Bernie Goldberg has a theory about why there's been a significant controversy over Lou Dobbs' promotion of the "Birther" conspiracy theory: It's all an evil plot by the Obama White House to string the story along indefinitely so as to make his right-wing opposition look like a nuttier bunch than a PayDay bar.
Goldberg: Well, let's get the easy part out of the way first. CNN should not, repeat, not fire Lou Dobbs for talking about this. Lou Dobbs didn't say Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States, he said just the opposite! He said he was born in the United States. But then he said he should produce his birth certificate.
Now let's think about this for a second. Why wouldn't President Obama release his birth certificate? He was born in Hawaii, Hawaii last I checked is in the United States, and -- why in the world wouldn't he release his birth certificate?
O'Reilly: Can I answer that question?
Goldberg: Well, let me answer it first. OK? Let me just answer my own question first.
O'Reilly: OK, you answer it, and then I'll have the correct answer.
Goldberg: I have a theory. And the theory is this: That the Chicago Mafia inside the White House want to keep this crazy controversy going. Because the longer it goes, the better the chance that they will conflate the crazy right-wing fringe with regular conservatives and regular Republicans.
O'Reilly: That's not a bad theory. But from dealing with the Obama White House, now, for almost, more than a year, I will tell you they are, uh, as every White House I've ever experienced, they're arrogant, they're arrogant. And they're saying to themselves, 'We're not gonna let Lou Dobbs tell us what to do. We're not gonna let these cranks on talk radio tell us what to do. They want the birth certificate released? Tough. We're not going to do it, because we have the power, and we don't like that.' That's what it's all about -- it's a 'Ha ha, we're not gonna do what you say.'
Interesting theories, gentlemen. Unfortunately, they both tend to run aground on a simple fact: Obama actually released his birth certificate in June 2008. It reads, "Certification of Live Birth."
Now, as FactCheck.org's definitive piece on the certificate issue explains, this is in fact the "short form" of Obama's birth certificate, not its long form, which is filled out by the hospital and kept in its records. So why doesn't Obama release the long form? Because Hawaiian law doesn't give him that option:
The document is a "certification of birth," also known as a short-form birth certificate. The long form is drawn up by the hospital and includes additional information such as birth weight and parents' hometowns. The short form is printed by the state and draws from a database with fewer details. The Hawaii Department of Health's birth record request form does not give the option to request a photocopy of your long-form birth certificate, but their short form has enough information to be acceptable to the State Department. We tried to ask the Hawaii DOH why they only offer the short form, among other questions, but they have not given a response.
Now, if Goldberg and O'Reilly are so concerned that the public might conclude that mainstream conservatives are prone to far-right conspiracy theories and various other forms of wingnuttery, they might look in the mirror. It's the virtual definition of wingnuttery to even be asking why Obama won't release his birth certificate when he has in fact done so.
There's no Obama conspiracy keeping this garbage alive and tying it around the necks of mainstream conservatives. They're doing a very fine job of that themselves.

The short form certification issued by the State of Hawaii is according to a few phone calls, I just made, adequate proof of natural born citizenship for (among other purposes):
Enlisting in any of the Armed Forces of the United States
Applying for student aid
Applying for any financial or "in kind aid" in those states requiring proof of citizenship.
Obtaining a Confidential Clearance, a Secret Clearance, a Top Secret Clearance, or any of the higher higher security clearances up to and including SCI (beyond that, I don't have the contacts to check.
Proving Citizenship for a driver's license in all states having that requirement.
Applying for employment with and Federal agency, and the dozen civilian corporations I just finished asking.
Jason, it's real simple. Each of the several states decides the format, composition, release criteria, etc., of their birth certification of a person born within that state. All the other states, and the federal government are bound by a considerable body of laws to accept that.
For example, the State of Oregon requires a certificate "with raised seal" for various purposes, since that's what we get. My certificate, coming from New Hampshire, does not have a raised seal, because they decided not to put one on. Does that invalidate any dealings I have with Oregon? Nope. It is a legal certificate under the laws of the state where it was issued.
As a Liberal and card-carrying member of the ACLU, I am amazed I have to point this out to a Conservative, but it comes under the "States Rights" provision. Just like banking requirements, insurance requirements, and a whole bunch of other stuff, if it happens within the borders of a state, the state gets to make the rules.
So let's hear it for the States having all powers not specifically assigned to the Federal Government!!!!!

Bush released records to prove his point but only in a private room for selected journalists, no photos or notes, now those records are sealed again.
Dan Rather had been trying to dig up dirt on Bush for years before that fake story came out. He wanted it to be true so bad he risked his own career to put it on the air. That more than anything else gives me cause to feel angry at Sarah Palin. She stocks Alaska's government departments that relate to wildlife with mostly hunters. Even though voters in Alaska have twice voted against aerial wolf hunting, she placed it on the ballot a third time so she could get her way. Killing wolves, so that more trophy hunters can kill a moose to mount on their wall is senseless. While it's true that some people like moose meat, I find it tastes horrible, and soon after causes you to make a quick trip to the restroom. People like Palin who claim to be Christians see the whole Earth, and every living creature on it as theirs to destroy in order to make money. They don't see themselves as gentle caretakers of the beauty, and wonder that God made. (That wasn't a blanketed comment about all Christians btw, only about the Dominionists.)
For me wolves are a special animal that I love with all of my heart. They are not only beautiful, they also represent freedom, and part of the balance in nature. Balance, beauty, freedom, and nature are words that Palin doesn't truly understand.
The problem is the hunters take the meese and cariboose with the biggest racks, while the wolves take the sick and the weak.
Taking out the strongest animals so they can't breed while simultaneously taking out the dudes that are culling the weak and sick is a real good way to ensure weaker herds, increased winter kill and declining populations. They are destroying the herds while blaming the herd destruction on the animals they shoot from helicopters, thus justifying their destruction of the herds.

... records can be converted into electronic form as:
- data entered into a database, in which case birthers claim the data is erroneous and still not to be believed.
- actual documents are converted to microfiche or scanned, in which case the birthers claim it's still not the original.
Of course Hawaii would lie about Obama being born there, this makes them a first class state!

I'm not a citizen either, despite being born in the United States, because my maternal grandfather was not a U.S. citizen, therefore my mother isn't actually a U.S. citizen.

My friend's father is a diplomat. Her mom is a US citizen. She and her brother were born in the States. Since their mom was a US citizen, THEY are US citizens, with no paperwork or anything.
Not so with my friend's half siblings, whose mother is a national of another country. All the kids from the second marriage were born in the US, raised here, this is their home, but, at the age of 18 they have to apply for residency, or face deportation.
I think the citizenship bullshit needs to be put to rest. Who gives a rat's ass where an accident of birth occurred? It is not in the power of the person to choose his or her location of birth, nor the citizenship of one's parents.

I always believed, maybe I'm delusional (don't answer that), that if you are born in another country, let's say Kenya for argument's sake, and one of your parents is a US citizen, you are considered to have dual citizenship. Does that disallow someone from being elected president? Must you be born on US soil? Fucking McCain was born in a foreign land, in a portion of a country that had been seized from its rightful owners. Why was he eligible?

Thanks for that. I had a close friend with whom I once traveled around Europe. He was a dual citizen of both the US and Switzerland. He carried a US passport. At some level, they must recognize that duality. (He wasn't presidential material anyway.)

1) attempt to create a scam or scandal to bring down Obama and his agenda for the American people and for bringing this country back on track.
2) when the manufactured scam or scandal fails and backfires making them look like the petty childish idiot asshat clown fucks they are, blame it on the Obama White House for making them looking like asshat fucks.
3) repeat 1) and 2) for the next 3 1/2 years till the 2012 election all the while proclaiming your patriotism and love of America, country be damned.
Even if all these dumb-ass 'scandals' (like the Special Olympics hoax, and the Ogling in Paris hoax) get shot down eventually, it will still create an effect fostering in people's minds of "Where's there's smoke there's fire".
There are a LOT of people who are low-information voters in this country who just graze news stories, and don't ever make an effort to probe deeper than a quick skim of this or that.
It's like middle school, where someone is just plagued with rumors. Even if ever one of them doesn't turn out to be anything other than garbage, people who don't know them and just are aware of them based off their reputation eventually start thinking 'Even if none of this stuff is turning out to be true, WHAT is driving all this?'
And, as an added bonus, while they're thinking about that, they're not thinking about what's driving the GOP to block health reform at all costs, block energy reform, etc.

a good way for the president to handle the situation. What he should do is offer, for a moderate fee, a state certified copy of his certificate of live birth for every single person who requests it. Plus shipping and handling of course. Use it as a fundraiser with the proceeds to go to charity. It would be a nice way to make a laughingstock of the GOP/birther crowd.
