Correction: I misheard O'Reilly on this: He said "blackboard," not "black boy." My apologies. The text has been edited to reflect this.

Bill O'Reilly has been irked at Joe Klein since last October, after Klein wrote a typical Villager piece for Time castigating President Obama for standing up to Fox News. That's not what upset O'Reilly, though. Rather, it was these lines:

Let me be precise here: Fox News peddles a fair amount of hateful crap. Some of it borders on sedition. Much of it is flat out untrue.

So last night on Fox, O'Reilly finally got his chance to pin Klein down for this, and found he had his hands full defending Glenn Beck:

Klein: I have worked with an awful lot of Fox journalists, the ones who actually bring you the news, like Carl Cameron and Major Garrett.

O'Reilly: And those people are good guys, right?

Klein: Those -- those are good guys, I think you're a good guy, we come from the same neck of the woods.

But I think that your pal Glenn Beck is peddling a lot of hateful crap.

O'Reilly: But he's funny! He's doing it in a funny way! What's hateful about it?

Klein: Oh, he's doing a hilarious -- I thought the part where he describes the president as intentionally steering the airplane of state into the ground was hilarious. And the stuff about Obama not being an American citizen? That was hysterical!

O'Reilly: He's got a blackboard out there, he's got a phone to the White House -- look, he is everyman sitting on a barstool. Why shouldn't everyman have a show?

Klein: No, no, he is Father Coughlin trying to delude and entertain the American people.

O'Reilly: That's such baloney. That's the left-wing line, that this guy is a threat to the union. If anybody thinks Glenn Beck is a threat to the union, they're insane!

Actually, the comparison to Father Coughlin is more than appropriate -- it fits like a glove.

And dontcha just love how Beck being "funny" means he isn't hateful? I understand Theodore Bilbo was quite the crackup too.

O'Reilly isn't one of the 'good guys', either. Dont suck up to him, Joe.

Ailes ---therefore he has bought the crap spewed by the likes of Becki...forgetting that sadists are not anymore funny than the horrid men who used human skin to cover their wallet...Just ed deplorable and deprived---couch in perverted lying humour...Despicable!

his new female counterpart is in the same IQ level --below 70 but thinks they a cute none the less...My repub friends are embarrassed by all three and wonder how their party of Lincoln got hijacked!

Typical though how many suck up to this disgusting bully.
O'Reilly trying to palm Beck off as "funny" is a prime example of what a compulsive liar he is.That was beyond lame.

O'Reilly: But he's funny! He's doing it in a funny way!

Proof that O'Lielly is a sociopath. Glenn Beck is only funny in a "what a fucking lunatic" way, and even then, he's not funny...

When did that become a rule? I missed the change. Perhaps the anti-Christ is already here, and he or she is implementing Orwell's "1984" philosophy. If that is the best O'Reilly can do, time for him to retire.

Yeah, I guess sedition is hilarious if you say it with a smile on your lips and hate in your heart.

Does anybody here NOT want to hand Beck an anvil as he steps off a cliff?

says he doesn't have 3 hours to say what he doessn't like about Time. I don't like Time mostly because of Joe Klein but that's not everything I quit taking it.

Fox? I could say what I don't like about them in less than 3 seconds. Everything.

Samson-'s picture

amazing that someone as lick-spittlish (coin?) as joe klein can look fairly decent next to o'reilly

to be a dad because his wife had suffered a miscarriage a couple days earlier, he was just making funny for his morning zoo asshat listeners?

"A couple days after Kelly's wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, 'We hear you had a miscarriage,' " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce [Kelly] apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby."

Glenn Beck, always teh klassy, always teh funny.

From what Beck says lately, Joe must have written something about him in Time recently. Beck has had a bug up his ass about Klien for a while now. Beck does his usual bs about people like Klien not thinking Beck's viewers are smart enough to understand what is happening in the country.

I wish Klien had asked billo about his "black boy" comment. A good reporter would have. So if you see the president as a black boy and you have a phone while sitting on a bar stool, you are a typical American? No, you are most likely a tea baggin' flop.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

I'm not a fan of BO, but I think meant board not boy. It's still an interesting Freudian slip though.
The question Klein should have asked is if BO thought Keith Olbermann was "funny" when he attacked W on an almost nightly basis.

Yep, you're all correct. I've corrected it. Thanks! I replayed it several times and that was what I thought he said, but I was clearly mistaken.

The sad thing is none of us would have been surprised if he had said it.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

it was probably a slip-up that he DIDN'T say it

would have better diction, wouldn't you?

A Freudian slip-up that is.

If you order Billo's book right now he'll send you a shiny new pen for free. Who could resist that?

Next to Beck, Bill sounds almost sane at times. I wonder whose idea it was for the two of them to do the Bold Fresh shows together. Did Bill need Beck or was it the other way around?

Beck is funny in that Rush kind of way; when El Dumbass tells people to "call back after they take the bone out of their nose!"

Oh those wacky conservatives. What a sense of comedy they have (in a gustapo sort of way). Inciting hatred and violence in their moron listeners; aren't they just hilarious?

Then, he'll have to face the public at large.
For the most part, he'll be able to avoid it. But sooner or later, he'll find himself out in public. We don't forget.

Who gives one whit what Joe Klein says? That's like wondering what Howie Kurtz thinks about something - they are both part of the damn problem! He thinks Carl Cameron is a credible, unbiased journalist? I'll bet he thinks David Gregory asks probing questions with brilliant follow-ups, too.

Let him schmooze with O'Reilly. Looks like he's right at home...

The effect of all these voices is rarely direct or acute but rather cumulative. The effect on audiences of hearing this ever-more outrageous hatefulness repeated endlessly and in the guise of mainstream speech can be lasting and profound. But who, exactly, are the audience, who are the receivers of these transmissions?

Bill O'Reilley perpetuted the fact that he is a cruel, unprofessioinal and twisted propagandist. It was a disgrace the way he treated his "guest" Joe Klein, rude, crude and merciless in his attack and disrespect for the simple courtesy of letting someone else speak. I do so wish that someone would confront O'Reilley with the sexual harassment lawsuit which he paid his way out off and make him own up to his misdeeds the way he tries to force other people to answer to him. The things he said to these women are all on line and they defy description. To call them sick and perverse is an understatement. Why the creep O'Reilley is allowed to get away with his dirt is a miscarriage of justice and it's not too late to make him take responsibility for it, even rub it in his face like he tries to do to other people, even innocent ones.

O’Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh, etc. etc., they’re all freakin lying, evil garbage. The whole network is a terrorist mob. Evey one of them lie, distort, bully and spread hate, fear, and violence.

Starve the WAR Beast...

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

I've mentioned this before....I used to watch O'Reilly fairly often (guess I'm somewhat masochistic) but did so because I took great pleasure in sending multiple emails to the guy, pointing out how he is wrong. And, he has read a number of my emails on air over the years.

I have pretty much stopped watching O'Reilly, now that he has so long defended beck. At a White House Christmas correspondents dinner, Valerie Jarret asked O'Reilly, "what about this beck?" O'Reilly said, well, "he's just an American with strong views."

Damn it, BillO. Cindy Sheahan and Markos Moulitsos are "just Americans with strong views." Cindy in particular had a son who died in a war Bush sent him to.

So are the many tens if not hundreds of thousands or even millions of Progressive....they are "just Americans with strong views." But all of the latter are characterized by O'Reilly and his pals as the "liberal elite," the "far left loons," the "far left haters." O'Reilly has long said that the hate on the left is far greater than the hate shown by the right and in fact the hatred shown by the right has been "marginalized."

Yet O'Reilly still calls beck "just an American," the guy who sits on a bar stool. If beck is just the "everyman sitting on a barstool," the only way this can be true is if beck is still drinking and taking drugs.....but then he wouldn't be the "everyman."

Last night, I happened to turn on O'Reilly's show for a brief time. He was talking to his glum friend Bernie Goldberg (who never smiles). O'Reilly asked Goldberg if he didn't think that the far right commentators are "now" starting to "go over the top?" I had to ask O'Reilly, "Now???????" You mean, "Now???????" They've been over the top with Obama hating ever since Obama started running for higher office.

And, the thing is, even though BillO and Bernie patted themselves on the back for saying they were pointing out these right wingers were "over the top," they did not mention one single one of them (limpballs, hannity, beck, ingraham, various right wing senators, bachmann, etc.).....I repeat, they did not mention one single one of them by name or what they said to make O'Reilly and Goldberg think they were "over the top."

Lying SOSs of the Pox Network.

About ratings,
We have a lot of criminals doing time that would like to see more rape shows or murder shows. There are a lot of child molesters out there that could give FOX ratings if they ran child porn.

These are ratings of a subjective group and it excludes the rest of America. But that is OK unless you are going to tell me out of the FOX access to 8 million viewers that when FOX gets 2 million viewers watching something that it reflects America as a whole.
It tells me FOX is selectively targeting some of the most peculiar listeners at the same time it promotes otherwise.

Let me get this straight: O'Reilly doesn't refute the contention that Barstool Beck is peddling a lot of hateful crap... it's the idea that he's funny while doing it that makes it his saving grace?!
