This song emerged from an impromptu jam session between Modest Mouse and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. The band had been toying with the idea of adding him as a full time member, and had decided to get together to play and test out ideas. On the first night that they had decided to play together, Marr started playing the riff to "Dashboard", which inspired lead singer, Isaac Brock to start improvising lyrics. The song came together very quickly and a chemistry was felt between the guitarist and the band. Eventually, Marr agreed to become a part of Modest Mouse, touring and recording with them until his departure in 2009, when he decided to join The Cribs. However, his contributions during his time with the band were invaluable in the growth and evolution of their sound and left fans with a lot of great music to cherish and enjoy.

Know any songs with a good backstory?
