White House press secretary Jay Carney announced Friday that the US was planning to take "unilateral and multilateral" sanctions against Libya to encourage them not to use violence against their own people.

Carney said specifics about the sanctions would be disclosed in the near future.

Tripoli, the Libyan capitol, was under siege Friday as forces controled by leader Muammar Gaddafi reportedly killed and kidnapped protesters.
