I sat down with Rep. Jamie Raskin, ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, to talk about his life in Congress, his colleagues, and specifically about the committee’s new report on Trump’s pardons. Raskin’s committee found nearly $1.7 billion in fines and restitution owed to victims wiped out by Trump’s pardons. Money that belonged to defrauded investors or ripped-off consumers went back to the people who took it.

Trump has a criminal process for pardons, and he's organized it...so that would make it. Well, you know. Trump has intermediaries charging $2 million per engagement, with pardon-seekers donating to Trump enterprises or going into business with Trump family members. Then the debts to victims are forgiven on the way out.

The first move was firing Liz Oyer, the U.S. pardon attorney, whose office used to study every case for record, remorse, and restitution. That process is as dead as the dinosaurs. And while the President has pardon power in the Constitution, there's a way around that to reform the process, making bribes illegal.
