Hunter Biden is once again being pulled into a congressional fight over the business dealings of presidential family members—but this time, the witness list includes a considerable addition: Donald Trump Jr.
Sen. John Curtis, a Utah Republican, has asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena both Hunter Biden and Trump Jr. as part of a proposed investigation into whether family connections to the presidency have been used for financial benefit, preferential treatment, or access to foreign and domestic interests.
The Utah Republican’s request comes after reports that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev helped fund lavish post-wedding festivities for Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, including celebrations on a private island in the Bahamas.
Curtis argued that Congress should apply the same scrutiny to presidential families regardless of party. He specifically pointed to Hunter Biden’s past business relationships with foreign entities, while questioning Trump Jr.’s international business dealings, cryptocurrency ventures, real estate activities, and relationships with foreign figures.
Hunter Biden, however, has already appeared before Congress for sworn testimony. According to Sen. Dick Durbin, Hunter has previously provided a sworn deposition concerning allegations of corrupt activity, while Trump Jr. has not yet done so. Durbin said he supports Curtis’s request for an investigation.
“Corruption at the highest levels of our government should never be tolerated," Durbin wrote in a statement. "Senator Curtis has made a good faith request that the Senate Judiciary Committee investigate the lavish gift of a Russian oligarch to President Trump’s son as well as any wrongdoing by the son of former President Biden."
“In fairness, Hunter Biden has already given a sworn deposition to Congress on this issue of corrupt activity," he added. "Donald Trump Jr. has not. For the Committee to ignore this matter is to run the risk of being complicit in a coverup. I will join in supporting Senator Curtis’ request of the Senate Judiciary Committee.”
Hunter has also made clear that he isn't exactly running from another congressional appearance. Instead, he has offered to testify alongside Trump Jr.—turning what could have been another round of scrutiny focused on him into a broader examination of the current president's family.
In other words, if Congress wants Hunter Biden back in the hot seat, he appears to be saying: fine—but Don Jr. can pull up a chair, too.
