A former congressional candidate from Mississippi was charged with criminal mischief on Thursday for destroying a Satanic Temple of Iowa display at the state capitol, the Des Moines Register reported. The display is legal under Iowa law. But defendant Michael Cassidy thinks his religion trumps the law. “My conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree," he reportedly said.
Iowa’s conservative governor, Kim Reynolds, who has endorsed DeSantis, defended the law. “In a free society, the best response to objectionable speech is more speech,” she said.
But DeSantis is on the side of the law breaker, Christian fascism and against the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of religion. He even claimed his stance is pro-American:
“Satan has no place in our society and should not be recognized as a ‘religion’ by the federal government,” DeSantis said on X, formerly Twitter. “I’ll chip in to contribute to this veteran’s legal defense fund. Good prevails over evil — that’s the American spirit.”
We can understand why DeSantis would want to make a big show of looking like a Super Duper Christian in Iowa, where he is losing bigly in the upcoming caucus to Donald Trump. But instead of going after the frontrunner, a guy who boasted about grabbing women by the p***y, who paid hush money to a porn star and is currently facing nearly a hundred felony charges for plotting a coup, stealing classified documents and mishandling them – DeSantis is making a big show of putting Christianity over the law and the constitution in order to help a lower-level crook. I’m sure that will help him beat Trump next month – not.
Meanwhile, DeSantis might want to pay attention to the Christian values – i.e., the lack thereof – right in his Florida backyard. Two of his “family values” cronies, Christian and Bridget Ziegler, are embroiled in a threesome and rape scandal and refuse to resign. Christian Ziegler is chair of the Florida GOP and has been accused of rape by the threesome gal pal.. His wife and threesome partner, Bridget, is a co-founder of Moms for Liberty and a hand-picked member of DeSantis’ Disney oversight board, created because Disney criticized DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
I haven’t heard a peep of contrition or explanation from DeSantis about how the Zieglers rose to such prominence under the nose of a governor so devoted to policing morality.
The fact that DeSantis is shoving his Christianity down the throats of Iowans in defiance of a Republican state’s law and the U.S. constitution instead tells you everything you need to know about this loser.
