A new video interview with the governor, who talks at some length about media coverage during and after the campaign. The interview is by conservative broadcaster John Ziegler, who is producing a documentary, "Media Malpractice ... How Obama Got Elected." It was done at her Wasilla home on Monday, and posted clips on YouTube yesterday. A big chunk of the YouTube clip is Palin teeing off on media coverage of her family. She talks about a double standard between coverage of her family and Obama's, and suggests a double standard between scrutiny of her and Caroline Kennedy (who's pursuing a New York Senate seat) because of her social class. "When I heard Barack Obama state in one of his interviews on national television that his wife was off limits, meaning, family's off limits -- you know, 'Attack me, I'm the public official, come after me, I can handle it and we'll duke it out if need be, but family's off limits' -- I naively believed, OK, they respected that in him and his demand for that to be adhered, naively believing that must apply to all of us, right? But it didn't apply." On Kennedy: “I’ve been interested also to see how Caroline Kennedy will be handled and if she will be handled with kid gloves or if she will be under such a microscope also. It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out and I think that as we watch that we will perhaps be able to prove that there is a class issue here also that was such a factor in the scrutiny of my candidacy versus, say, the scrutiny of what her candidacy may be.”Oh yeah, the media has been so kind to Caroline Kennedy. I forget, who dragged their family all over the country to stand as a prop during speeches? Who was billing the government for travel expenses for their family?
Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if either of Obama's daughters would have become pregnant, it would have been far more "newsworth" (granted, at their ages, it actually would be from a scientific standpoint, but...you know what I mean).
What made her family so newsworthy was the blatant disconnect between her rhetoric and her life.
She doesn't favor teaching kids about birth control and says it's all for the good, and ends up with a pregnant teen to worry about.
Well...obviously, not everyone has her financial resources in order to handle that situation, therefore it becomes an important caveat to mention.
All this does for me is prompt me to wonder, if she cannot handle a little pressure from the press, how the hell is she going to handle the pressures of leadership?

Actually, Judaism's "monotheism" is a product of practice, not theology. The first commandment, when translated, says "I am the Lord your God", and the second, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me" - it doesn't say "I am the only God", it says "I am your God"
Judaism, and it's latter-day ripoff, Christianity, were formed in polytheistic times and places; the idea that there was only one god simply wouldn't compute. It was only over generations that this belief system evolved into monotheism, through practice and codification of Jewish law.
Technically, the early Jews were Henotheists, believing many gods existed but only worshipping the one they had a convenant with. But their priests had a hard time preserving that discipline, until supposedly 700 BCE when the Old Testament was read publically for the first time.
The only trouble is no portions of the Bible exist from prior to 100-200 BCE.
And it was PBS who said they were monotheists without making that distinction.

I would suggest that Sarah Palin got far more gentle treatment than she deserved in the media. She was completely out of her depth and the press sort of gave her a pass. To their (limited) credit, though, the interviews with Charlie Gibson and, more so, Katie Couric, gave her sufficient rope to hang herself.
That being said, Caroline Kennedy IS getting a total pass. While I do believe she has the potential to be a great Senator, I don't think she "deserves" it, nor do I think the press has been sufficiently rigorous in vetting her. She's never run for office, let alone statewide office - there's no evidence that she could successfully defend the seat in a primary or general election. She is campaigning for exactly one vote in closed door meetings and, publicly, has been completely opaque and deflective about her policy positions. The situation doesn't technically demand her to act otherwise, but the public has a right to know. Because the democratic process is removed from this process it would behoove her and those that support her to develop a portfolio of policy positions that she could be held accountable for when she does run in the special election in 2010.
I hate to say it, but she's got a point. Until we have some baseline for accountability, Sarah Palin is correctly identifying elitism in the media.
Now that would be a great thing to extend to political parties as well. If a candidate's policy positions do not match a party's then they should be in a different party or be an independent. As it stands, there are a bunch of republicans with (D) after their names. Even a can of Chef Boyardee has a higher degree of honesty in packaging.
Accountability does not equal ideological lockstep.

No one is calling for ideological lockstep with any party (at least, I don't read that). I was merely pointing out that Kennedy should put out where she stands on the issues, as anyone campaigning for public office does, so the voters, when given the chance to vote, can evaluate her fidelity to the ideas and positions she claimed at the time of her appointment.

It's not elitism to expect a candidate for vice president to be able to speak in complete sentences or formulate an idea. Palin showed herself to be wholly unprepared at best. And if you're pushing for accountability, then Palin is responsible for her own poor performance.

First Point: It doesn't, anywhere. My point is that the economy is going to tank even further this year and pressure will be on to shift back to the right in mid-term elections. CK's lack of political infrastructure makes her a weak candidate for protecting the seat.
Second Point: Because we're Democrats, and we expect better of ourselves. The corp. media and right wing noise machine have been working in lockstep for over a generation. The reason we've been able to win out in the last two federal election cycles is not some wondrous political calculus on the left, but rather the utter failure of "conservative" and neoconservative policies. The truth laid bare is all it took. We need to stick to truth and accountability.
Third Point: Off topic. I wasn't in any way defending Palin or her coverage in the press, or her performance. I hope beyond all hope that she wins the republican nomination in 2012, cuz her defeat will be emphatic.
Fourth Point: I don't accept the liberal media bias claim. Quite the opposite. Ever since the press got wrapped up in the entertainment business (difficult to pinpoint the exact turning point, but I suspect early to mid 1980's) they've been attracted to celebrity and narrative, and turned their collective backside to facts and events. Hence, the Kennedy narrative usurps any effort to figure out what she would fight for.
1. If we're concerned with FIXING things, what does it matter if someone can hold onto the seat or not? The point is doing your job, not keeping your seat.
2. Why is accountability just for Democrats? For that matter, what gives you the right to say Caroline Kennedy isn't/can't/won't be accountable?
3. Sorry, you can't say Palin's charge of media elitism is valid, then discount it when I counter your argument.
4. Try a show called "Inside Edition." You might have heard of it, it was hosted by a foul-mouthed pervert named Bill O'Reilly. But seriously, whether you're whining about 'liberal bias' or 'mainstream media,' you're missing the point. It's not just accountability and facts, it's a far more subtle exercise in bullying reporters into accepting one narrative, and complaining when they don't.
1) The point is keeping your seat to continue to fight for what you believe is in the best interest of your constituents. Incumbency is powerful; if she loses the seat to (R) it's hard to win back.
2) It's not just for (D), but, if we can't have it from the right that doesn't preclude us from holding our own feet to the fire. And, ACCOUNTABLE TO WHAT? That's my point, if she won't say what she's going to do, how can we hold her accountable. Remember, the (R) come in and say "we're going to cut taxes, cut entitlement spending, increase military spending, reduce oversight and regulation". They have been surprisingly faithful to their beliefs.
3) Sorry, I wasn't discounting it. I was IGNORING Palin's claim that she didn't get a fair shake - cuz it's bunk. I was only suggesting that the media narrative surrounding Kennedy is trumping any attempt to figure out where she stands on the issues.

If being appointed is a problem with you then you have a big problem because whoever replaces Hilary will be "appointed". And saying "you know" a lot is not a disqualification for being a Senator. Also being a Kennedy there is a huge probability that she was raised with the underclass' welfare in at the top of her concern. And with her family's influence she is in a special position to get things doe that Joe Schmo could not. As far as having somebody with the experience you are describing getting the office I say "no thank you" because you end up with a Sara Palin type person. Having said all that I am not sure that Kennedy is the best pick but for reasons you have not mentioned.

An hour or so ago on MSNBC, David Shuster did an interview with the guy who interviewed Palin. They had an all out shouting fest. The guy is as goofy as Palin is.

When I saw this yesterday and heard all the bits and pieces it gave me hope. Hope that this will be the end of Sarah Palin. This may just be the nail in the coffin. It is especially satisfying that the asshole John Ziegler is the one putting it together in the hope of placing blame on the "librul media" for Obama's election when in reality it reinforces the claim that Palin was a huge reason for the McCain failure.
