Chris Dave is a highly versatile and talented drummer. His main focuses are jazz and hip hop, but he has performed as a session musician in both live and studio settings for a vast array of musical acts. In this video, we see him playing a live cover of "Nefertiti" by Miles Davis with his jazz trio consisting of Chris on drums, Foley on bass, and Zhenya Strigalev on sax. While it is pretty difficult to hear "Nefertiti" in this arrangement aside from the melody being played on sax, it demonstrates the musical (particularly rhythmic) mastery of all three musicians. Dave starts out with a tight, comfortable pocket beat that Foley falls right into, but Dave is quick to change it up and show us just what he is capable of behind a drum kit. Throughout this performance, it becomes more clear that Dave is a master of rhythm, changing the beat and tempo to both challenge and compliment the others. However, Foley deserves most of the credit here, as he was able to hold down a consistent beat throughout all of Dave's virtuosic antics. Ultimately, Zhenya ties it all together with the melody line, reminding us that we are, in fact, still listening to a Miles Davis tune.
