General Warns Diversity May Be Casualty of Ft. Hood Shooting
By Susie Madrak Sunday Nov 08, 2009 4:00pm
From This Week with George Stephanopoulos, an interview with Gen. George Casey in which (of course) we use the "terrorism" label, but the general also worries that speculation about the Ft. Hood shootings will fan the fires of bigotry in the military:
STEPHANOPOULOS: You say you can't talk too much about the investigation, but we are learning a fair amount about Major Hasan in the last couple of days. And it appears that there were several warning signs they either could have or should have been caught.
His fellow students and here in Bethesda, Maryland, say that he had anti-American rants at various presentations. The FBI has found some Internet postings by a man with Mr. Hasan's name, very inflammatory, praising suicide bombers.
And one of the major's fellow students has been especially concerned by what he said. He said that it was very clear to him, and his name is
Val Finnell, that -- and that he had complained to administrators at a military university about these anti-American rants. And the AP story that quotes him goes on to say that Hasan's fellow students complained to the faculty about Hasan's anti-American propaganda, but said a fear of appearing discriminatory against a Muslim student kept off the students from filing a formal complaint. Is that true?CASEY: I think we need to be very careful here about speculating based on anecdotes like that. We are encouraging all of our soldiers and leaders that may have information pertaining to the suspect to come forward with that information to the criminal investigation division and to the FBI. So, I realize there is a lot out there. We all want to know what happened and what motivated the suspect, but I think we need to be very, very careful here in these early days to let the investigation take its course. These are professionals and they will sort through this.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So it's fair to say that right now, you can't rule out anything. We don't know if this was an act of premeditated political terror, or if this was a case of someone who just snapped.
CASEY: I think you are exactly right, and I don't think we should speculate on one or the other or any other possibilities.
STEPHANOPOULOS: One of the things this does raise, though, is the special challenge paused to all of you by Muslims in the military.
There are only about 3,000 Muslims in the military right now, and on the one hand, you want to recruit Muslims. There is a great need for Muslims in the military right now. On the other hand, this is not the first case we've seen of fratricide by someone with a Muslim background in the military. How do you deal with this challenge?
CASEY: Again, I think that's something else we need to be very careful about, and I think the speculation could potentially heighten backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers. And what happened at Fort Hood was a tragedy, but I believe it would be an even greater tragedy if our diversity becomes a casualty here. And it's not just about Muslims. We have a very diverse army. We have a very diverse society.
And that gives us all strength. So again, we need to be very careful with that.

As chickenhawk Zionist Lieberman fans the flames.
Lets see just how many of these war hawks have serve time really fighting in a war zone or even served in the military..
We know Bush, Rumsfeld , Cheney , Rove , Rush , Lieberman , Ashcroft and most others have received deferments , bumps on the a.. , train other at a distance and other methods to get out of serving in the real fighting of the war.
But they certainly love to wave the flag , shout to the roof tops about patriotism and the other phony BS which comes out of their mouths to condemn democratic heroes as Kerry and others which do not dance to their tune of deceit.
I don't think you can say either it was premeditated or that he just snapped - Both, really. He came to see the situation as Americans vs. Muslims, while his mental health deteriorated.
he has those stars.
No matter what, we can not allow fear to rear its ugly head again. Only conservatives live in fear. Only cons like to spread the fear in their lives to the rest of us.
I do believe the General has an idea of what happened though. And it will not be pretty when and if it all comes out.
Don't ask don't tell?
doing his best to fan flames of hatred via speculation. If you want to see how close ABC is to LGF, go their news blog and read the comments they allow to be posted.
... 'free speech' does not mean I can't say you're full of b.s. or racist hatred, but that's what decades of Limbaugh-style false equivalency has bought us.
or more Arabic speakers? I'll wager GS meant the latter but of course he conflates the two.
You're a mind reader.
You're trying to be clever but you aren't.
I said "I'll wager..."
Ever have an opinion before?
during a labor strike, asked of local union leaders was; why did they allow picketers to use flashbulbs at night in order to blind transit drivers that had crossed picket lines to go back to work?
The leaders said "we can't always control our people, especially when they're so dedicated to the cause of labor."
From that experience I see parallels with Gen. Casey when on one hand we're told that service personnel have everything planned out for and about them yet on the other hand the unexplainable is rationalized as an isolated incident that just so happens to proliferate an unnecessary and dangerous attitude of prejudice within the military.
More anger...
More resentments...
Exactly what the Corporate Megalomaniacs want--powerless, desperate slaves killing powerless, desperate slaves...
Distractions...
Justifications...
More fear...
More hate...
More deaths...
"Let them fear, as long as they obey."
could melt adamantinum (sp?). They know christofacist and race based gangs are controlling many units. It works right now because these losers have no other job that will let them discriminate with impunity. So the army keeps its numbers up by taking in and training in lethal force the dregs of our society.
eeeeou.

Also my alloy reference is based on the X-Men theme. A trip through mythology is nice though.
I'm more literature based as opposed to yours being media based.
I prefer to think of it as cultus obscura based.
And X-men is media, both as comic book and movie, not literary.
you want to see the dregs of society ,
just go to any prison when they change the guard .

Pampers?
lol
The General spoke well. What bothered me was George talking about recruitment like it was wrangling cattle.
like a trip to the mall as in the movie Fahrenheit 911?
Is a lot less army, navy, defense!
[deleted--you've spammed every single thread with that. The message has been made. Any further spamming may result in a temporary loss of posting rights.]
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness that is killing America!
I've seen a lot of hate posts by people who have absolutely no knowledge of Islam going on about how awful Islam is. It is sort of like judging Christianity by Timothy McVeigh.
Speaking of which, as another post mentions, the number of white supremacists in the military has grown by leaps and bounds thanks to a blind eye by the recruiters who needed warm bodies and the desire of their leaders to have trained fighters for their hoped for race war. The christianists have also joined in large numbers although they seem to predominate more in the officer corps.
If you want to claim that diversity is hurting the military, these are the two groups that you need to cull out. Both of them have ulterior motives that are inimical to our country and its traditions. The former want to purify the race by eliminating "subhumans" while the latter want to destroy democracy so that it can be replaced by a theocracy, one designed along their particular warped ideas of what their god wants.
"this is not the first case we've seen of fratricide by someone with a Muslim background in the military. How do you deal with this challenge?"
What wasn't mentioned is that the number of cases of fratricide by nonMuslims far outnumbers the few cases that Steph would be able to dig up. How many guys have been killed by homophobes, by white supremacists, by "chemically altered" (drugs, alcohol) soldiers, by military rapists? Why not get into the number of spouses and kids killed by military people who have come back from active duty? For steph to make a comment like this is totally and completely beyond the pale.
the mass killing of civilians by contracters in Iraq.
I've been mentioning that on most posts I see about the case. The illegal wars are the problem not that we have some service members that are Muslim. There are Christians killing fellow American soldiers all the time and that gets completely ignored. Granted those cases may not be on this scale but taken as a whole they are much more damaging.
well maybe if the RWs quit trying to steal other countries natural resources we would not have these BS wars .
Nay ,
& its 1 , 2 , 3 what are we fighting for
dont ask me i dont give a damn
next stop is pak-a-stan
Why is the flag on the general's arm backwards (mirrored). It's not that they've mirrored the camera, as there is ABC's logo on the wall behind him, which is straight. Could be blue-screen, maybe. Very odd.
I've only had one beer... am I'm drunk?
Nevermind, I see the poster below answered that.
This link will answer that

I think we should break the Army up into religious factions. The marines can be all christians, the army muslims, Airforce the Athiests and the Navy can be all the other wannebees
You can't say things like "I'm worried this incident will have an impact on diversity in the military" when you are yourself part of the management of the military that determines its diversity. If you don't want it to have an impact on diversity, don't let it have an impact on diversity.
It's blatantly deceptive for the people who are responsible for making the decisions to speculate on what decisions will be made. You either have soldiers under your command or you do not.
My tin-foil hat is practically on overload with this.
