Sanford-D_f3174.JPG

I think it's just automatic now. When a high-profile Republican gets into trouble, Fox News steps in to mislead their sheep viewers by labeling them as Democrats.

Here's a short list of Fox's chyron hackery:

John McCain - Democrat

Joe Lieberman - Democrat

Arlen Spector - Democrat (when he was still a Republican!)

Mark Foley - Democrat

Media Matters also caught Fox listing a Democratic strategist as Bush's head of FEMA -- because his name happened to be Michael Brown. Oh, and we can't forget the time they announced Rep. William Jefferson's indictment using footage of Congressman John Conyers. They apologized to their audience, but never to Conyers personally.

I'm sure it was just an oversight, just like all the rest...riiiight. Have I missed any?

Dave N:

It's almost a clockwork thing.

Whenever Fox News wants you to forget that someone is actually a Republican, they, ah, accidentally label them a Democrat on their chryon and let it go. So they did that today, as you can see, while Mark Sanford was explaining that he had been in Argentina to screw around on his wife. (They corrected it in later chryons.)

Hardly the first time this has happened.

Foley-BO-Dem.jpg

There was the time they ID'ed Mark Foley, in the midst of another sex scandal, as a Democrat too.

At other times with sex scandals, as with Sen. Larry Craig, they simply have forgotten to identify them as Republicans.

They've also done it when someone's Republican status is inconvenient:

specter-democrat-hume.jpg

When Arlen Specter was attacking conservative shibboleths, he got labeled a D too.

And then there was the time John McCain was labeled a Democrat too. At the time that just seemed weird, but now, with Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and a host of other conservatives promoting the notion that McCain was just a fake Republican anyway, it makes a certain kind of sense.

Fox sense, that is.

that Gov. Sanford simply thinks that throwing out a few apologies and quitting his leadership position in the Republican Party is going to make everything hunky-dory.

Ummm, shouldn't he be resigning as Governor about right now??

I mean, Spitzer has a little tumble with a hooker and is forced to resign...but this guy has as much as admitted he's practically a BIGAMIST! Maybe the next thing we'll find out is that he has a love child with his lover as well!

I have actually REMOVED Fox from my television channel list. That station has proved itself to be misleading too many times to hold the honor of having a channel spot on my television. I am surprised that the FCC allows such a 4th rate amateurish syndicate like Fox any air time at all.

Which is why they rightly earned the name Fake or Faux "news". I wonder if the FCC can do something about this deliberate misleading of their naive viewers.

I don't think the FCC can go after cable, but I just might be wrong.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Two reporters sued Fox News for a wrongful firing. They said that Fox ordered them to report a biased version of a story and they were suspended without pay for refusing. Although they won the suit originally, it was overturned on appeal.

The court said the FCC’s prohibition against news distortion is merely a policy.

So it's up to The People vs. FOX then?

Eric Idle's naughty worded song about the FCC (and Bushco).

Seattle_Truthseeker's picture

might be to call the FCC and find out if they have cognizance over transmissions that are strictly hard line.

They repeatedly, falsely, knowingly, and with malice continue to libel the Democratic party.

One lawsuit covering all the repeated instances would show a clear pattern.

Sue them for libel or stop complaining about it. Really!!!

Hybrid's picture

... that is, vigorously contact every Democratic official you can to get the lawsuit moving. These guys have been out of control for years, and it's about time we send them off on the next ice flow.

you also need a Department of Justice to prosecute

JustMyWords's picture

But the problem with the theory proposed is that it really isn't a good legal theory.

Sue someone for libel because you were labeled as a Democrat? Umm....might be good idea from a Republican point of view, not so much from the Democratic point of view.

And a Democrat can't sue for libel after a Republican is misidentified unless that Democrat could show that he/she has been personally harmed by that misidentification.

It was funny today after he made his confession, I asked in jest was fox making him a democrat yet. And sure enough, they were. One thing you will probably never see is them putting an "R" after Barack Obama's name.

there's really no use in getting upset or angry when revelations regarding Fox News are posted. AS long as they can appeal to and have their target audience in the palm of their hand, and that would be one digit IQ middle America, believing in them and doting on their every utterance, they really don't care what thinking or liberal america perceives them as being. So you have a choice, either attack from a different modality or continue getting upset and give yourself a heart attack. The choice is yours. Fox gets me sick so i would rather find a different modality.

The BEST you can say about Faux News is that they are incompetent. So incompetent that they don't the chair of the REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR'S ASSN is a Republican; so incompetent that they don't know one of the leading contenders for the REPUBLICAN NOMINATION in 2012 is a Republican. I mean, any competent news organization would have that information on hand; if not, it takes a few keystrokes to get to Wikipedia. No, nobody is THAT incompetent.

Which leaves malevolence. It has happened too many times. Mark Foley, Lamar Alexander, John McCain (the Rep. predsidential candidate), Chaffee, Ted Stevens (the longest serving member of the Senate) and now Sanford. No, somebody is telling the production staff to distance them from these disgraced Republicans. It's Orwellian, this re-writing of history.

If a manufacturer claimed that their cream could be rubbed on the skin and mounds of ugly fat would just "melt" away in weeks, the FTC and the FDA would be all over them to prove it.

Now I know that there are basic standards of journalism in the daily print newspapers. They print retractions and corrections daily. Why can't the same standards be applied to broadcast journalism across the board?

I know the first reaction is First Amendment rights. But this isn't about restricting speech as much as it is about, how shall I say this, truthing it up? The purpose would be to make "fact-based" journalism truly fact based and not masquerading opinions.

The FCC could step in to insist that any claims made on the "news" be provable or supportable based on facts. Basically: You said it, now prove it. (Same thing the FTC does with specious claims from manufacturers.) If it can't be proven or supported by facts then it MUST be labeled as "Opinion" until the facts move it out of the "this is what I think" column, if they ever do.

Just a thought.
