john stossel demotivational poster_7dc3f.jpg

Here we go again. ABC's resident Glenn Beck wannabe, John Stossel, whines in a recent blog entry that all critics of President Obama are labeled racists by his supporters. To prove his point, he cites an article by a right wing pundit who has been consistently wrong about issues of race -- Jonah Goldberg.

During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama’s supporters promised that his election would allow America to “transcend race."

But of course that hasn’t happened. Jonah Goldberg writes:

It was Obama’s supporters who hinted, teased, promised, and prophesied that Obama would help America “transcend race.” But now, it is they who shrink from their own promised land…

From Day 1, Obama’s supporters have tirelessly cultivated the idea that anything inconvenient for the first black president just might be terribly, terribly racist.

Without one shred of evidence to back up his assertions, Stossel ends his screed with this:

Come on. Every president eventually is criticized by the media – even one as “transcendent” as Obama. The President’s supporters should engage his critics with facts, not charges of racism. Read on...

Facts? If Mr. Stossel wants facts, he sure picked the wrong person to quote on his blog. The fact is, that racism is driving the heavy resurgence of right wing militias in this country. It is a fact that threats against our newest president have skyrocketed, and his race plays a huge role. The Minuteman movement is based on extreme racism and xenophobia, and all of this is being perpetuated daily by Republican politicians, Fox News and the titular head of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh, who gleefully aired a parody about President Obama called "Barack the Magic Negro."

I'm not trying to say that all critics of President Obama are racists, but there's no denying the fact that racism permeates much of the Republican Party, it's punditry and media. Oh and there's this, this, this and this -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Hey Stossel, if you're going to make these broad allegations, you need to come to the table with more than just quotes from Doughy Pantload wetting himself over Janeane Garofalo.

Alternative to what?
The concept of freedom of the press is that the people can publish and disseminate anything about their government without fear of punishment. ABC (Disney) is part of the governing body (unelected, for sure), by their actions. C&L IS the media, representing the voice of the people.

mrspeel's picture

I hate to admit it, but in one regard John Stossel is right. We HAVE NOT transcended race with the election of President Obama. In fact, his election has awakened the sleeping beast once again and I fear we may be headed back to the turbulent and disgusting 60s.

Case in point: I read in today's Bangor Daily News that "The John Birch Society" is beginning to rear its' ugly head once again. They plan to have a "Brief History of The John Birch Society" hosted by Harold Shurtleff. He will also discuss "issues of concern" including "Obamacare", the proposed Constitutional Convention, the Article 10 resolutions and the bailout, Thursday in Bangor ME and Saturday in Presque Isle.

I dread what lies ahead of us.

When I and I think most on the left used the term "transcend race" we were referring to the fact that a huge number of white and non-white people would vote for and support Obama. Never in memory did I or any other progressive with more than two brain cells to rub together in any way mean that once Obama was elected all of the country's racism was going to somehow magically dissolve away. What I am sick of it the equivalency. The right has wrong about everything, to be kind I will say at least 85% of the time, for the past 50+ years of my life. The MSM go to great lengths to prop up the right and do what ever they can to minimuise the left. It has taken a huge amount of effort and money to keep the country stupid.

mrspeel's picture

MSM IS propping up the right, and eroding any productive discussion we might have about where our country is headed. They no longer care about informing the public on the issues, they simply want to make money. I hope they're proud of themselves for helping the liars get their messages across just for the sake of attracting more advertisers.

I certainly didn't think racism would "dissolve away" either. In fact, I thought that there would be SOME reawakening of racism, particularly in the South, but I never dreamed it would get to such a high point, in so many areas, so quickly. I had hopes we might be able to have sane & constructive debates about the direction of our country, but I was wrong and I'm very disappointed. Today, I read that The John Birch Society is holding two meetings here in Maine this week and it just makes me sick to think people are actually going to believe their lies.

Jonah Goldberg wrong about just race? When does Jonah Goldberg say anything right about anything?

Seriously, the only thing that keeps Goldberg from stealing William Kristol's crown as the most often-wrong right-wing pundit is that Goldberg spends too much time pulling stupidity out of his imagination. At least Kristol confines most of his poor predictions to the real world.

I mentioned this on the thread from last night about doughy pantload.

He kvetches that the "liberals" won't recognize his Jewishness, and he often accuses his critics of being anti-Semitic in their remarks toward him.

But it's the Jews who don't recognize Goldberg's Judaism. To be born Jewish ideally both parents are, but it comes through the mother's line. In the case of a mixed religion marriage, one is born Jewish only if the mother is. Otherwise you have to convert, and neither the Conservatives, nor the Orthodox make it easy for you. The former might not be quite as severe as the latter though.

And lucianne goldberg is not Jewish.

Wasn't it the right that was claiming racism was over after Obama got elected? Seems like there was a C&L post about that very thing, too lazy to dig through the archive though.

This seems to be more rightwing/libertard projection. Much like they were so adamant that Obama was "the messiah" (and claimed that's what libruls thought of him), now they're on about how libruls are the real racists (electing an AA, notwithstanding).
