Bart Stupak to Get Democratic Primary Challenge

Oh boy, am I happy to hear this: A pro-choice, pro-healthcare reform woman running against Bart Stupak. Can't wait until she gets her fundraising page up:

WASHINGTON – Michigan’s Bart Stupak, a Democratic congressman who could help bring down health care reform over an abortion provision, is getting a primary challenge this year.

connie_saltonstall_843ab.jpg

Connie Saltonstall of Charlevoix said today she plans to run against Stupak for the Democratic nomination of Michigan’s First Congressional District, citing Stupak’s efforts to stop health care reform if it doesn’t ban use of government money for abortions. Stupak, a former state trooper from Menominee, has held the seat since 1993.

This year and last, Stupak has made a name for himself as a thorn in the side of some congressional Democrats pushing legislation for health care reform. While largely supportive of those efforts, he successfully attached an amendment last fall to ban use of federal funds to help pay for abortions.

“I believe that he has a right to his personal, religious views, but to deprive his constituents of needed health care reform because of those views is reprehensible,” said Saltonstall in a statement.

I'm not sure how he swings... but he is Roman Catholic. I guess it depends on his stance? ;)

challenger--what he is or isn't does not help us remove him...Remember that money talks --If Saltonstall is qualified and for your positions--lets get behind her--The halls get very chilly on the hill when you have a viable primary challenger..

This is good news. Stupak is clearly in office to advance his own personal agendas, and that has nothing to do with serving the country or his constituents. Time for that douchebag to dust off his plans for what he planned to do when his life of public "service" was over.

I'd vote for her over Mr Should-Have-Been-Aborted, were I unlucky enough to be paying Stoopak with my tax dollars.

Shouldn't we ask her about what she does to celebrate her birthday before we get too excited? Once Massa-ed, twice shy.

Desperation!

I just swiped this quote from Kos

"All 41 Republican Senators vowed in a letter today to do everything in their power to kill Democrats' health care legislation and vote en bloc against procedural motions Democrats want to use to fix the health reform bill passed Christmas Eve by the Senate.

This would include a scenario where the Republican Senators oppose language championed by anti-abortion rights Democrats in the House and side instead with abortion rights defenders. [...]

“So you’d be voting with Barbara Boxer on an abortion measure?” a reporter asked Sen. Tom Coburn, the OB-GYN and Oklahoma Republican who vehemently opposes abortion rights, at a press conference this afternoon. Boxer, a California Democrat, is a vehement supporter of abortion rights.

“Yes I would. I certainly would,” Coburn said, clarifying that he would oppose a procedural motion in the Senate to allow the stricter ban on federal funding for abortion from being added to the Senate health reform bill."

Stupak will be getting a campaign visit from Obama, and he can also count on support from Bill Clinton and the DNCC.

Of course it's not like it would make much of a difference if Saltonstall defeated him. Her emphasis on abortion rights is likely just code for *I support the establishment, but I have to run on something in order to delude progressives.*

sick people hater Stupak needs to be thrown out of Congress onto his self-interested ass.

Warning: Not suitable for devout Catholics! My letter to Rep. Michael Michaud, D-Maine follows:

Dear Rep. Michaud:

This letter concerns health care reform legislation.

First, I ask that you support H.R. 4789, introduced by Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Florida, for a Public Option in the Health Care Reform bill. Actually, I don’t ask, I demand. My vote for you in the future will be determined by how you handle the crucial health care issue. I only work one weekday, so I have the time to get out there to work against your re-election if need be. And as I currently am a victim of the Anthem Health Care insurance company, I have plenty of motivation to take down anyone that keeps us enslaved in the current health insurance system.

Also, and I am not current on this, but I had read that you supported the Stupak amendment, that is in effect, an attempt to ban abortion and a woman’s choice from the health care reform. Bart Stupak has been revealed to be a member of the “C” Street cult that is currently coming under investigation for tax fraud. He is a right wing Catholic fundamentalist, as bad as the Taliban are, in my opinion.

Now, one of the basic tenants of our Constitution is the separation of church and state. The Catholic Church is the largest organized pedophile group in recorded known human history. Their influence should NOT have anything what-so-ever to do with the health care of US citizens. Currently, the Vatican is embroiled in yet ANOTHER sex scandal, regarding procurement of male prostitutes of high church officials. The Catholic church, all over the world, has been under assault for allowing the sexual abuse and in some cases, murder (ex: Shelburne Falls, Mass Catholic priest) by pedophile priests of children.

But I would object very strongly if you let your personal religious beliefs influence your support of legislation put forward by a right wing Christian cultist, Bart Stupek. Personally, I hope he is indicted for tax fraud and imprisoned. Any attempt to overturn settled law regarding a woman’s right to choose will be met with unyielding resistance. I will not accept having the criminal Catholic Church write restrictions on US citizen’s health care.

and I don't know how he'll react, as I have feeling that he is 0f French Canadian (Catholic) descent. But so am I and my lineage goes directly back to the first French settler of Quebec, Louis Hebert, who came over with Champlain.

I have many Catholic friends, and they are the nicest people. It is the church I have a problem with, they want to get between the believers and their God, and collect money in the process. And dictate morals to the rest of us while being the most evil organization. Western Taliban.

I am so fed up with all the Dems that as much as i would like to donate to his challenging opponent, I just feel she'll probably turn out to be a spineless corporate tool--like the rest of them.

and I don't know how he'll react

You'll get back a boilerplate letter outlining the Congressman's standard response on healthcare, whatever it is. I think they just figure out what the topic of the letter is an return a reply; in fact, a machine could do it: scan for a set of topics, determine the relevant ones and select the appropriate canned response. I suspect the only impact of writing these guys is that there might be a tally-board some where so they know what topics the writing public is interested in.

Debber's picture

I love your letter and agree wholeheartedly with you that is is a woman's personal choice and that's the law, if I'm not mistaken... thankfully that's the law in Canada where I'm from.

I wish you all the best in your cause and cheer you on!

OK, I know what she believes about health care reform and abortion. Those are very important, to be sure, but what about environmental causes? Employment and unions? Regulation of business in general and banks in particular?

I've been to her page, and all she has up right now is that message about Stupak and a link to donate. I need to know more.

MinuteMan's picture

It would be a good idea to make sure that she's not a raving loon as well. One time the Democratic candidate to replace Ted Stevens (fat chance) as Alaska's Senator was a well known crackpot; that's the only election I ever voted for a Green. On the other hand, it might be amusing to force Stupak to campaign against her even if she were a loon.

This might even start a new trend. Maybe the tea partiers will run Barney Frank's dining-room-table woman in the GOP primary; she might even be able to rate a visit from resigned-in-disgrace-half-term-governor Palin. In fact, this might even be a chance for the Tea Party to get organized. Like previous fringe parties they could assign ranks: entry level folks could start out as "foot stools" and advance through the furniture hierarchy culminating with the almost god-like position of Wide-Screen-TV. This begets the question of Palin's rank: I would suggest Lava Lamp

chazcee's picture

Isn't federal funding for abortions is already banned by the Hyde amendment and reflected in the Senate HCR bill?

As I understand it; what Stupak is trying to do is make it impossible for abortions to be covered by health insurance whether that isurance is paid from public funds or not. That isn't what the Stupak's language says outright but it "backdoors" a prohibition by making it difficult and expensive for Health Insurance carriers to provide abortion coverage at all.

Limp-Dick Blimpaugh's picture

Please beat the asshole Stupak and get rid of this moron for good.
