It’s been less than a week since Donald Trump took over the Republican National Committee and installed daughter-in-law Lara Trump and other toadies to run it. On Monday, the new leaders purged the organization of “bureaucrats” and effectively merged it into the Trump campaign.
Two days later, a federal lawsuit was filed in the swing state of Michigan for a massive voter purge, Democracy Docket notes, despite the fact that a federal judge dismissed a similar lawsuit from a right-wing group just two weeks ago. “Citing scant evidence,” the RNC’s complaint states, “[v]oter fraud is very real in Michigan. Several recent elections have suffered from voter fraud,” Democracy Docket’s Rachel Selzer writes.
The Trump RNC promises a far more intensive effort gaslit as “election integrity.” A Washington Post article about the “restructuring” of the RNC buried a few paragraphs that should alarm everyone who really cares about election integrity. Note that Chris LaCivita is both RNC chief operating officer and Trump campaign co-manager:
Additionally, LaCivita is installing Christina Bobb — a former OAN reporter who has espoused false claims that the 2020 election was stolen — as senior counsel for election integrity. Bobb is the author of a book called “Stealing Your Vote: The Inside Story of the 2020 Election and What It Means for 2024” and promoted the audit of Arizona elections.
“I’m honored to join the RNC and thrilled the new leadership is focused on election integrity,” Bobb said in a statement. “I look forward to working to secure our elections and restore confidence in the process.”
The new leadership at the RNC has discussed a broader effort over the coming months to challenge voter identification and signature verification rules that were put into place for the 2020 election.
“The RNC’s new posture as it relates to litigation is much more offensive and much less defensive,” LaCivita said in the interview.
Meanwhile, as Democracy Docket also noted, Lara Trump has been boasting about setting up “the first ever integrity division at the RNC” with “massive resources going to this one thing.” That’s what she told Sean Hannity Tuesday night. She also declared, “We can leave nothing to chance. We have to fight fire with dynamite in this election,” as she made an on-air pitch for volunteer poll watchers, poll workers and lawyers to help “dynamite” the effort.
Lara Trump made a similar vow to “leave nothing to chance” to get her father-in-law re-elected when she appeared on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo show, about two weeks ago. She told Bartiromo viewers, “We need to have an Election Day operations [sic] all across this country like we've never seen and we need to make sure that nothing is left to chance that on November 5 of this year, Donald Trump will indeed become the 47th President of the United States."
