Like getting tomorrows news today :o

health insurance they still can't afford, even with government subsidies going to change the fact they still can't afford insurance or skyrocketing medical treatment costs?

Get real the bills a total farce. Cash Confiscation, Legalized Extortion.

care bill is "socialism." More like socialism for the insurance companies. No you idiot, all the good socialist parts have either been removed or weren't considered up for discussion to begin with!

i would call it a fascist bill (although i cringe to use the word). because in the true sense of fascism it uses the government to enforce laws for the benefit of corporations over the people. forcing everyone to buy for profit health insurance when a socialist system just makes good economic sense. why waste all of that money on a middle man...especially when we don't have it. ugh it makes me sick

camalia's picture

You're right; according to wikipedia "fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems, including the political system and the economy." In addition "socialist" systems like firefighter dep. and police dep. seem to work acceptable: everybody pays for the benefits of those in need because virtually everybody will eventually need one of these "social" services.

Yep

The Democrats are dumb enough to think that their political future depends on passing a piece of legislation the vast majority of the American people are now against.

Know Knothing Knation will always be against it, no matter what it says.

Republicans will always be against it because it was introduced by the Democrats.

Independents are leery of it for many reasons.

And now, the progressive base feels betrayed, many thinking that this bill is worse than doing nothing.

And, the Democrats are stupid enough to write the bill so that whatever benefits might come of this legislation will not go into effect for many years.

It all spells electoral disaster for the Democrats next year.

Fuck 'em. They deserve the defeat, and we're not getting anything for their tenure anyway.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

Edwin's picture

It would depend which country you went to and what their system is-- and what their medical costs are there. You'd have to research by country.

If you're legal in Canada, you're laughing. Europe is OK too.

In Korea, when I work I pay into their system and it covers about 80% (?), you pay the rest. Right now I'm not working so I guess I'm not covered. However, going to the doctor is often not expensive.

I rarely get sick-- almost never. Good genes? I eat very healthy too. If I were dying I'd be getting on a plane to Canada.

I know lots of Europeans get dental work in Thailand, and then have a beach holiday. The savings pay for the vacation.

Need to research, by country. I think you pay A LOT in the USA!!!!!

edit: for any facing a major medical procedure, w/o insurance, I'd be shopping around in other countries for much cheaper medical costs!!

far left loon >.<

fiver's picture

... how much of the Korean system do we pay for when it's all sorted out? or the Israeli system? or the European system for that matter?

I know that the money or troops aren't a direct subsidy, but I'm thinking that if some other country picked up a portion of our defense expenditures we might have a few extra nickels lying around.

I was also thinking that perhaps Korea, Germany, Japan, and the hundred or so other countries we occupy could at least send thank you flowers... unless, of course, they'd rather not be occupied.

never mind.... sometimes I think too much.

The American Empire may be the only empire in history that didn't exact monetary tribute from her vassal states, instead giving monetary grants to those states (with strings attached, of course!) to maintain their fealty.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

The American taxpayer supplies the vassals "benefits" through the front door while multi-national corporations steal those benefits (and then some) out the back.

Different method; same result.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

Edwin's picture

You got that right fiver. It's economic imperialism.

In Korea's case, the US wants bases here because it is MAINLAND East Asia (Japan is an island):logistics of troops amd equipment movement, etc.. Korea borders Russia and China. N Korea is a pawn of all sides: no-man's land, a buffer state, if you follow my thinking. Korea is a toehold on the continent.

far left loon >.<

MountainMan23's picture

American "food aid" to Country X is a bundle of cash with the stipulation that Country X spend that cash on food from (you got it!) American Agriculture Inc., which already sucks in enormous taxpayer subsidies in the first place.

One result is that the highly subsidized American food undersells the local farmers in Country X, causing failure of agriculture in Country X, forcing migration from the rural areas to the overcrowded cities in Country X.

And they are now dependent on American Agriculture Inc.

YAY!!!

American generosity pays off in the end!

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Edwin's picture

Part of the Korea free-trade agreement was allowing in (cheap) American rice and beef. Koreans are proud of their rice paddies and rice-growing heritage, and fear that way of life -(very important stuff here!!)- will disappear. Rice isn't just food here, it's the essence of a culture. Koreans know it costs a little more to buy Korean, but it makes their hearts sing.

Most Asian countries, and especially Korea (Japan too), are extremely highly nationalistic.

far left loon >.<

MountainMan23's picture
.

I've seen footage of Korean farmers opposing that agreement.

I seem to recall one very famous farmer killed himself in protest .. right?

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Edwin's picture

You don't pay for any of the Korean system, just for your own bases. The Koreans pick up a hefty tab to have the bases here too!!! The powers that be always play the N Korea scare card, along with the Japanese hawks.

Korean conservatives (hawks) want to keep them and Korean progressives want them gone (pretty much). Same shit different country. Same in Japan too.

I think there are far too many misconceptions in America about your role in the greater world. Korea is NOT POOR at all, not any longer. I believe they're lending money to America to finance your debt now, just like China and Japan do.

far left loon >.<

fiver's picture
~

Can you elaborate on the divide? Is there a consensus that North Korea is a threat? Or is the divide more as to whether US troops are needed to meet this threat?

As to the debt: I'd still like to know why it's always scary foreigners holding our debt. I get that China and Korea, and wealthy entities everywhere are heavily invested in Treasury securities.

But so is Goldman Sachs.

Of course, when the main creditor is China with its billion people and its nukes, it seems so intractable. When it's Goldman Sachs it could be easily addressed with one tax bill.

I've looked for an authoritative breakdown with no luck.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

Edwin's picture

See, the history is very complex (just like in the Middle East). I get it because I live here, but there isn't space enough here.

Korean hawks are descendants of the military dictatorships (imo), and still the rulers. The Miracle of the Han River came from the dictatorships' intervention in the economy by propping up elite individuals, also highly (truly bizarro) Xian because of US missionaries after the war, and now they run Samsung, LG, Hyundai etc. So these elites are (mostly) bizarro (phony) Xian, conservative and pro-USA.

Then we mix in the Buddhists and the Atheists, and the "common man", and most of the public yawns about N Korea, but they still have a National (anti-commie) Security Law, and they can arrest people that don't toe the gov't line. They've been brainwashed all their lives about the commie scare, but they also feel these are our brothers and sisters and cousins, and they want to embrace them. So, it's really weird. On top of this, you have to remember, they are highly Confucian and must demure to every and all authority....

See, I could write a book. This just doesn't even begin to explain.

Let's just say, the affairs in every country are damned complicated and anyone trying to sum it up as us and them, or good guys and bad guys--- well, it just don't work!!!!

Personally, I one that yawns at the N Korean scares in the media, and most people around seem to yawn also.

The MSM here is totally fucked, basically. It's a democracy, yet most people don't trust the government at all-- not one bit. It's really weird, but I get it. If you lived here you would too.

far left loon >.<

fiver's picture

Thanks, Edwin. I get it a little bit better now. Or, more importantly, I get that I don't really get it.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

Edwin's picture

That wasn't anywhere near the tip of the iceberg even. I didn't even get to around 95% of it.

Koreans are nice people, still trying to overcome a lot of bad history, with some bad players, and foreign intervention. They have never invaded anyone. They just want to be left alone???

Karen's picture

In an earlier thread, I posted a Karencatures encapsulation of the health care "negotiations." At the end of that post, I wrote, "to be continued."

I'm continuing it here:

Progresso-crats: Okay, look. We're not voting for this. We'll do whatever we have to, and if that means killing this so called 5% victory, so be it.

Democrats: God damn it, okay. Let's gather the Progresso-crats and a few Conservo-crats together to see if we can figure something out we can all agree on.

Progresso-crats: Say, if we try Y, we can actually get back up to 15% of X, which is what the Republicans said they'd go for in the first place. It's different from what we wanted, but hell, at this point, we'll go for that.

Democrats: Well, Conservs, whaddaya think?

Conservo-crats: That's an interesting idea, but here's what we will go for: First, take out Y. Next, let's do that mandate thing Republicans like, where the people themselves are forced to cover the cost of however much X we get. And finally, spit the Progresso-crats' faces, and give them only a few little crumbs they can spin into a victory if they're smart politically. Sound good?

Democrats: Well . . . . .

President: Sounds good to me.

Democrats: Oh, well, then yep, sounds good! Thank you for compromising for the good of the American people.

Progresso-crats: WHAT?!?!?! They didn't compromise!! They gave us crumbs in exchange for forcing people who already can't afford X to buy it themselves!

President: My fellow Americans, the Progresso-crats are irrelevant, irrational, kooky fringe people who are just throwing a tantrum. You know what's guaranteed? Do what Progresso-crats want, and your premiums will go up. That's guaranteed.

Pro-progresso-crats: Well, we'll keep fighting for more, but you know, there actually are a lot of good crumbs in the 5% we're buying. It'd be a shame to lose those crumbs altogether. We'd be cutting off our noses to spite our faces. We should at least buy the 5% of X that we need.

Con-progresso-crats: Rubbish! This bill makes everything worse. It must be changed or stopped. Period.

. . . . and the number of Con-progresso-crats begins to dwindle . . . .

--------------------------to be continued---------------------

MountainMan23's picture

One issue hardly mentioned here at C&L is the recent serious deterioration in US relations with Latin America.

The US was the only nation - in the region or the world - that did not strongly condemn the coup in Honduras, but put on a transparent charade of trying to help restore democracy while in fact doing only enough to give an appearance of doing so.

But what's really got the Latin American nations up in arms (literally it seems) is the expansion of US access to Colombian military bases. When the document was signed it was vehemently denounced by leader after leader.

And now Hugo Chavez has accused the US of flying a spy plane over Venezuela, flown out of Colombia.

The Latin Americans had very high hopes from Obama. Those hopes have been dashed.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Kelvin Phillips's picture

Can you blame them? For decades, the U.S. government has treated Latin American nations very badly. Was it too much to ask that the U.S. treated these nations as an honest partner, and respect their sovereignty?

Edwin's picture

I'll tell you, after living abroad for so many years, and especially in a political crossroads like Korea, what we get as news of many places (from the Western/American perspective) isn't worth much. It's so twisted and distorted and watered down, it's useless.

I had a prior disagreement with someone on a different forum who said that Obama was the Dems answer to Bush: a dewey-eyed optimist who thinks so highly of himself that he can't or won't deal with the reality of the situation. I was so hoping Obama had at least more common sense or initiative, but, other than visiting more countries, he's still sitting on the sidelines, when it comes to our domestic economic security. Christ, if this is really the best President in a "long time", as the guy who formerly ran Bushflash put it, what the hell do we have to look forward to in the future?

Is that it ends up being so beauracratic in hunting down people who "break the law" by not being insured that there's no way they can screw us over immediately, since they have to have a whole system to implement it. Unless of course Congress manipulates that law which allows the feds to spy on us just to go after "perps". But they wouldn't dare abuse the system for that. =p

We start a campaign to get all the doctors/hospitals/dentists/eye care providers etc. to simply send our bills to Medicare for reimbursement.

We should all just act as if we ARE all covered by Medicare!!!!

When Medicare tells the doctors/hospitals etc. that they are not responsible for the bills we'll go to court and challenge it with lawyers claiming we have already given PLENTY of money to the federal government and we expect our medical needs to be covered BEFORE any military expenditures are paid.

I like this idea....it's, well...revolutionary!
