This day in 1981 saw the strikes continuing in Poland, now sweeping across the country. The Solidarity movement, reeking havoc with the Soviet-backed government and widespread curfews were placed in an attempt to crackdown on striking workers. Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill - Congress was winding up its session before the Christmas break with passage of some bills going down to the wire.

Here are two newscasts from CBS Hourly news - one from 6:00 am EST and the other from 7:00 am EST. News was moving quickly, especially in Poland.
