"Totalitarian" tactics. No, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) wasn't talking about the racial and homophobic names tossed at Democratic members yesterday: He was blaming the Democrats for 'taking over one-sixth of the economy' and thus forcing Tea Party protesters to yell words like "n*gger" and "f*ggot".

So far, not one major Republican politician has denounced their behavior. And thus concludes another chapter in the Big Republican Book of Moral Values and Personal Responsibility. I'll send that "wahhhmbulance" right over!

Next election we need commercials of what these teabaggers are saying and writing on there signs, and the non-answers and excuses their supporters give.

So far, not one Republican politician has denounced their behavior

There was this: On CNN's State of the Union, Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, called the slur directed at Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, 'contemptible.' 'I denounce it in the strongest terms,' Pence said.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/03/21/house-republicans-denounce-racial-slurs-hurled-at-democrats/?hpt=T1&fbid=ooddLR9_OqJ

Not defending Republicans but we should be accurate.

been denouncing, and sometimes hanging in effigy, our first black president as a Nazi, Marxist, Stalinist, commie, socialist, treasonous, murderous Joker, witchdoctor with a bone in his nose--along with being the AntiChrist? And, sorry, I hardly think ONE weak-ass denouncement absolves ANY Rethuglican from being complicit in this travesty that is the Teabag Nation.

“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”

DaveZ's picture

Unequivocal statements like what I quoted previously shouldn't be made by progressives. It is factually untrue that "not one Republican politician has denounced their behavior" when "one Republican politician" says exactly that as quoted on CNN.

Susie Madrak could add your observations about the right's attacks on President Obama and I would agree.

You see the distinction? I think it's important to make.

glogrrl's picture

about those lying bas*ards, and I just saw the King of All Liars on This Week: KKKarl Rove, ranting and raving about the downfall of the Republic because of the "jamming down the throats" (god, how I hate that phrase) of the healthcare bill with the American people. My blood pressure is up 20 points, and since I have high blood pressure, that's in the danger zone. Keep up the good work keeping us truthful....I would never want to be a liar of the magnitude of the Rethuglicans... or a liar in any respect.

DaveZ was just trying to set the record straight. He's wasn't trying to set you straight. I don't know about an absolutist, he was just trying to be truthful. He doesn't want us to be seen like the republicans by making blanket statements that go against reality.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

DaveZ's picture

The difference between progressives and blogs like C&L is the intent. Anywhere else it would have been meant to mislead people. Here I recognize it was only a mistake.

But then again we can't ever take Republicans to task for the facts if we don't have them straight ourselves.

Does that really mean I'm an absolutist?

ricky's picture

but you just can't do that.

That said, from what I've seen of C&L since 2004 - they actually care about the facts and are not playing us all for fools.

We are the self-correcting mechanism that media lacks implicitly.

"Appearing on Meet The Press, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele distanced the party from the racist and anti-gay language that demonstrators hurled against Rep. John Lewis (D-MA) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). "What you had out there yesterday were a handful of people who just got stupid and, and said very ignorant things," said Steele. "And neither party, I believe, are associated--or should be associated with that."

Has introduced a resolution to condemn the teabaggers and this WAS an official Tea Party even, which was attended by Republicans. So what's worse, a print ad that says "Betrayus" or spitting upon and using bigoted slurs against lawmakers?

Barack Obama: Change we can only imagine

glogrrl's picture

not to mention that a huge number of those disgusting signs had a blacked-out statement at the bottom which said "Paid for by the RNC". And the poor demented crazy teabaggers tried to say they didn't know how those signs got there--"they were just there when we got there". I'd say that's an added incentive to condemn these lying bas*ards.

You should have seen all the phony crap he blathered during his first campaign about being from our rural agricultural county and upholding small town main street America values.

As far as I've been able to tell, in his entire congressional career, he has never... and I mean never, EVER... voted for anything that was of any benefit to small town main street Americans.

He is as thoroughly bought and paid for by corporate and Yacht Party interests as it's possible for any congresswhore to be and anyone who even listens to his drivel, let alone believes or supports it is someone too far gone to save anyway.

Think of him as a Rush Limbaugh with a modicum of manners.

It's called, "True Colors".

They're not being denounced by the republican party because they are displaying exactly what the republican party represents. They are not 'outliers' on the bell curve - they are not the exception to the rule - they are the rule.

Michael Steele is merely the token that they put up front to try and appeal to the non-racist moderate republicans. He's even too stupid to realize that - but then again - everybody has a price, don't they.

I'm glad they are being true to their allegiance - which is obviously 'white supremacy'. At least we know what we're dealing with.

Who knew?

derekthered's picture

our country has systemic problems, especially with employment, the right continually tries to bend reality to fit their dogma, this pretty much causes them to become unhinged. reality does not fit their notions, so it must be totalitarianism.

i doubt this yahoo has read "The Gulag Archipelago" to see what real suppression is, survivors of the camps would laugh in this guys face.

i say this as someone who has been on the left for over forty years, this guy has no clue what he is talking about.

pissed off patricia's picture

The tea baggers pulled the scab off themselves yesterday and republicans didn't want anyone to see what has been festering under that scab. Of course we knew it all along but now the putrid proof is out there.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

you don't hear such nasty language from the left. It saddens me to hear racial and homophobic slurs thrown about. I thought we were better than that.

pissed off patricia's picture

And that is one of the primary differences in the two parties. We don't do that sort of thing. Sure we raise a little hell once in awhile, but that's to keep us from going nuts. :)

even the good ones, don't mention how many treaties we broke with the indians, course i haven't been to school for a while, maybe they do now. how many people have ever heard of osceola, and how we did him, i only bring him up because he was one of my childhood heroes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osceola

people like this may have been home schooled, or gone to "christian" universities, they don't have the wherewithal to deal with america as it is today.

pissed off patricia's picture

I have read several books about Osceola and I know the horrible way he was treated. Thinking back about his life, we made it a living hell. I don't think anyone is proud of that fact.

was one of my big time heroes, i was quite impressed with how he pulled a six-inch spike out of a stone floor, with his teeth, one time in order to escape, could be apochryphal, but it is the kind of thing that impresses a kid.

but the point stands, if you are spoon fed american exceptionalism you grow up with a really distorted view of things.

all i have to say is, custer had it coming.

garcia's picture

This dumb ass forgets that Obama was elected by 67 million Americans. If that is totalitarianism, he better hit the history books and read about it,

Being a Republican he finds racism and bigotry perfectly OK.

bpaskin's picture

I wish the Dems introduced a single payer bill and were taking over 1/6 of the economy. Instead the insurance companies get more people with some regulations.

As for totalitarian tactics, how about when being against Bush Jr people were being called traitors, spying on everyone, invasion of another country based on a lie? I did not here these people complain then.

You are aware Rep.Nunes that quite apart from the rabid racism and bigotry this kind of over the top rhetoric encourages, liberals are also be murdered?Like,I don't know...in their own churches?
You also must be perfectly aware of what an utterly modest proposal this bill is when compared with,oh let's say...every other country in the industrialized world?
I will say one thing. If "karma" means anything at all, then you and your GOP pals? You're completely fucked.

"NUNES: Yeah, well I think that when you use totalitarian tactics, people, you know, begin to act crazy. I think, you know, there’s people that have every right to say what they want. If they want to smear someone, they can do it. "

So, people have every right to say what they want, Mr. Nunes? If I want to smear you, I can do it, Mr. Nunes? If I were to call you a corporate butt-tongueing horse's ass, that would be OK, Mr. Nunes? If I were to accuse you of giving aid and comfort to raving, radical anti-abortion murdurous scum, you wouldn't have a problem with that, Mr. Nunes? If I were to infer that you were a misogynostic, racist, homophobic, steaming pile of malignant, maggot encrusted cow crap, you would just smile pleasantly, Mr. Nunes?

Alrighty then, I said it.

This is a level of "claim that they're doing what we're attempting to do" I haven't seen since the Church of Scientology began claiming that psychiatrists/psychologists are trying to "enslave" society.

This is a lot like "If you weren't so cute I wouldn't have to rape you." Thanks for the great advertising material for the 2010 elections, douche bags!

..on that tired '1/6 of the economy' meme. It's the friggin' insurance companies that have jacked it up so high with their endless lust for higher profit margins. If the US had government-run single payer health care it would cost half as much and cover everybody. At least that's our experience in Canada.
