but so are the 'mericans. There are no gurantees in the olympic hockey tourney - and any game between any of the 6 big teams can go anyway - that's why they play.
