Corn squared off with Washington Examiner correspondent Susan Ferrechio, who naturally cited the New York FBI office as her rebuttal.
November 1, 2016

David Corn appeared on Tamron Hall's show today to discuss his blockbuster report on Mother Jones about Trump's ongoing relationship with Russia and Vladimir Putin. He was joined by Washington Examiner chief Congressional correspondent Susan Ferrechio, who argued that it was all simply false because the New York FBI office says so.

At this point, let's all agree that the New York office of the FBI is nothing more than an opposition research tool for Donald Trump, shall we?

After describing just how concerned his source was about the possibility of Trump working in concert with the Russian government, Ferrechio dismissed it as a story from one source, unsubstantiated, and already debunked by the New York Times, who also uses unnamed FBI sources, presumably in their home town.

No matter how many times Tamron Hall tried to bring the discussion back around to Corn's report, Ferrechio was staying with the GOP talking points about email.

David Corn's reporting is, as always, impeccable. He isn't a flack reporter who just tosses things out onto the stage without first having carefully checked and rechecked them. And he says this:

I met this former senior intelligence officer who's really an expert and specialist in Russian counterintelligence for an intelligence service that we all would respect. and learned he had been sending very detailed memos to the FBI throughout much of the summer based on his own work that he did with Russian sources that was indicating there was a Russian operation for a couple of years ago to cultivate Donald Trump. and he believes in terms of the FBI, they got more information and he provided it, that this was a subject matter that they were, of course, keenly interested in.

I saw some of the memos he sent. the memos, he doesn't identify the sourcing by name though he describes it and I'm sure to the FBI, would give the actual names but something like a foreign minister official, a former Russian intelligence officer or somebody at the hotel when this meeting happened says this, that, the other thing. so that's sort of the level of detail that he would get into and my story at MotherJones.com, highlights a few of the bullet points he gave to the FBI. He didn't want to get into the details because I couldn't corroborate them myself.

Some of those details include "an established exchange of information between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin of mutual benefit."

And also, this. "Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance."

Pretty significant stuff, and absolutely consistent with Russian counterintelligence operations, too.

You'd think everyone would be keenly interested in such information, right? Well, not Susan Ferrechio, who sees it all as a big nothingburger.

When asked whether Republicans as well as Democrats should be concerned about this information, she answered, "I think Republicans are a little bit more concerned about the current e-mail investigation with Hillary Clinton and what that would portend for her if she became President."

Oh. Yes, of course. We are all worried about whether Huma Abedin might have had an email on her estranged husband's laptop that was retroactively classified, as opposed to having a Republican candidate who has been compromised by a foreign power. Perspective is clearly everything.

But really, what it comes down to is trust, and Ferrechio trusts the FBI more than a well-respected intelligence operative, apparently.

Corn, exasperated, finally threw his hands in the air. "It seems like you can't handle the truth here. if you want to say it's a coincidence then it's a coincidence --"

Ferrechio parried, "I guess it's the FBI that can't handle the truth."

Corn finished his original thought. "--that Trump's a candidate very helpful to Putin."

Round and round it goes, where it stops...we all know. At the ballot box. These reports, along with the FBI's meddling in the election, have convinced me that we must pull out all the stops and not just elect Clinton by a landslide, but also flip the Senate AND the House in order to then clean house.
