Larry Elder is a Wanker
By John Amato Monday Feb 18, 2008 6:01pm
I was driving home from an acupuncture appointment yesterday and I flipped on LA's wingnut radio station. Larry Elder was doing one of his " The Word" segments I guess and he was criticizing Michelle Obama for finally being proud of America.
“Hope is making a comeback and, let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change,” she said during a rally in downtown Milwaukee.
I wish I had the audio, but in typical wingnut fashion, Elder read off his jingoistic list of reasons why he's been proud of America for so many years. From what I can remember of his speech---and since the economy is in total shambles, ole Larry had to compare us with Greece. America is better than living in Greece, isn't it? And he talked about some time he spent in Italy a number of years ago and his big complaint was that the power would go out occasionally. How quickly we forget the comforts of America, he alluded to. I guess Elder must have forgotten all the power outages in LA when it gets a little too hot in the summer.
He brought up Bush 41's high approval rating right after the the first Gulf war. He was so proud. And then he threw in Bush 43's high approval ratings after we toppled the Taliban. Over 70%, he said. Wow, what memories....Aren't the Taliban back by the way, Larry? Was he proud of the Iraq war, or the way Bush handled Hurricane Katrina? Was he proud about the sub-prime mortgage crisis and the massive housing foreclosures? Is he proud of Larry Craig and Mark Foley? He didn't say. I'm sure he was proud of David Vitter though. I bet he gave him an in-studio standing ovation just like the Republicans did. Anyway, Elder, I was so proud of your list of denial.
Send him an email to sage@larryelder.com and tell him how proud you are of the Republicans in power. I'll try to stay off that radio station next time and find KJAZZ, but please Larry--- keep wanking away.

Michelle said somthing stupid.
Yeah, but you're missing the point. We're all proud of America. What separates progressives from conservatives is that progressives think there is always room for improvement, and conservatives think any talk of improvement is unamerican. (That, by the way, is the conservative philosophy in a nutshell. "Everything is either perfect now, or was BETTER in the PAST.")
I think it is so great how everyone is getting all upset over language. Forget thought police, now we have word police. Who cares what Michelle said? How many days are they going to spend analyzing some of the most common phrases in our language?
I wonder what a soldier in Iraq thinks of all this stupid talk. Or a family who lost a child to lead posioning because our country has two inspectors for millions of toys. What about the horrible working conditions for humans in TYSON Plants? What about the billions in profits made by the oil companies who still have their subsidies?
What about all the really important shit going on that nobody cares about because Michelle Obama has the balls to say what she thinks regardless of the stupid fallout from stupid talking heads? What about that?
John,
MSNBC is playing a clip of Michelle Obama speaking that has been edited to make it sound worse. They just cut out a qualifying word in the middle of her speaking:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/19/18435/0161/770/459925
Can you find the clip of this? This is a huge story.
"Larry Elder is a Wanker"
"Brit Hume says something stupid"
is today State the Obvious Day? :-)
great piece, though!
Any word on whether he is proud of our tactics in Vietnam or the number of who are killed, maimed or deformed by "left-over" mines and agent-orange?
There are many things for which Americans should be proud but many more for which we should feel shame and be humbled.
Acupuncture?!! Oh No! Please tell me you're joking!
Dude... you just went down a notch or two in the credibility stakes.
Acupuncture slots in comfortably right between Ouija boards and Phrenology!
In the future... please apply the same razor sharp intellect to your healthcare that you do to politics.
I'm just sayin'...
Larry Elder makes good money lap dancing for rich white republican men.
Can't blame him for saying the shit that says, he's got a family to feed.
Larry, you tool, what are you doing up there on the Bush's porch?
I've been home from work only 2 hours and must have seen that clip already 5 times each on MSNBC and CNN. If I had turned on Fox, I'm sure that figure might be tripled by now. I can only imagine what Fox is doing with this clip.
How lucky for Hillary to get Ms. McCain and so many others in the MSM to carry water for her. In a way it hints at a scary point. We may not be grown up enough as a country to have a true and honest debate about our destiny. Our minds are still drawn to trivia.
poejavlo @ 7:
Funny, I feel much better today...Maybe I'll get my fortune read tomorrow...
Look at the last three posts here. Larry Elder, Britt Hume, Bill O'Idiot how come no one suspends them when they say/do stupid things?
Funny, Larry Elder is sounding a lot like Taylor Marsh.
Michelle said somthing stupid.
Like what, exactly?
[Deleted. Off topic. I'll spell it out for you one last time: Take it to an o-p-e-n t-h-r-e-a-d, p-l-e-a-s-e. Site Monitor]
He is an UNCLE TOM of the 10th degree ... Hard to tell which is worse him or that cockeyed asshole that they always put on MSNBC
Now that's one wankerish promo photo.
I sent him my email letting him know how lucky he's living in the "other" America. Well, here we go with the attack machine. Hang on guys, the ride is going to suck! Hopefully the destination will be worth it!
As Americans we have LOTS to have been VERY proud of since, oh, gee....Christopher Columbus landed and had thousands of Eerowak Indians' hands cut off because they didn't bring him enough gold. Also the way he took young Indian girls as sex slaves was wonderful. Every time I jump on the 10 Freeway in Santa Monica I feel soooo proud to see the giant sign, "THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS TRANSCONTINENTAL HIGHWAY".
And of course our treatment of the Native American Indians was....well, it brings a tear to my eye. It makes me VERY proud. Of course when I read Howard Zinn's book, "A People's History of the United States" it kinda pisses me off. Cause the way he tells it we did something BAD to the Indians!
Okay, the whole "slave thing"....well. That was probably not the "nicest" thing our forefathers could have done. But, hey! They needed help to create all those plantations! And it all turned out fine in the end! Well, except for the whole Civil War thing....but after all the blood dried and the bodies were buried...and everyone kissed and made-up and blacks got their 40 acres and a mule...THEN I WAS PROUD!!! RIGHT??
I tell you what has made me freakin' gush though with pride. All the covert CIA/FBI operations we've done over the years to depose democratically elected leaders of various "bad" countries. I mean, really! We were right!! The people of Chile didn't REALLY mean to elect Allende, right? And the whole Iran Shah thing....I mean. Mossadegh was a boob! The Iranian people needed THE SHAH! They just didn't realize it! And then the damn ingrates had to go and overthrow him and put in Khomeini. Idiots!! I just don't understand why they hate us so much???
Well, I suppose I should shut up while I'm ahead. Wouldn't want to "jump the shark again in a tinfoil hat".
I'm proud of the fact that in America, even wingnut moonbats like Larry Elder have the right to make fools of themselves in public.
poejavlo @ 7:
Ahem. Acupuncture has a track record of thousands of years. Do some research into recent acupuncture news -- you might be surprised to find that acupuncture is helpful in fertility, osteoarthritis, most pain syndromes...
Just because we Westerners don't understand the mechanism for acupuncture, it doesn't mean it's ineffective.
Just saying.
I am proud that we can torture people in such psychologically horrific ways that would make even Vlad the Impaler piddle his dreams...
I am proud that we have enough nuclear weapons to wipe out all multi celled organisms on earth...and ain't 'fraid to use em!
I am proud that we elect the same foul criminal mass murders into power over and over again so they can steal, rape and pillage the futures of our children...
I am proud we outspend the entire world combined on methods and ways to kill other human beings, funding not only thugs and sociopaths around the world, but instituting black ops that cause at the very least blow back which naturally shocks the supremely stupid American people.
I am proud that 18% of our citizens think the SUN revolves around the Earth...
I am proud that we are collectively pissing our species survival away just to enable a pathetically small minority .01% to own and control 90% of the worlds wealth and resources...and even prouder that the people are so castrated that they just lay back and take it.
There is so much to be proud of ... I mean to take total pride in my being for living in this country .. I don't know how I could ever stop .. but I will due to time constraints...
But thats just a tiny fraction of something to be PROUD of .. ...
And I'm Proud to be an UH'Merican... Where at least I know I'm Freee!
I love when people think there is one best country in the whole world. And how it's always the people who have barely spent any time in any other countries and have zero awareness of the laws and cultures and subcultures anywhere else. And how they manage to delude themselves into thinking that everything on their list ONLY happens here. (or, if it's negative, ONLY happens everywhere else. EVERYWHERE!!!) I'd like to see his reaction if we all wrote and told him that what we love about this country are the employment anti-discrimination laws for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people, and the states that allow same-sex marriage, and the way that some cities cover sex changes for their employees.... not that those are exclusive to here either.
I say
there are lots of commenters here who are smarter and more knowledgeable than Larry Elder, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, and all the other easy right-wing targets.
Commenters here, IMO, should use their talents not just to criticise what it is, but to propose a better tomorrow.
Well, let's see.. I believe Michelle is 45 years old. This makes her an adult for approximately 25 years.... Lo and behold, Reagan was elected in 1980... to 1988
Then, Poppy Bush 88 to 92...
Then her opponents husband in 1992 to 2000... Then The Boy Emperor Bush...
So, what is this idiot's point? Looks to me she has good reason to have some shame toward her country for 27 or 28 years of these fine fools... One, Billary, wants to hang around another eight!
Hope not.
Interesting bio...

Maybe he can discuss this.

Hmm ... he doesn't strike me as very wise.
I can never figure out black conservatives, they usually don't seem as crazy as the white ones but they tend to say just as many stupid things and always aimed at other black folk. I mean when you get an idiot like Ann Coulter trying to convince us that the Democrats were the ones opposing our civil rights (ignoring the fact that those Dixiecrats all became Republicants) that's one thing, but then you have guys like Elders and Solwell who say much the same thing in a different way, who do they think they're fooling?
I just dont understand them.
Not to take anything away from the Wanker Dude, but I really believe this is a more important issue, especially for those of us who live in Florida.
Jesus H. Christ, this bullshit is exhausting.
You know what? I haven't been proud of America in years. In fact, when I travel internationally, I tell people I'm from Canada.
And this is exactly the kind of worthless nonsense that makes me wish I really was from Canada.
Man, what a place.
watchdog @ 29:
They get the talking points from The neocon network.
Mike @ 4:
It is NOT an edited version, there are two versions. In the second version she added the word "really" before the word "proud".
Regardless of her intent, this was a political mistake on Mrs. Obama's part and will require damage control. The second version of the quote is the beginning of the repairs.
I really don't like what Michelle Obama said. I have been upset since 2000 about what is happening to our country. I have never liked Bush and told everyone in 2000 and 2004 that if Bush ran against a Pekinese I'd vote for the dog. There is much to be worried about and much to be fixed when the next president moves in.
My husband did 2 tours in Iraq and I've cried over New Orleans. I think we've lost a lot of people and treasure during Bush's "stewardship" of our country. I reject the notion of the "unitary executive" and think we are not now on the right track.
Still, despite that, I'm proud of my country. I'm not proud every single day over every single aspect of it, but I'm proud nevertheless to be American. If Michelle Obama is only now proud of our country, when, arguably, it is in her interest, then I can't get behind that. In fact, it makes me angry that everything else that might count as an accomplishment by her fellow citizens and country has not risen to the level of a potential vote for Barak Obama in Michelle's eyes.
Rico @ 10:
This country is too full of thick-skulled, shallow-thinking morons to actually hold an intelligent debate. I've been saying it here for a while. I wait for the day this country sinks under the weight of its own stupidity.
Larry Elder doesn't care about black people.
Larry Elder has been a wing nut for many years. I use to go to our channel 9 TV to see what he said about a measure in an up coming election and what ever he was for, I was against and vice versa! Thanks Larry for being my reverse barometer for so long!
This is all more, much ado about nothing, she expressed her feeling at the moment and she was right to say it, just as she said it, I was very, very proud the day, I heard my grandson play the guitar in front of his school, I was very very proud, for the first time in my life, when I heard, my daughter was serving in her church as a teacher, very proud.
This crap about, she said something stupid is crap, at any given time, I can be more proud than I've ever been in my life, I've one life to live and it keeps getting better, while there are times when its in the crapper. I was very proud the day, US troops marched into a small town in Texas and told the Blacks, two years after the civil war ended, (Juneteenth Black yearly festival, was born) that they were free, very very proud of those soldiers.
Come on Obama is about WE CAN and Hillary Bill are about MY SOLUTIONS, I wants some who wants to do something, anything... with me, not for me.
Black Republicans are like the Blind Racist skit off the Chappelle show who was a celebrated author of the KKK.
One problem.
Since he was blind he didn't know he was black.
Any black person who considers themselves a member of the GOP remind of that skit.
You would have to be blind or really hate yourself or race to side with the segregationalist.
Opps I meant Christian Conservatives.
All they did was change there name.
The Religious Right and the Conservatives feel the same way about most Americans as Bin Laden does. They want to eliminate us. Immoral, lazy, stupid.
VietVet8666 @ 23:
I do constantly...
bart @ 35:
I guess I'm just a nasty person, but I'm NOT proud of my country right now. When I was bad as a kid my Mother (evil woman that she is) used to say "I still LOVE you, but right now I don't LIKE you." That's the way I feel about the U.S.. The fact that Bush won a 2nd term. The fact that the masses haven't risen up against torture, or indefinite detention, or unprovoked war, or warrantless wiretapping, or no-bid contracts, or lies and death and everything this administration has stood for... I'm disappointed beyond belief in "my fellow Americans." Living in San Diego, surrounded by the reich-wing (letters to the editor regularly endorse torture, I kid you not) -- it's salt in the wounds.
Jeannie See @ 31:
oh man - don't you just want to scream sometimes?!
atown @ 34:
Where is the other one? This is the one where its very clear she says "really proud" and it is edited out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu9Zei11uEc
This is bullshit.
Point taken concerning some guy that has no influence over my life that said something stupid. But how is it that some one who starts a sentence with "I was driving home from an acupuncture appointment..." is not a wanker one's self?
rduke @ 42:
I'm not proud of America, why would anyone be so? I don't think it's anything to be proud of. I have a certain nostalgia for where I grew up and live and it's culture, but that is not 'pride'
Currently everyone should be ashamed.
Nice pose in his photo.
I believe it's called the "Wiping Republican Jizz Off My Chin" pose.
Face it, for a PR girl Michelle made a sloppy comment, and she'll have to step it up if they make it to the general election. Seriously, after the way I saw my own Democrats freak out over Hillary's MLK/LBJ comment, you have no room to talk about people reacting hyper hysterical over absolutely nothing.
I imagine that the Germans were proud to be Germans during WWI and WWII and the Japanese were proud to be Japanese. We can't always be proud of what the leadership does. You would have to be a zombie and couldn't have an individual thought. If not a zombie, a republican.
Rather than call him an even more apt name...Elders is a " " he is deliberate in taking a very moving speech by Michelle Obama and picking through to find any quote which can be used out of context to mean something entirely different. For that honor he deserves not only name-calling but a boycott..don't watch or listen any more to the bastiches.
And really, check out the entire Madison speech anyway ..available on CSPAN, front page, to the left (probably).
I have no acupuncturist and it's barely warm enough here to drive, much less expect the radio to work while you do it. But I just voted for Barack Obama in the Wisconsin primary, so I feel pretty good. Michelle may have overstated but I know what she was getting at. I'm glad not not every word of mine in moments of enthusiasm or frustration are poured over quite so much. You gotta feel for anyone who wishes this kind of examination on themselves.
I think it's snowing again.
poejavlo @ 7:
That's a lie. Acupuncture is a PROVEN health care method, with PROVEN ability to reduce pain and resolve a considerable number of illnesses without significant side-effects. As the insurance industry recognizes, btw. It is MUCH cheaper to send persons to acupuncturists for pain syndromes, for instance, than to do surgery or make them drug addicts.
The way in which it works is still being debated. There is solid clinical evidence that it works.
Old Billy @ 45:
I thought I was going crazy but I noticed the word "really" fuzzed out of the replay too. Calling that "bullshit" is too tame. What's up?
bart @ 35:
Never tell another how they should feel, particularly if they are African-American, about their country. Your posts suggests that we have all experienced the same things in the same light and have been treated the same way, and quite frankly, we haven't.
Jim Crow laws existed only a generation ago, remember?
And by the way, even Neil Cavuto defended Michelle Obama; and I think someone on MSNBC made a good point - when Teresa Kerry said something and it was all over the media Laura Bush said "I'm sure she was taken out of context," you can't tell me that that isn't the definition of class.
"Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964)" became an adult in 1982, during Reagan's first term. There has indeed been little to be proud of since, given 8 years of Reagan (and his warcrimes) and 12 years of Bush bums (and their warcrimes).
Paul in LA @ 54:
Yeah! Most insurance won't cover it though... And drug companies can't patent Chinese herbal remedies... Essentially there's no way to make money shilling acupuncture unless you are a healer with proven results and can get referrals from satisfied patients. (I work for the best acupuncturist in San Diego ;-)
Katie @ 49:
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Thanks. I needed that.
Larry Elder.... penny proud, pound foolish... evidently.... JD
sluggirl @ 59:
I must agree. Accupuncture works. I'm all about scientific evidence and mechanism, and I don't know why it works. But its been around for a thousand years because its effective for some reason.
sluggirl @ 43:
I guess I'm just a nasty person, but I'm NOT proud of my country right now. When I was bad as a kid my Mother (evil woman that she is) used to say "I still LOVE you, but right now I don't LIKE you." That's the way I feel about the U.S.. The fact that Bush won a 2nd term. I reside in San Diego too, and know precisely what you are talking about. I doubt there are few papers in this country that can match this rag in blind support and jingoism for the current administration.
By the way, off topic, but if you live in San Diego and want to see the cleverest, bestest, rhymingest liberal satirist singer-songwriter EVER, Roy Zimmerman is playing for Acoustic Music San Diego this Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Get info here:
http://www.acousticmusicsandiego.com/February.html
Scroll down, the info for his show is towards the bottom of the page. He's AMAZING!!!
Oops, sorry about that. How did it all come out blue and underlined?
sluggirl @ 59:
Well, we are Californians, ahead of the curve. Governor Moonbeam gave us acupuncture licencing in the 1970s, and even though the CMA has tried to shut it down, it is still going.
Moonbeam himself is now in need of a darning needle in the ass, btw.
Clay @ 57:
yeah, classy to say it after the fact, and the damage has been done,
Holly @ 50:
Yeah, I agree, if it's true that she said this at all. The clip was edited. If there were two clips, why would one need to be edited?
Old Billy @ 45:
It was very obvious they edited "really" out. Great observation. Can someone get the original. We know that the right wing will do anything to make the nominees of the democratic party look bad.
Bluestater @ 65:
When you quoted, you left the COLON in. For instance, Bluestater @ 65, the colon after that carries all the formating.
Bluestater @ 65:
Just lucky I guess. (No, you left your "a href" tag open)
X @ 46:
OK, lol...I'll bite. My left arm has been really bothering me lately. My fingers have gone numb at times. I've used AP before and it's really been helpful and very soothing. Plus the 30 minutes of quiet time is great to unwind with. My GP doctor suggested it when I went in for a physical last week.
Now back to the post...
Bart says:
"I really don’t like what Michelle Obama said."
Oh, my dear Bart:
God love ya......
It will be a loooooonnggg time until the convention in August:
http://www.denverconvention2008.com/
(Everybody have their hotels booked for the big demo????)
Michelle, Barack, Hill, Bill and Mac (heck, even Huck and Ron Paul!!!) have PLENTY of time to say/do even STUPIDER (wha??) stuff.
Just sit back and relax. If we give them all enough time they'll dig themselves MASSIVE holes to China...('cept Ron Paul).
Old Billy @ 68:
Whomever edited the clip is obviously taking a cheap shot at Michelle, I certainly don't deny that, but if Michelle is going to be a help to her husband's campaign, she's going to have to learn, that even if you're running in Germany after WWII, the candidate and his wife are ALWAYS proud of their country....might need to be improved, but they are always proud. I'm sure there will be plenty here who disagree with me, but if you want to win, you have to at least have some kind of basic patriotism.
I AM OUTRAGED. What right does Michelle Obama say that ONLY after her husband started to run for president she could be proud of this country.
Well for all you people who BELIEVE THAT PIECE OF CRAP...LET ME TELL YOU. I was proud of this country in the 1960-- AND THE GOD OBAMA WAS ALIVE THEN ---when John F Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson fought for civil rights. The civil rights that Michelle who was never PROUD of her country enjoys. I was proud during the 60's and 70's of our men AND women, who fought the Vietnam War which was very unpopular. I was proud than hell of our country in the 90's when Bill Clinton was president and cleaned up bush's mess. I have been proud of my country ALL MY LIFE and as I said not because some smiling and smirking person thinks he can lead a bunch of cult members to become president. I AM SO DAMN MAD AT THAT STATEMENT inferring that this country is now and wasn't before then to be something to be proud of.
She has right to be proud of HER HUSBAND, IF SHE WANTS, BUT TO SAY THAT EVERYTHING IN THIS COUNTRY WAS WRONG TIL HE THE MAN WHO WALKS ON WATER DECIDED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT. So she doesn't think that even with all the faults of this administration that this is a country to be damn proud of I AM NOT ONE DAMN BIT SORRY I LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY AND I AM PROUD AS HELL OF IT. And if the people like her are not proud of it and think they are the only ones to run it than she can leave leave leave.
After what she said I think Hillary Clinton is the only choice. We see that the disastrous policies of being a dictator are what obama has in mind.
Holly @ 74:
Holly, watch the clip. She said really proud. Her lips were moving when nothing was coming out.
Marge @ 75:
I can't believe that you people believe everthing that you see and hear in the media. Haven't you learned anything yet?
Ron @ 76:
I agree, she obviously said 'really.' Even with the 'really' it's still a sloppy comment. It leaves her wide open for a cheap shot.
Old Billy @ 45:
Your link is bs and is meant to drum up false conspiracy claims. Here are the two quotes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGjR81pFJI4
The final word on acupuncture is here.
http://www.ncahf.org/pp/acu.html
I will be 65 this year. I can't thiink of anytime that I said I was proud of my country. I always felt proud to be an American but it is not something that I would go around saying. Too many people are trying to parse words here and making something out of nothing.
Marge @ 75:
Would somebody please give Marge a Valium (probably 5 mg. would do the trick) and put her to bed? Thank you.
Ron @ 78:
What on Earth do you want me to learn Ron? God only knows....I'm trying!! I'm trying!!!
(And please....don't tell me I'm "trying"...or that I've "jumped the shark with a tinfoil hat on".
Wow, he unfavorably compared living in Greece to living here? He's never been to Crete.
Abbybwood @ 84:
Thank God, someone is trying to get through the B.S.
Needle Nose Ned @ 81:
Lies on every point.
He was on CNN last week pimping his book. He was a wanker then, too.
I was trying to think of a time I was REALLY proud of my country.
Katrina!!! Blackwater was right on the scene! Not allowing anyone to have "their" water. Confiscating guns from law-abiding citizens (that's just a dumb pro-NRA thing anyhow!!).
I watched that Spike Lee documentary on HBO about Katrina and I thought, "Gee. Our Federal Government guys were ON IT!!!"
Okay. Maybe they dropped the ball by a few days, but SO F'ING WHAT??! We got "those people" some really nice trailers to stay in (behind barbed wire fences). So what that there were bad chemicals in the trailers and they had no life to live in those enclaves???? What kinda lives do ya suppose they had BEFORE Katrina hit??? Duh.
Wow, too many folks here drinking the cool aid again. Michelle spoke for many, many of us.
~~~~~
Caveat, I am a die-hard democrat and will enthusiastically support whoever our candidate is. I have always liked Hillary, and have great faith that if she wins the primary, that she would be a very successful president. Unfortunately for her, that’s just not going to happen. Barack is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate. And she just wasn’t ready for him.
~~~~~
What a bunch of nonsense in this “pride” BS.
I am 50, older than both Barack and Michelle. I came of age in the Nixon, Ford and Carter administrations. And let me tell you, I was not all that proud of America during the Vietnam and Cambodian wars. I was not proud of the South’s reaction to the civil rights movement, not proud at all of our racism. Rather, I was ashamed, for years, just ashamed of how we killed so many in innocents in Southeast Asia, and discriminated against so many here at home.
And I was not particularly proud of America through much of the cold war. I, like many, thought that the nuclear arms race (MAD) was indeed madness. Putting our civilization in peril was not something I was particularly proud of.
During the hostage crisis, I was not particularly proud of America. I thought supporting the Shah was foolish. I think that supporting Middle East tyrants is still foolish. And certainly the failure of the hostage rescue operation didn’t increase my pride in America.
Throughout the entire Reagan Administration, I was not particularly proud of America. Not proud of the way we cut services to the poor, but dumped countless billions into the military machine. (a 400 ship Navy??? for what?) I was not proud of the way we made such a big deal about “horror of horrors” communism in Central America, so much so that our Government broke the law, and then brazenly negotiated with our enemy, Iran, to sell them rockets. I was not proud of the way Reagan appealed to so many people by convincing them that the Government is the problem, not the solution. (Try telling that to W. who has jacked up federal spending at a record pace.) I was not proud of the assault that Reagan took on the environment and his gutting of valuable regulation. For just but one example, his upending banking regulation laid the foundation for the savings and loan meltdown.
I was not particularly proud to be an American during the 1988 contest, when Bush ran the Willie Horton ad. It was despicable.
While I was proud (but not very proud) of America’s role in the Gulf War, I was not proud that this monster was in part our making. I was not proud that we sent Rumsfeld to Iraq to help with sales of chemical equipment that would be later used to create WMDs to use against the Iranians and the Kurds.
I was not particularly proud of America when the right wing turned on George H.W. Bush, smearing him for a modest tax raise in return for a spending reduction.
Although I was fairly proud of America when it elected Bill Clinton, I recognized that if it had not been for Ross Perot, he probably never would have won. This pride was short lived. I was not proud of America when the right wing smear machine torpedoed health care, and then went on to launch a 16 year smear campaign against the Clintons.
And yes, I was ashamed of America during impeachment. That was truly a cringe inducing experience.
I was not proud of America in 2000. Not proud of the way that racism was used in South Carolina against McCain. Not proud of the incessant lies that were spread about Al Gore. And ashamed of both the right wing mobs preventing a Florida recount and the Supreme Court’s outrageous ruling.
And during the Bush administration, what is there to say. I am deeply ashamed of torture, of rendition, of the trashing of the constitution, of the hundreds of thousands dead in Iraq, of the millions displaced, of the stacking of the courts with right wing zealots, of the politicization of the government, of the complete and utter incompetence in all areas of governing, and on and on and on and on. I am not proud.
When I think of how we are trashing the planet, coming close the point of no return, and how this administration has fought any and all global warming initiatives, I am not particularly proud to be an American, knowing that our delay will likely cause more problems for those most vulnerable, and has taken away our moral authority to lead the world away from the impending crisis.
When I think of our incompetent media, and the influence that lobbyists have over our government (Cheney’s energy task force, Rockefeller’s telecom amnesty) I am not particularly proud of America. Not at all.
And when I think about the apathy of voters, and how the right wing has convinced so many to vote against their own self-interest, by instilling fear, or smearing gays, I am not particularly proud.
But as I have seen a renewed interest of voters to try to change the way our country is run, I have begun to feel a renewed pride. I see all over, young and old, men and women, black and white, flocking to hear a candidate who wants to fix health care, address global warming, stop the madness in Iraq, repair America’s image in the world, return to our constitutional foundations, give more needy Americans the helping hand they need,
Well, now there’s some real reason for pride.
Barack’s message is something not heard in years. He’s not saying vote for him and he’ll get the job done. He’s saying vote for him and we can get the job done. It doesn’t end with the vote. The vote is but the beginning.
Barack started out as a community organizer. He brings that experience, that credibility along with him. He’s developing a gigantic following of people willing to do something. His success is a testament to that. He has attracted hoards of volunteers, willing to call, knock on doors, get people to the polls, people motivated to do something for change.
They all know that our time is arrived. This fall, we will sweep this administration into the dustbins of history, and we will win in a landslide. Not only can Barack take all the blue states, he can take the swing states, and yes, even some of the red states. Every day the right wing continues trashing McCain, they convince their base to do nothing but stay home on election day. McCain, a modern day McGovern. Now that’s goodness.
But our win won’t stop with the Presidency. We will probably take another 15 to 20 house seats. (There are already 27-28 (
rats) republicans who are fleeing this sinking ship.) And we just may take 6 or 7 Senate seats as well. But the goodness doesn’t stop there. We will probably take more governorships and even more state houses, building on the great success we had here in 2006.Yep. Now’s the time for some good old fashioned pride. Pride that America is emerging from a dark chapter, pride that we can wrest control of our country back from those who have done so much to damage to it. Pride that we will replace a bumbling dunce with a great orator, and yes, pride that we will make history and elect this great man of mixed race to our highest office.
Yea, you can say for the first time, I am very proud to be an American.
Go Barack, Go Michelle.
John Amato @ 72:
Most of these arm troubles are chiropractic problems (so-called 'thoracic outlet syndrome). My sister had very bad carpal tunnel (she's a hand therapist, no less), and the doctors uniformly recommended surgery.
She went to a good chiropractor who adjusted her upper back, and the problem in her hands disappeared like magic.
Numbness can be thought of like a dry riverbed. Your problem is likely upriver, at the dam. Acupuncture can probably resolve some of that, but chiropractic is the modality of first choice.
Those wishing to knock all alternative medicine will find their healthcare costs continuing to fly through the roof. Both acupuncture and chiropractic have been proven cheaper in the California experiment, which is why many insurance companies offer those modalities.
Which is not to say that all their theories are somehow true, unlike with modern medicine, eh?
John Amato @ 11:
Whatever works for you, John ! I am not an acupuncture follower, but, some of my friends swear by it. Apparently it works where nothing else would.
As to fortune telling - how about having it done by the real Gypsies, in Granada's Alhambra/ Generalife ? They hang around the place, hard to get rid of them - mine told me strange things, many years ago, which mostly checked out by now.. few more still to be fullfilled .. WEIRD ! I've never seen that Gypsy woman before, or, after. Nobody else ever read my palms.
You'd have a great excuse to visit E! Viva Espana !, fabulous Andalucia, and enchanting Granada w/Alhambra. Generalife Gardens are another testimony to the fantastic Moorish civilization and El-Andalus !! April is still not too hot in Spain, and the prices still much lower than the top-season - don't leave your wife/GF behind, romance rules !!
Spain became a very interesting country/nation w/all the changes from Franco's crypt keepers (I've seen his El Valle de Los Caidos at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, being prepared for his corpse), to a democratic, modern state, with exuberant youth taking charge.
In El Escorial library nearby (XVth C. royal palace/compound) you can see the ORIGINAL maps from Columbus/Amerigo Vespucci era, with first evah cartographic clumsy images of the Americas.
I wish a year from now we'll also get rid of the crypt keepers and weeping liars w/baggage bigger than Paris Hilton's on vacation. We'll be prodding the new prez to deliver on his part of the change, that we'll have to join in. It won't be rosy, but better than what we have now. Propaganda (not only repigs', shillary's as bad, or worse..) became more vicious than in the fmr Soviet Union..
Who on Earth would seriously listen to this Uncle-Tom-larry-waste ??! Who is paying him, anyway ???
Patrick,
I read your post out loud to my husband and we both got a little choked up. Well done.
John Amato @ 72:
Good point. Wonder if it would help with the numbness in my legs.

Acupuncture? Really? If you wanted a placebo buy some sugar pills. Their cheaper and less time consuming.
Abbybwood @ 89:
I was proud of America after watching "The War" by Ken Burns---the collective sacrifices we made for a redemptive cause should never be forgotten. And let us not forget how we rebuilt a shattered Europe with the Marshall Plan.
I was proud that John Kennedy committed us to the Peace Corps and putting a man on the moon. The space program was one of the greatest things America did in recent history. It was truly representative of our can-do spirit. If we put our minds to it--we could do anything.
Today, our political system is in cynical disarray and the reputation of America is severely compromised because of self centered fools who tore down what other centered people tried to build. They compromised the service mission of our political systems with a message that our government was little more than a means to a self centered, narrow minded end. Despite what these charlatans have done, I will never adopt the cynic's vision that all is lost, rather I will work to rebuild what has been lost.
Change will not come in a fortnight, rather it will be a slow, difficult process. The people that are satisfied with the self-centered status quo will be difficult opponents. We must commit to building a better world irregardless of the difficulty or sacrifice, for it will be the foundation of the legacy we leave to future generations.
Clayton @ 98:
No, sugar pills are homeopathy, another effective modality that the medical hegemonists in the U.S. love to falsely attack.
It will, however, not help with your spelling problems.
Paul in LA @ 100:
Actually, not true anymore, Paul. http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN0323176620080103
Well, wait, it might. But then again, so might placebo.
After all, a great number of the drug prescriptions in the US --ARE-- placebo. And not the cheap sugar ones.
How come you don't know that?
Every dose of antibiotics given to cold sufferers IS placebo. How come the AMA has been so slow in stopping that obviously perilous misuse of drugs?
The sugar pills might not work, but, unlike the unwise prescription of antibiotics for colds, they won't establish dangerous weaknesses in your immune system.
Paul in LA @ 100:
Good ol Fucking Paul in LA telling us all how to think and feel . You sir,are a boor and a bore. Take a fucking vacation out of That smog infested desert and get some humanity. This won't be the last time I comment on your self-serving drivel.
David Hawes @ 104:
That's a comment? It has zero to do with what I wrote, and is only due to your displeasure at being accurately labeled a defeatist.
Self-serving drivel is exactly what that defeatism is. Go sell hopelessness somewhere else.

What Elder didn't say, is how proud he is of Amerika, the land to Emit Till, Clarance Thomas, the Jena 6, Katrina, Stan Tookie Williams, etc.
Mike @ 4:
The word that has been edited out is "really" before "proud"--this edit significantly changes the impact and import of he statement. To his credit, O'Reilly pointed out the correct version on his radio show today. He still criticized her...
Sorry, acupuncture is ineffective. And the "thousands of years" is just an argument from antiquity. Give me antibiotics over bloodletting any day!
I spent the summer of 2004 in Greece... I remember the sea, the food, the history, the culture, the music, the weekend long festivals, the all night clubs, the WOMEN... and I remember thinking... Americans have no idea what quality of life really means.
Paul in LA @ 100:
Because our science-based medical system has problems doesn't mean you should turn to remedies that are based on unlikely ideas and do not invite analysis of their results. That's what homeopathy is.
Larry Elder want to be white so bad,he'l say anything or do anything to satisfy his masters. He's a disgrace to any respectable African American. He's actualy worst than Oleily.I hate This Nazi inbred fucking bastard.I hope he rots in hell.
Ummm, John, side note: You know that acupuncture is psuedo-medical crap, right?
This is pretty gloomy dude, you should move.
BTW;
I was proud when Reagan ended the Cold War and the Berlin Wall came down.
When our young men beat the Soviets in hockey, 1980 Olympics.
When Bush 41 saved Kuwait.

rduke @ 22:
Anecdotes don't prove anything.
I have multiple sclerosis, a disease which causes numbness all over my body at different times. I've had it for 15 years. If I treated it by going to a chiropractor, I would not be on a drug which was clinically tested and shown to reduct exacerbations by 30% in the treated population. If you have numbness in your body, I think you should go to a science-based medical practitioner and rule out serious diseases first, then if you like, you can go to a person who believes in dubious ideas cooked up years ago and never rigorously tested for efficacy or harm. Because that's what acupuncture and chiropractic are.
Paul in LA @ 91:

andrew @ 108:
Actually, that's not true and the story you linked to on DKOS has been removed. There are two clips. The first one was without the word "really". After she was criticized, the word "really" was added to a later speech. See comment #80 above to see the link to BOTH versions of her speech.
Paul in LA @ 100:
*They are, sorry
I find nothing wrong with using placebos (they can help up 1/2 of patients, depending on the problem), but acupuncture and homeopathy are about as scientifically proven as Feng Shui and fortune telling at their ability to do anything beyond provide a placebo. I'm just saying, their are cheaper methods available (and scientifically proven treatments for what I'm assuming is some sort of chronic pain).
rb @ 114:
How did Reagan end the Cold War? What exactly did his administration do to end the Cold War? I want specifics.
Bush 41 Killed 250,000 Iraqis and further turned the mideast against this country. Is this the same Kuwait who would not allow our troops to carry bibles, or which would not allow women to vote? How was that good?
So you care about AIDS, huh? Why didn't the US intervene in Darfur?
Ah, jerks in rose colored glasses. Ya gotta love these ignorant clowns who have so little to believe in that they resort to believing in more myth than reality. So Reagan won the Cold War, huh?
rb @ 116:
So rightwing talk radio is all about truth and civility, huh? How selective of righties to attempt to call a spade a spade when a Liberal or Progressive is involved, but any outrageous thing the Limbaughs, O'Reillys, and Coulters of the world have to say is fair game. This is why the RBs on this and other sites are simply irrelevant. It's called DENIAL.
Clayton @ 120:
Your info on the lack of efficacy of acupuncture comes from which accredited source(s)? Just curious, since those rubes at the Mayo Clinic seem to think it's appropriate treatment beyond the placebo range.
You'll have to let them know they're jackasses for thinking so.

Acupuncture?!! Oh No! Please tell me you’re joking!
Dude… you just went down a notch or two in the credibility stakes.
Acupuncture slots in comfortably right between Ouija boards and Phrenology!
In the future… please apply the same razor sharp intellect to your healthcare that you do to politics.
I’m just sayin’…
LISTEN UP DOUBTERS/HATERS.....fact is, accupuncture has been a part of eastern medical history for over 3,000 years and has remained fairly consistent in it's application on the body. Western medicine on the other hand has changed approaches so often it hardly has a consistent record to base success on (i.e. past beliefs include the use of leaches, belief that the body is made of "humors" like bile, phlegm, blood and that the devil is in the body when it is sick...not to mention the constant shifting technologies)
Anyone who dismisses accupunture, a part of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) outright is doing so having done absolutely zero credible research.....PERIOD! The primary reason the west can't grasp TCM is because the foundation and concepts on which TCM is based are about as far removed from western medicine as you can get. They're like oil and water yet TCM's proven effectiveness in study after study as well as it's longevity are a testament to it's value as a healing modality.
Soooo....instead of defending an ignorant position, read a book like "The Web that has no Weaver" by Ted Kaptchuk and maybe you'll begin to grasp Accupuncture and TCM and expand your beliefs about health and the body. Just sayin'.....
Cay Borduin @ 115:
My acupuncture story ...
A few years ago in the midst of seeing physical therapists, conventional doctors, specialists, chiropractors, etc., I finally gave in and tried an acupuncturist. I was at my wits end as to what to do as the hip pain and groin pain I had was just too much to bear as not only did it have me on my back for any of my spare time, but I couldn't sleep due to it. Anyway, I finally went to see this doctor and during her initial questioning phase in her office, she had me stand up whereby she ran both of her hands a couple of inches over my left hip region where the injury was. In broken English she murmured, "This was over a woman ..."
To make a long story short, my coverage for acupuncture was dropped by my health plan right after that, so I never got to see if long term acupuncture treatment would have made a difference, but what still astounds me about the whole experience was her comment about this injury being over a woman. It was true, and my question is how could she possibly have known that??? I had not told her anything. Right after my fall out with my woman friend, I started working out -- without warming up -- in order to take my mind off her. One thing I would do right after I arrived from work would be to run to the nearby university and run the stairs (seats in my case thus causing the injury) at the old stadium. The break-up with this woman was much much harder on me than I ever would have ever anticipated, so working out was solely to take my mind off her, which it did, until the injury hit.
...How did she know my injury had come about because of a woman, and state it with such certainty?
Larry Elder is pathetic. He spends most of his venom on blacks, explaining why all those stereotypes that his listeners cling to are *correct*. That's why they've got him on that right wing radio station-- to promote anti-black racism. I guess a black wingnut he can get away with promoting racism better than a white one can.
He's sickening.
LA’s wingnut radio station.
Which one?
Acupuncture works. If you've ever had sciatica (shooting pain from your butt to your foot) and haven't been able to find drugs strong enough to help you, you know what I'm talking about.
It's too bad that conventional medicine can't work together with oriental medicine for the good of the patient. Egos and money. Sounds just like our government.
Cay Borduin @ 111:
That's an entirely inaccurate representation of homeopathic medicine. Homeopathy is scientifically-based, and when Sam Hahnemann was fighting the conventional blood-letters and the quacks who bled George Washington to death, there was not much scientific basis in conventional medicine.
Things have improved. Now we know that nearly infinitesimal exposures to noxious materials like pollen can cause millions to suffer (and make conventional drug peddlars billions). Whole legions of allergenists bilk the public offering dangerous drugs, to treat these infinitesimal irritants. And yet the same doctors refuse to posit the existence of infinitesimal influence, and call that 'science.' You don't even know that the weeds are blowing this week, but if they are, you'll make money on your folk remedies.
Bluestater @ 126:
Her intuition is non-medical. The practice of Chinese medicine has been disrupted by folk remedies and folk mysticism throughout its history.
The scientific fact of acupuncture healing suggests that a considerable portion of the benefit would follow ANY placement of needles in the body. This has indeed been done in clinical studies, and the results are not comparable to logical therapy. But they are still there. ANY needles will help most pain conditions, according to those studies. The right needles produce better results -- even if some drug-peddling bigots think they shouldn't.
A certain percentage of people can be healed from, let's say, a chronic pain syndrome, at a fairly low cost, and without damage to the kidneys and liver from various analgesics. The cry of quackery must fall on the drug-doctors who pump the elderly with pain medicine and take no responsibility for the deterioration of function that causes.
It looks like the good people of Wisconsin are thinking like most smart Americans and are just totally discounting this right wing media and how sweet it is.
All of the negative media coverage they slung at the Obama’s just did not sit well with the good people.
I would be re-mist if I did not mention the very stupid and negative bash they slung at Michell Obama, because she made the statement that for the first time in her life, she felt proud of America. Because she has been blessed, means nothing to the fact that she cares about others that are suffering. The pain to people like her is just as great and God bless her for having those feelings.
It is so clear to me that the way some Whites in this country think is so off the chain from the Black perspective it is unreal but at the rate we are now traveling, I too can say there is hope and that hope can be found in such a man like Barack Obama.
Just an example of what I mean is just take the situation of all of those black women piled up on roof tops in New Orleans, with a President, his Administration and National Media who could care less of what happened to them and their families.
All you need to do is just ask yourself if you would hold any kind of great love for the kind of country that would allow this to happen?. I think not.
And just think that is just one of millions of examples of what blacks in this country have been through, that would make us question love and respect for this country.
As a black woman living in this country, I too am so very proud to see the drift this country is now taking, where the overwhelming majority of white Americans are finely taking a stand and shouting to the world that the images of what happened in Louisiana and the criminal mess that was started in Iraq , and so many of the vile and disgusting things in all of our names, that have been done to Innocent people is not who we are and that it is time this message is sent loud and clear not just to the victims in this country, but to the world.
And I might add that Senator McCain’s wife Cindy who usually stands next to him like a zombie, most likely does have great love for this country. She is an example of the kind of American that has every reason to have a positive view of this country and more power to her.
I just think she needs to spend some time in the shoes of others, especially those that have been the victims of some of her husbands Politics and voting policies. She too would have a very different view of life as an American.
Peace

And if you think MR HOPE is not being handeled by his PR people just chekc out David Axilrod also know as the Democratic Rove. Michele OBam is an angry woman who wants it her way or no way. THe fact that she would not state that if Hillary was to win the nomination she would voter for her her words were I would have to think about it tells me everything I need to know about her. So unlike Michele I will state uequvically I will not vote Obama.

And why does the very capable MO have to send out their PR guy Axilrod to expalin the very competent womans words......Why doesn't MO come out and just explain what she meant!

Clarence Thomas, J.C. Watts, etc, etc....

Patrick Bradish @ 90:
Patrick – Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts. You are correct in pointing out the many reasons that any intelligent free-thinking being might NOT be proud of America. Those who promote blind loyalty under the guise of “patriotism” are fools.
The hysteria over Michelle’s comments is a perfect example of how the MSM can make something out of nothing – then convince a large segment of the audience that their interpretation of what someone said is actually the message that was being expressed. In just a few short hours we see dozens of posters in this thread echoing lies and talking as if they have some sort of mind-reading capabilities that allow them to say what was in Michelle’s heart. Sadly, these lies and misrepresentations are now destined to be repeated again and again throughout the campaign.
GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT PEOPLE:
Michelle’s comments were meant to express her feelings over a lifespan. If you have always unconditionally been proud of anyone you know throughout their lifetime, you are either talking as a parent or child, or are terribly naive – There are NO individuals or circumstances in life that warrant a full and total unequivocal approval and support 100% of the time. She never said she was NOT proud of her country – just that she was “REALLY proud” now for the first time in her adult life. READ or LISTEN to what she said – not what some pundit wants to make of what she said.
Michelle made it clear that she was NOT making the comment just because her husband has reached this position, yet posters in this thread are already perpetuating that lie. Michelle explained that she is boasting with pride because of the position the nation is in as a result of her husband and the movement that his campaign has spawned. BIG DIFFERENCE.
The sad part is that when you have TWO campaigns nitpicking you and your supporter’s every word like Obama has right now, the time expended to defend yourself HAS to take away from the precious time available to get your message out regarding the REAL issues and concerns of the voters. This is the real sin of negative attacks used during campaigning in American politics.
Rush Limbaugh is proud of Larry Elder
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2006/08/hitchens200608
Proud of this?
Larry Elder has made a career out of saying the things that make the most vile ignorant racist smile with approval. Like Colin, Clarence, and Condi, this sorry professional bootlicking social climber lies to himself and to the bigots. Us black folk see right through this loser. If I were a white person, I would never trust phony black people like Elder (remember double murderer O.J. Simpson profited greatly from white society pretending to be a "happy" negro).
He is nothing but another very low rated, multiple bar flunking and washed out Reslug lawyer that doesn't know the meaning of law.
Patrick Bradish Says:
Wow, too many folks here drinking the cool aid again. Michelle spoke for many, many of us.
Patrick, I'm 52 and I agree. Not alot to be proud of . I guess it depends what ones standards are. Maybe mine are a bit higher than the jingoists. As a post at the top said, a little humility after all the harm we have caused, especially in the last 25 years, would be a good thing to have if one sees themselves as a thinking person and not a knee jerk reactionary.
I. am proud that we have a constitution for rich white people only. I am proud that we wiped out the American Indian. I am proud we burnt witches ans lynched black men.I am proud of slavery and the abuse of the working man. I am proud of the h-bomb that killed so many in Japan I am proud proud of ENRONS manipulation of enrgy prices. I am proud that no ENRON executive did time. I am proud that we can keep oil prices to a leval that the rich white boys can afford. I am proud that RED NECK is a badge of honor and NIGGER, SPICK, WET BACK, JEW BOY, POLLACK, MICK and DEGO are only mentioned in whispers by rich white americans. I AM SO PROUD OF THE NEO-CONS. Thank Gawd {the white mans God} I am an american.
right wing hater @ 136:
Yep, exactly. They preach for one day about King, then practice the exact opposite.
What would MLK do? Not vote for them, or listen to their programs.
Actually, Larry, Michelle Obama said she's "REALLY proud..."
Soooo.... saying that for the first time in her adult life, she's "REALLY proud" automatically presumes she was NOT at all proud before?? Can we assume she was simply "proud" before and is now "REALLY proud"?
Please, can we move on to something important?
Albeit a pretty small wanker in MM's world.
http://mediamatters.org/issues_topics/tags/larry_elder
Homeopathy is not scientifically based. It 's an 18th century idea that is laughable on its face and it doesn't hold up in clinical trials. You've almost got the point, but I'd modify it a bit: when Hahnemann was alive there was not much scientific basis in any medicine, including his. Conventional medicine no longer practices bloodletting since it was proven not to help, but to harm. Why do you continue to practice homeopathy when it has been proven not to help?
Paul in LA @ 130:
I actually looked up the speech and listened to it here, it is an inspiring speech
http://www.c-span.org/video_rss.aspx?MediaID=34947

Larry Elder is a Wanker?
DUH!
How long did it take you to figure that out?
As long as it will take you to figure out that a chiropractor is a massage therapist who has managed to put one over on the insurance industry to pay the tab?
duh.
I too was listening to the right-wing talk shows on my way home last night and what I heard was the same talking points. Channel after channel. It was as if a mass e-mail went out telling them to talk it up. They all, of course, sounded absurd as they tried to make something out of nothing. They are in such a sad state.
