Via ThinkProgress. The question of the day is, is Orrin Hatch a liar - or simply demented? And if he's demented, should he stay in the Senate? (Obviously, if he's a mere partisan liar, he fits right in.)

Last night, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) delivered an hour-long speech on the Senate floor condemning the Democratic health care reform bill and accusing Democrats of displaying “the arrogance of power” in trying to pass health reform before the holiday recess. Hatch predicted that if Republicans had 60 votes and control of all three branches of government, they would “get this country under control”:

This will become one more example of the arrogance of power being exerted since the Democrats secured a 60-vote majority in the United States Senate and took over the House and the White House. I dream some day of having the Republicans have 60 votes. I’ll tell you one thing, I think we would finally have the total responsibility to get this country under control and I believe we would. But we never come close to that. There are essentially no checks and balances found in Washington today just an arrogance of power with one party ramming through unpopular and devastating proposals on after the other.

Senator Hatch, are you smoking crack? The Republican Party not only had control of the country, y'all got it in exactly the sad state it's in today. Remember the tax cuts for the wealthy that ballooned the deficit? Remember Medicare Part B, which did the same for Medicare?

Remember the weapons of mass destruction, the reason we "had" to invade Iraq?

Under Republican control, we had deregulation, stagnant wages and massive increases in the number of Americans without health insurance.

Maybe it's time you walk over to that medical clinic they have in the Capitol building and ask them to evaluate your memory. Because seriously, either you're losing it ... or you're just another shameless Republican liar.

He clearly has had a memory breakdown..OR, his insurance bribes got bigger...

The senator from planet Utahramus, one billion light years from reality, really does need to heed Susie's suggestion and take a stroll over to the Congressional Medical Clinic and get checked out...he's gone.

Anais's picture

And in six years drove this country into the worst hole it's been in since the Great Depression. And Hatch wants the chance to do it all over again? Indeed, Hatch either was smoking crack, had a convenient memory loss or thinks the nation has collective amnesia. Well, there are those of us who do not forget!!

gump's picture

Under Republican control we went from a record surplus to a record deficit, more and more people fell into poverty, more and more people lost jobs, health care and homes. More Americans died from violent acts of terrorism and unjust wars. We were lucky to come out of Republican control with a country. You want to see a nation go the way of the Soviet Republic? Give Republicans absolute power. Mexico will have to build a way to keep us out.

Did he mean to say that if the Democrats had 60 votes, they could get the country back on track?

And I have seriously hated Sen. Hatch for decades, primarily because of his role in the Iran/Contra hearings.

Since then he's been on the wrong side of every issue imaginable. He's low enough to crawl under the belly of a snake wearing a top-hat.

I'm sure there are at least 60 delusional dupes out there that would vote for the fraudulant and backward party you call the GOP. Now getting those 60 in the Senate---hardy fucking har har, don't make me laugh. Your grandchildren will never see such a thing in their lives let alone you thanks to your massive incompetence. Your party needs a workable plan that involves an extreme makeover, not your psychotic complaining and grumbling.

They love to project like this because they know just how irritating it is.Hatch is perfectly aware that even with all the "power" the Dems now have, they are insisting upon playing by the rules rather than pounding things down the GOP's lying throats like I would dearly love them to do,and as the GOP did without hesitation or remorse or apology to the Dems for 8 long arrogant muscle flexing, fist pumping years.

The Democrats have slowed the republican depression. The Democrats have slowed the republican loss of millions of jobs. The Democrats have put a focus to the republican wars for profiteering. The Democrats have accepted and are managing the republican failure to provide for the American common wealth. The Democrats have brought some legitimacy to leadership over riding the republicans lack of ability to manage themselves. Orrin Hatch is just a Pathetic Cultist (lds). It is obvious he and his kind need to be removed.

you're right, it is obvious.

Neither party really represents who they pretend to represent. They represent their employers. The banksters and corporations. I can find little effort on either side to do anything but preserve winner take all predatory capitalism. The average Conservative during this decade didn't get more freedom, outlawed abortion, ending of the welfare state, prosperous or any of the other things that republicans promote. We on the other side have similar problems.....Because, by in large, they don't work for us.

I happen to think a focused discussion on greed and how and when it becomes a harmful thing is imperative in our economic discussions. The right will never touch it though. They will poo poo it ..because it scares them.

If a Dem has the audacity to challenge a rethug's remarks, it's because the Dems are being bullies. If no Dem challenges, then it's because the Dems knew they were right otherwise they would have challenged said remarks. There is no winning, no bipartisanship, no nothing with the RW as it currently exists. The Dems are leaning so far right now, I don't really understand why the RW has become such whiny tittybabbies

I'm so pissed at the Democrats lack of unity and leadership to get it done. As it stands now why even vote for them when they won't do what they where elected vote... ALL because of bribery called lobbyist contributions... our country has be bought out.

Unfortunately, cowardice and capitulation have diluted everything. From what true health care insurance reform could be, to a lack of action on any glbt issues, to the disastrous decision to occupy Afghanistan.

Orrin and his band of psychotic plunderer's "fixed" the country real good when they were in control.

If only they had 60 votes, they could have stolen 50% of all wealth from working people instead of just 26%.

I can just see Old pasty asses 60 vote agenda:

1. Cut ALL capitol gains and income taxes to zero. Then triple payroll taxes to make up for it. This will be the main focus of the "patriot's for economic equality" initiative.

2. Give a tax break to corporation's that eliminate health coverage for their employees. This will be called the "fighting socialism initiative."

3. Pass unlimited compensation packages for CEO's. This could easily be offset by capping worker pay at $5.25 an hour; $6.25 an hour if you have a college education. This will be part of the "the skies the limit when achieving the american dream" initiative.

4. Impose the death penalty on anyone who associates with, or tries to form a union. This word (union) shall be stricken from the english language 3 years after the "let workers choose" inititative is passed.

5. Require all judgicial nominees to take an oath of allegiance to the "free-market" globolization is good GOP 1st commandment. This will help to hasten the military induced capitalistic freedom that all exploited 3rd world people are craving. This will be covered in the "corporation's are american's too" initiative.

6. Defund all public education, and make it illegal to hire anyone with expertise or experience in the subject area they teach. This will save education, because the teacher's and their evil union's (this word will be banned in 2014), will no longer be able to "soil" the minds of our innocent youngster's, who are suppose to be getting prepared for a career in occupying 3rd world countries who have valuable natural resources. This will enable us to put god fearing, anti-abortion evangelical high school educated mom's in every classroom, who will also be happy to do their patriotic duty by working for free! This plan would be implemented under NCLB, and be called the "excellent education should be free to everyone" initiative.

7. And finally, round up and execute all the old folks and take back their social security checks. These dollars shall be returned to the governmet, so it can be used to make the top 1% even richer. This legislation will be called the "eliminating economic stress for the eldery" initiative.

What a world to long for. If only Orrin could have his 60-vote dream come true.

I have not only been a student of history but also a witness to a half-century of the rapacious thuggery of the Republican Party. As such, I fully comprehend the Double-Speak / New-Speak dialect and associated colloquialisms you employ to convey your message of utter disdain for working-class Americans and the Rule of Law. With that preface out of the way, I will proceed with my main points:

Firstly, over the course of forty years of various Republican administrations, your Party has already managed to "fix" this country in many ways far in excess of the 69 positions listed in the Kama Sutra. Enough really is enough. Anyway, the lab results are back, and your Party has not only spread the usual gamut of STDs to this country and across the Globe, but you are now hereby informed that your Party is also a carrier of Auto Immune Deficiency disease. You have, in point of fact, doomed this country to certain death.

Secondly, your double entendre "joke" alluding to the process of "fixing", as in the spaying and neutering of pets, was not appreciated, especially in light of the fact that your "mission" of destruction of this country has already been accomplished. All that remains is picking the remaining flesh off the bones of the carcass, like any scavenger species.

Of course, you and the Republican Party you represent are nothing more than an organized band of misogynistic sociopaths, nothing more than parasites in a far less than symbiotic relationship with the body politic host. The sooner your kind spring free from this mortal coil, the better for the rest of us.

Now go fuck yourself, Senator!
