The Morning Joe crew couldn't wait to pat Donald Trump on the back for "letting go" of the Hillary Clinton investigation. Now that it worked to get Donald Trump in the White House.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: The FBI reiterated it's stance from July not to pursue the investigation against Clinton.
MIKA BREZINSKI: I think they were looking toward a Clinton administration, and I don't think they had any concept of what was going to happen here and it would have been Trump who made this decision.
First of all, Trump doesn't make the decision, even after the inauguration. The President doesn't decide who is a criminal and who isn't. The FBI investigates and can make recommendations, and the Justice Department decides if they will prosecute.
SCARBOROUGH: I don't think you can say they are echoes of 1974 when Ford pardoned Nixon, and at the same time there will be members of the Trump base that will be angry he did this, and you don't want to go into a new year somebody out of public life. It's just not good for the country.
You're right about the base, Joe.
PS. You know what's not good for the country, Joe? President Donald Trump.
But Michael Schmidt of the New York Times makes the important points. First up, that the FBI is not going to appreciate being told by Trump what they do or do not investigate. And then there's the obvious:
MICHAEL SCHMIDT: But on the foundation, if you are investigating the Clinton Foundation, why aren't you investigating the Trump Foundation? People say the allegations about the Trump foundation are far worst than the Clinton Foundation, and there's better evidence there.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: There you go.
MIKA BREZINSKI: [Apparently confusing Trump Foundation and Trump University] Settled. doesn't have the time.
SCHMIDT: This would be the end-all of Clinton investigations. What is this? 25 years?
[OFF CAMERA]: There's still Chelsea, to run.
SCARBOROUGH: I don't know, the Clintons are the Clintons and they will figure something else.
