R.I.P: FOX's "Half Hour News Hour" Canceled

thhnh-canceled.jpg FOX Opinion Channels dreadful "Half Hour News Hour," billed as the "right-wing answer to 'The Daily Show;" has been canceled. It was really only a matter of time, wasn't it?

Let's take a look back at the show's awful and short-lived life:

It's canceled? Already? :)

Now that's funny :)

Just Me's picture

Gosh, I never got a chance to see the whole show. Only saw bits and pieces here...and it looked like it had the potential of being the lamest, stupidest, unfunniest show ever to appear on TV. A shame, really.

Sarah's picture

My day is getting better and better!! Finally something FUNNY about that show!! Hehehehe

Targa's picture

Never saw it. There was a show?
When?

mister mix's picture

i thought it was canceled along time ago.

Dale's picture

I hope the shows will be available on DVD. Maybe then they'll include funny stuff.

Michael's picture

I hope that SNL is next.

myiq2xu's picture

I guess shit don't float after all.

Dale's picture

First Rove, now this.

michael's picture

if only the shit coming out of the white house was supposed to be funny.

Chris from Canada's picture

I have watched a few bits on youtube and I didn't find the show funny at all. Maybe it's because I am an America hating, terrorist loving defeatist liberal.

Just Me's picture

Michael @ 7:

Talk about off-topic...but completely true. :-)

Tom (not Tom)'s picture

Boy, Grandpa is gonna be pissed....

eric's picture

Now they should cancel Dennis Miller.

Howard Beale's picture

the show wasnt funny or anything like TDS because all they did was hate monger and call people names. Its that right wing humour. They dont understand true satire. Just like not getting anything else. Really kind of pathetic.

Mike's picture

i think it was canceled because Fox viewers couldn't tell the difference between it and its other shows.

Indigowatcher's picture

Schadenfreude, anyone?

*teehee*

This is SO funny! It's just further proof that the brain of the average Fox News viewer is underdeveloped, especially the areas of the brain responsible for humor and critical thinking.

goatsage's picture

Maybe they'll replace it with with that washed-up, has-been, not-funny Dennis Miller.
He could spend a half hour torturing puppies in front of a cheering crowd of young republicans.

TlalocW's picture

Well, you can't really blame the writers or the actors. The problem was that the "comedy" show took the exact same positions on politics as did the other Fox "News" shows so:
a. It was redundant
b. And the average Fox News watcher is of such low intelligence, he thought it was another "news" show but was annoyed/confused at the presence of the laugh track so didn't watch it.

But But's picture

But Rush said yesterday that he just finished another laugh out loud skit for the show and he is never wrong. Unless of course he is hopped up on hillbilly heroin. What a bunch of losers.

Blaed's picture

oh, stupid obnoxious and self serving right wing comedy show that didn't know parody or satire if they could pull it out of a hat...we hardly knew ye. :)

Bud's picture

Relying on market forces is a bitch, ain't it?

Buckley's picture

Lol, what a waste of time that production was.

Art Snob's picture

It's finally been proven ... HUMOR HAS A LIBERAL BIAS!

Now will Dennis Miller just check himself into a rest home for former comedians?

Wes's picture

Never watched it. Dennis Miller is about as funny as an anal cyst.

Tom Piltoff's picture

About time. As somebody said earlier, it's embarrassing how plainly the writers did not grasp WHY The Daily Show is funny.

Ozymandias's picture

You've got to go to the first link which takes you to Metacritic. The actual reviews in the MSM are hilarious.

Chip's picture

The right wing lunatics are just that...lunatics! When will they figure out the simple truth that there has to be truth in the joke for it to be funny! What a bunch of ignorant bastards! So lost in their horseshit that they cannot see anything other than Romney's "good looks"!

soothsayer's picture

Art Snob @ 24:

Now will Dennis Miller just check himself into a rest home for former comedians?

This statement infers that Miller was funny at one time.

Tim's picture

The problem is that it isn't nearly as funny as The O'Reilly Factor. He's the comedy gift that keeps on giving.

Johnny2bad's picture

HahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahaha

myiq2xu's picture

Hatred isn't funny.

Irony can be funny. Putting a "fake news" program on a fake news channel is ironic.

What the Faux News crowd doesn't understand is that Jon Stewart isn't really that funny. He plays the straight man and runs clips of GOPers being themselves.

MT's picture

Look on the bright side. the staff of this failed right wing comedy show will now get a lot of autobiographical material for jokes about lazy, unemployed people sponging off the state.

Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd could do Trading Places III on this plot.

And the punch line is... "No, YOU'RE a drag on society."

Joementum's picture

Now if Fox would just get rid of its other news show parodies ...

Gary's picture

Tim @ 30:

Not nearly as funny as that duo hannity and what's his name.

jay's picture

Just goes to show, something can only be truly funny if it is true.
The right wing can't do comedy because lies are not funny. Just look at their reaction to Colbert's roast of bush. He confuses the shit out of the mainstream cheerleaders like Falafal-man and Hannity because it's like looking in a mirror for them. To attack him would be like attacking themselves. The daily show is entertaining because it is an unbiased look at the truth in an attempt to make funnies. The 1/2 hour news hour was fox's attempt to cash in on what they see as a lucrative format and also to further the narative that they are a 'normal' news network. In 20 years, once the key demo that Fox markets to starts dying off and retiring, Fox will probably die off too.

PaulB's picture

Thank God! Best news all week (save Rove)

It occured to me that while it is laughable that Fox News considers itself a real news station they shouldn't have a "fake news" program mixed in, Daily Show and Colbert run on a "comedy channel" not a "news channel".

Bonkers's picture

Frankly, with the level of emotional retardation prevalent in their existing audience, I thought FuxNoose had a huge hit on their hands.

HAW! That is a nice point! In yet another installment of Fascists Inadvertantly Telling The Truth, FuxNoose was saying, "Hey, we aren't a real news network, so our 1/2 stab at comedy fits right in!"

Even a blind dog finds a bone every once in a while and so FN will give us a bit of truth every so often, even if they don't mean too (especially if they don't mean to).

Olberman said they were pulling it to revamp it for a later date. Honestly I think if they get rid of the laugh track that would be a big improvment.

Legalize's picture

Comedy has a well known liberal bias.

Big Dan's picture

You can't make a "fake news show" on a "fake news network". The REAL FOX News is the comedy show. They should have a laugh track on the REGULAR FOX "news", and it would then be the "half hour comedy show". It already is, it's just missing the laugh track.

Point #2: This proves the self-proclaimed "conservatives" have no sense of comedy. Dennis Miller. You have to have INTELLIGENCE to be funny.

Simon White-Thatch Potentloins's picture

Conservatives are good at scaring people, not making them laugh.

... not intentionally, anyway.

And the writers, and the "talent," and the production. The only thing that could help that show is the personalities just sitting there blinking. As soon as they open their mouths, the funny is guaranteed to jump out the window.

He DID make me laugh once upon a time ... I remember breaking up the time that Rob Lowe did that dance with "Snow White" at the Oscars, and Miller reported on the SNL news that "it was the most awkward choreography since the Lee Harvey Oswald prison transfer."

Bit tough to gain an audience looking for comic relief based on Gaschamber humor & twisted conflicted sexuality.
These people attempting humor is like watching someone eat with their mouth open.

Obviously the show used "comedy" as a front to make infantile, asinine, untrue and ridiculous claims against anyone who oppose the Bush regime. But just because Ann Coulter can tap into the minds of the American imbecile does not mean that this formula will work for everyone.

Really?!?!?!? I thought this piece of shit had been cancelled months ago! I have a couple of conservative friends who actually like Jon Stewart and said they tried watching the Fox show, but thought it sucked and were happy to go back to Stewart and Colbert.

Thank God for Jon Stewart...he may have been the only thing standing between us and a new generation of young Republicans who thought Dennis Miller was actually funny!

I Am A Banana's picture

You can't say they didn't try. They would play clips of that gawd awful program during 'the funnies' segment on The Week. It's obvious they were trying to pass that show off as hip n' funny.

In closing, I'd just like to say: Hawh-Hawh!

XuYu's picture

Maybe America will never be able to laugh again... :-(

cleo's picture

I am sure that Jon Stewart breathed a sigh of relief. No I am really sure that he fell asleep watching this monstrosity. Revamp it. Fox should entomb it.

Zenrage's picture

No shock. It was the worst corporate rip-off since Biker Mice from Mars.

rcm's picture

If Fox wanted to make us laugh they should remake the classic 60's horror sitcoms... Brit Hume as Hermann Munster, Sean Hannity as Gomez Adams and Mann Coulter as Morticia. They wouldn't even need writers.. they could just ad-lib their wacked out idiospeak and I think it would work well.

Ramone's picture

If they really wanted to make this a success, they should have hired Dennis Miller because he's just the funniest comedian ever. He would have got the show to do as well, if not better, than The Dennis Miller show....

:p

When Drew Carey closed the Conservative Comedians Association....

That's funny, if America thinks Chris Tucker's a comedian, seems like everyone could be considered so.

Batocchio's picture

Authoritarians normally lack a sense of humor, and comedy tends to be anarchic and anti-authoritarian, so it's no surprise conservatives just aren't as good at comedy. Add to that the conservativism is inherently unhip and stodgy, and often prudish and scolding. About all they can generate is crude insult comic and bullying frat boy material.

Franken's show was news with jokes,

FAUX is joke news

1/2 Hour News Hour it's news that it's jokes.

ysbaddaden's picture

And yet FAUX news goes merrily along, but meanwhile the Weekly World News is being cancelled.

P.'s picture

As a struggling comic in Los Angeles, I had other struggling comic friends who were asked to audition or submit to the show and refused (despite the fact that we're usually pretty much up for anything). Then they did stand up about how ridiculous the idea was in the first place.

The whole idea of it was really absurd. As a general rule, political humor works when the empowered are taken down a notch by the less so. When you've just got people up top kicking the people below them, it's not funny at all. It's just sad and disappointing.

Jazgar's picture

WHY? WHY!!?? Dear Lord why do terrible things have to happen to great shows?! What about the children? What will happen to them now? Will they have to watch the Islamofascist Comedy News Chanel (contact your cable provider)? Not their fault if the 70% liberal fringe doesn't get truly funny jokes! Mark my words, Jon Stewart, these comics don't run! (sob!) They might get knocked off of the air for not being "sensitive" from time to time, but the don't run! They JOG. They sashay. They strut. They perform tactical retreat maneuvers. But RUN??? NEVER!

Actually, The Half Hour News Hour was fascinating in a train-wrecky sort of a way -- with very rare exceptions like Christopher Buckley, American conservatives are simply incapable of any humor above the level of a schoolyard taunt, and this program was a perfect illustration of that fact. Souless "humor" for souless zombies. Notice how every bit of "humor" they ever attempted required a victim? Not a brunt of the humor but a victim. I got hook on FOX when they showed a lot of T's and A's in their action base shows, and how Ironic that they went right wing and conservatives, when they only reason I watch them was for the raunch factor. It was the one thing they were good at was violence and sex.

The only clip I've seen of it was posted here on C&L. It was very bad. But I thought the show had yet to air. Not even the fall season and they're off the air. nonbeliever's picture

According to the article, their ratings weren't too bad. You think Ailes and crew realized the own irony of calling themselves a news channel while airing a "comedy" show that targeted Democrats and liberals? What really got me was the way Stephanopolous included clips of the show in his Sunday Funnies segment every week. The clips he ran from other shows were genuinely funny and then he fucks up the segment by including the Half Hour drivel. Even those few seconds were painful to watch.

When I first heard about the show, I thought I might have to pretend it wasn't funny, even if it was a little funny. After all, it was supposed to be a comedy show, you'd expect there to be *something* funny about it, even if it was politically wrongheaded. Until I actually saw it, and it was, well we've all seen clips. Truly beyond pathetic and dumb. Really kind of a scary window into the dim minds of Republicans. They're apparently operating on the level of a small child, and not even an intelligent child, one of the slow kids. And these people own houses and cars and walk among us every day, creepy!

Didn't you love Coulter's "deer in the headlights" stare into the camera? I thought I was watching a bunch of zombie robots reciting lines.

MC's picture

I watched the show once... for about 2 minutes. It was sickeningly horrible. Between the laugh track and the overly forced joke lines, I thought I was watching amateur comedy night in a run down hotel lounge. Almost everyone does stupid s*** sometimes that can be pointed out without too much effort. Even though Conservatives seem to be leading the stupid s*** category recently, Liberals also have their fair share of comedy worthy events . I would think that a small staff should be able to come up with enough material to fill around 25 minutes of airtime a week with decent comedy - between the Daily Show and Colbert Report they are able to fill 8 times that amount every week. This of course is assumes the staff consists of free thinking Republicans (don't laugh they do exist) that don't feel the need to constantly regurgitate the ideas of Limbaugh, Coulter, and other conservative, right-wing nut-jobs.

If Fox wanted a comedy show, all they had to do was add a laugh track to O'Reilly.

Keith Olbermann, at one point (I don't know if he's still doing it), did just that, on a feature he had on countdown. A few minutes of clips from Foxymoron News with canned audience reactions.

Maybe FoxyNews owes Keith a royalty payment, because in effect, that's all the 1/2 Hour News Hour was.

Dave @ 134:

Like we ever needed satire to see what a joke the left side of the aisle is...

...a statement for which I thank you for making, because you have just made our point for us...

...if the LEFT side of the aisle was such a joke, then 1/2 Hour News Hour would be finding all those jokes and airing 'em, and the ratings would be through the roof now, would they not?

The joke is on you, bub.
