After confirming that Kennedy was a member of the Libertarian Party and had filed the necessary paperwork, there was the small matter if Kennedy would even accept the nomination should he win the vote. No one knew as Kennedy wasn't in the room. So the Party Chair phoned him from the podium. Kennedy hesitated, as he probably wasn't programmed yet to respond to that question. In the end, he did accept, and called the nomination "a great honor." Libertarians chose Chase Oliver instead, the former Democrat/Independent and now Libertarian.

This bit of farce didn't matter much either, as Kennedy would secure just 19 votes from the 991 cast (or about 2%).

The Libertarian National Convention briefly ground to a halt Sunday as Party Chair Angela McArdle phoned Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from the podium to tell him he had been nominated for consideration as the Party’s presidential candidate.

After confirming that Kennedy was a member of the Libertarian Party and that he had filed the proper paperwork, McArdle asked the delegates, “Does he accept the nomination?”

A man in a Kennedy T-shirt answered, “We have confirmation that he does.”

However, McArdle wanted to hear those words from Kennedy himself.

“Do you want me to call him and ask him if he accepts the nomination?” McArdle asked and received a resounding, “Yes!” from the delegates.

While standing at the podium, McArdle dialed Kennedy on her cell phone.

She could be heard saying into the phone, “I’m at the podium and need to ask you if you accept the nomination.”

Some members grew impatient waiting for Kennedy to answer, with one woman asking the chair to pass the gavel so they could get on to other business.

McArdle finally turned back to the microphone, saying, “He’s going to get back to us!”
