On the Chris Matthews Show today, NBC’s Howard Fineman revealed that the intelligence community will release “three different reports” in upcoming weeks to “slow down” the administration’s current drumbeat for war with Iran:
The intelligence community over the next few months is going to come out with three different reports on Iran about internal political problems of Iran, about the economy, and about their nuclear capability.
Those are going to be key to decide what the Bush administration is going to do, and it’s the intelligence community I think trying to slow down what the president, most particularly the vice president, want to do in Iran. Read more...

Bush and his generals are playing good cop, bad cop on Iran now. Bush and Rice keep talking about diplomacy while his generals build the case for war. Here's Petraeus working on CNN's Jim Clancy CNN website Oct. 7, 2007:
One reason that there is "no debate" about the six Iranians in U.S. custody is that they haven't been interviewed by anyone but the military, they don't have legal representation, and the military isn't releasing any information about them other than statements like, "If you only knew the truth" by David Petraeus". Jim Clancy didn't bother to follow-up on that statement.
Why can't we know the truth? What's the big secret? Apparently the detainees have made some kind of video taped confessions, so why can't we see those confessions? How were those confessions obtained. Were some of those techniques described in the New York Times used to extract those confessions? There can't be a debate about anything if only one side of the debate has restricted access to the subject of the debate.
Since Bush has no credibility, he's letting his generals build the case for him. Sooner or later we'll some version of, "we tried to do this diplomatically but my generals made me do it."
Which people related to this report does the VP and his staff plan to retaliate against? The public was ill-served by this VP when he made more than 17 visits to the CIA on the eve of the Iraq invasion. The reports are this VP did intimidate, abuse, and dissuade truthful reporting.
It's all well an good to point to a report that attempts to "slow" something; the issue is whether this report will be used as a shield to inject misleading information into the public debate. What types of disinformation has the President, Vice President, and Blackwater-like contractors had included in this report under the guise that it be accepted?
Yes, the report may appear to contradict the President, but the key will be to examine the data as was not done with Iraq to ensure the information regardless the source is real, accurate, and valid. The next issue becomes the legal question: Is the proposed US action against Iran -- whatever it is -- inconsistent with Geneva; or is the report merely an effort to get the nose under the tent to achieve the same result: Support unlawful warfare against Iran, merely later?
Why an Iran war? Here is a senario. Simple, Clinton will probably be the Dem nominee. Current poll numbers show she will defeat any GOP candidate. The GOP has to bring her down. BushCo will do that via the recent Senate Resolution on naming the Iran Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organiziation. Clinton voted for the resolution requesting BushCo to declare the Guard as a terrorist org. BushCo follows through, does the declaration, and uses it as a major reason to take down the nuclear powered terrorist protecting state of Iran. Clinton then will be tarred by Dems as having showing bad judgment on war and BushCo again. She will lose the nomination. Then it is Obama or Edwards for the Dems. Either of whom the GOP figures they can beat since it will be a two war front. No Dem will be perceived as a commander in chief after Clinton is knocked out of the picture. War can be slowed down, but it does seem we are on our way to "Bomb, Bomb, Iran." (McCain will then be the GOP pick.)
This is all part of the strategy for the 2012 pres. elections.
What have we become when rebellion in the military and the C.I.A. are our most effective checks on the military/industrial complex?
They are planning to retaliate against Iran for selling their oil in Euros and not dollars.

I'd say the intel community has good reason to put the brakes on. Bush was pretty quick to blame them for all the bad intelligence he cherry-picked to sell the war.
They might think war with Iran is a great idea, but they're not going to be the whipping boy if things go bad. It's more about CYA than CIA.

The fact that in the past one or two years, the people we usually associate with wanting to start wars and slaughtering of innocents (ie: the CIA, DIA, NSA, etc.) are critical of WH foreign policy, just shows how fucked up the Bush admin is. The other "most under-reported story" is the war between the CIA and the Bush/Cheney/PNAC Neocons.
The Neocon/CIA war dates back to Bush's election, probably before. After 9/11, the Neocons had the power to invent intelligence "facts" as they saw fit, and create strategy based on these lies and fantasies.
These 3 reports will only be a tip-of-the-iceberg glimpse of the intelligence that Americans usually know nothing of, but which drives foreign policy, geopolitical strategy and even trade policy. Iran is only a small part of this big picture.

To understand the Iran situation, one needs to understand two constituencies that support attacking Iran. Bill Moyers did a nice piece on the Christian Zionists, and the Israel lobby was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux entitled "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy".
Without these two groups advocating war with Iran, this would be a moot issue. Hillary is often "buttering" up AIPAC. Pelosi dropped a piece from legislation requiring Congressional support for any attack on Iran, according to the Nation.

Actually, in what we call reality, the military is hurting and doesn't have enough troops. Enlistment is down and more and more people have to keep making multiple trips to Iraq because there is no one to take their place. So, there are not plenty of people in the military.

First, the John Crewdson article in the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Son about the 1967 Israeli attack on the U.S.S. Liberty (and the subsequent cover-up), now word that intelligence reports are attempting to fight back against the Israel/Big Oil/M-I-C/Wingnut Fundie's 's push for a new, "Wag the Dog" war of aggression.

Again, attacking Iran would have absolutely NOTHING to do with threats of nuclear capability or other claims. Attacking Iran would simply be about the fact that Iran HAS OIL! They have a LOT of oil. Sigh. The downside of my good liberal friends. Always trying to reason with the fanatically unreasonable. (My advice: keep a smile, say "that's nice, goodbye", and a weapon ready. I'm not advocating violence, just common sense.) Not that diplomacy is bad as a rule, but does Mr. Bible McNukesalot sound reasonable to you? Methinks he just wants to feel alienated to make himself feel angry. The anger means he can feel justified in... well, whatever he obviously is trying to justify.
The zealous fanatical ravings above (do you think the irony of his similarity to fascist Islam escapes him -- I do) do remind me of the other overt signals recently.
- The "accidental" shipment of live nukes across country.
- The attack on... well, nothing really inside Syria by Israel demonstrating complete mastery over the SAM and radar sites (similar to those of Iran).
This is a new record for subtleness and restraint by this administration, so I do have to give them credit for learning (if slowly). The message was received by Iranians, I'm sure. The REAL question is, "how do they react?" Will this consolidate Ahmanotagaydood's power? Or will this isolate him further from a nation of under 30 year-olds that, by and large, like western culture and goods? Will this saber-rattling help convince the Ayatollah that this guy isn't working out as well as he should?
Signals like this can be useful, IMO. Far more useful than blunt and direct threats by our faux cowboy Georgie. It is essential that we are liked by the people of Iran, but feared by the leaders of Iran. The NUMEROUS AND DEADLY CIA failures (ie. sloppily handing off weapons to the PKK -- fucking stupid. We need Turkey sane right now, not radicalized), and just asinine agitation ops inside of Iraq aside, I think there is still potential for a nuanced policy by this administration to work with the human operations of the intelligence community and produce real, substantial change for once among our Persian friends. Finally.
Let's hope these reports are a step down that path, with a new and better understanding of how to operate as an adult in the world rather than a spoiled 3 year old. But considering the severe damage to intelligence by Dick Cheney ripping out whatever competent parts (read: "not brainless political parrots") he could after 9/11 and re-shuffling and obligatory cronyism by Bush, I really doubt it. Frankly, I'd be shocked if after all this time and money that our intelligence capability to intercept real threats (or effectively influence foreign governments covertly) was actually stronger now than before 9/11. And that, eventually, is going to hurt us.
