It's been amusing watching Glenn Beck twist and squirm and try to explain what he meant last October when he proclaimed that President Obama was flying the American airplane right into the trees, "taking you to a place to be slaughtered."

After Arianna Huffington raised the matter with Fox Chief Roger Ailes this weekend -- and then explored it in some detail with Keith Olbermann -- Beck has been scurrying about coming up with a variety of shifting rationales for what he was saying.

First, he said, "I don't know if I've ever used the word 'slaughtered'." Then, upon discovering that he had indeed used it, still tried to claim he "had never used it on the air," but was only referring to SEIU's Andy Stern. Finally, he settled on the claim that he wasn't speaking "literally" about "slaughter," he was talking about, um, the economy! Yeah, that's the ticket!

That was the rationale he followed yesterday on his Fox News show, smirking and acting as though his rationale would reveal his critics for the fools they were. Of course, what you can really see is what a fool anyone who believes Glenn Beck is.

Here is what he actually said in October:

Beck: I told you yesterday, buckle up your seatbelt, America. Find the exit -- there's one here, here, and here. Find the exit closest to you and prepare for a crash landing. Because this plane is coming down, because the pilot is intentionally steering it into the trees!

Most likely, it'll happen sometime after Christmas. You're gonna see this economy come up -- we're already seeing it, and now it's gonna start coming back down again. And when you see the effects of what they're doing to the economy, remember these words: We will survive. No -- we'll do better than survive, we will thrive. As long as these people are not in control. They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered!

As Arianna noted in her response:

No, Beck contended again and again and again, the whole time he was just talking about "the economy." Barack Obama is going to slaughter the economy. Even though he clearly said "taking you" not "taking the economy."

So, to review the ever-changing explanations: Beck never used the word "slaughter" -- until it was proven that he did. Then he only used it in reference to Mao, Stalin, or Hitler -- until it was proven that this wasn't the case. Then, when he used it, he wasn't referring to the Obama administration, he was referring to Andy Stern. Then he was referring to Obama -- but didn't mean it literally.

Got it? You might need to use Beck's trademark chalkboard to keep track.

A little later in the show, Beck brought on Bill O'Reilly to chew over O'Reilly's segment of the night before in which Joe Klein castigated Beck for his "hateful crap," including "the part where he describes the president as intentionally steering the airplane of state into the ground." Yet Beck claimed Klein can't come up with any examples (and it's true that Klein's mention of the Birthers story was off; Beck has in fact never joined in on that conspiracy theory).

Somehow, the whole "the pilot is intentionally steering it into the trees" line doesn't matter because it was just a metaphor. Of course he didn't mean Obama was some kind of pilot, you silly liberals.

That, in essence, is his entire defense: Because these were simply metaphors to illustrate what Obama was doing to the economy, it shouldn't matter that he uses metaphors involving mass death.

Beck may think his audience is stupid, but the rest of us are dumb enough to fall for this. We understand metaphors and rhetoric at least as well as Beck does. The point Huffington raised, and Klein as well, was that this kind of rhetoric, employing violent metaphors, in fact has the effect of inspiring violent responses among its audiences.

People's economic well-being is nearly as vital to them and their families as their physical well-being. When you tell someone that the president is going to drown them economically, or crash the economic engine of the nation, or economically slaughter you, the reaction will be every bit as visceral and violent as if people were being told they were threatened physically.

Arianna made this point in her response:

The crux of the matter was never whether Glenn Beck really believes Barack Obama is planning to actually slaughter Americans. It's the damage being done by the inflammatory rhetoric and imagery he constantly uses. The evoking of "slaughter" and "killing sprees" and a president who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" is meant to play into the public's legitimate anxiety over the economy -- and fan the flames of fear.

Indeed, even the references to Mao and Stalin and Hitler engaging in genocide were not as untainted at Roger Ailes wanted to claim. Because those references all came in the context of a week's worth of Beck shows attacking the "progressive movement" as a "cancer" and a "virus" that was "sucking the lifeblood" out of the country, and culminating in a pseudo-documentary based on Jonah Goldberg's fraudulent work whose entire thrust was to connect the "progressive movement" as the underlying force behind all of the great genocides of the 20th century.

Moreover, Beck has consistently claimed that Obama is a totalitarian of whatever stripe fits that day's thesis -- a socialist, a communist, a fascist, a Maoist -- and made clear his belief that the current White House is run by "radicals" who intend to "fundamentally transform" America into a totalitarian state. The genocide documentary was unmistakably a component of this thesis.

Beck lying? Color me shocked!

These shameless hacks will say anything then deny it - even when it is on video.

It is no different than talking to a crazy person.

O'Reilly thinks Beck is funny because he's paid to think that Beck is funny. In reality he's prolly jealous as Cain was to Abel when it comes to Beck.

it's their bread and butter.

I need to install a weight bag in my garage to get out all the anger after watching Beck "perform". He knows exactly what he is doing when he drops dog whistle words out there. Then he tries to pretend his words weren't really intended to mean the things he said. Then he tries that "aw shucks" roll of the eyes and little chuckle when he and Bill'O hold hands and try to put a shine on the turd.

a very unpleasant time to be an American. Perhaps it is because as I approach middle age with a family and a mortgage and all that goes with that, I am more affected by things like this.

I am sickened by this violent rhetoric and I don't know how we got here. How have people like Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh gotten to where they are? I realize that everyone has opinions and the 1st Amendment guarantees them the right to express those opinions, but their behavior and the constant spewing of this kind of bile over the airwaves (and the people who buy into it) are so far removed from the USA that I was taught to respect that it has made my approach to middle age a very sad and depressing period.

I know I am not saying anything new that many, many people haven't said or felt before, but isn't it time that we rose up and put an end to this? There has to be a way or an argument to get around the monolith of 1st Amendment guarantees and put an end to this kind of speech or at least to greatly curtail it. Surely, the type of inciting that you hear from these nuts can be convincingly argued to be tantamount to yelling "FIRE" in a theater.

I like to blame the top 1%. They have enough money to support these jerks. I'm not just talking about top 1% income earners but also the big corporations who buy ads which supports the crazy.

To some extent big $$ can tell many people what they want and what they like. The sheeple are easy to herd.

..about what is said on a show only that lots and lots of people watch it. We saw a great exodus from beck when advertisers started boycotting his show. They need to do that to ALL of faux's shows, even the Simpson's. Simpson's would thrive anywhere. Oh yeah, Howie Long, Jimmy with the nice hair and the old bald lady can do well anywhere also.

Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"

..theater. bor did a real bang-up job yelling "Tiller the baby killer" causing scott roeder to go off. How many others who participated (embarassed themselves) at tea-bag parties using mis-spelled signs calling for the death of a politician and were inspired by beck and his ilk. But this is the greatest country in the world and we do allow "citizens" even anti-American ones like beck to spew but the problem is the people who listen, have to differentiate between truth and lies. We know what beck does; we have to convince more people that he is doing it.

This is bad for Fox News. Roger Ailes really messed up with his response to Arianna Huffington. The longer Fox is in the news defending Beck, the more likely some smug jerk like Ailes will put his foot in his mouth and expose the propaganda itself to the world. Now the story is about Ailes lying on real national TV. The beauty is that Fox is so arrogant they can't help themselves and will add more to fire rather than back down.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

He's like a manic depressive Bart Simpson. Definitely arrested emotional development.

Plus he's probably a bit upset that he is indeed the worst person in the world, just as he had realized to begin with before he started his public rants.

If someone were to shove that pointer down Beck's throat, do you think that would shut him up? Prolly not. Most of his comments come out of his ass, anyway.

BTW, I do mean that literally.

Did anyone else notice that when Arianne was trying to make her point about the Becky, that the Roger got a jab in there about her accent when he said that Becky was speaking english............

Possibly, or possibly that's all you can say on behalf of Beck's rants. Right Roger?, haha. English, yes. It's gibberish with a tangle of fear and loathing folded in. Paranoia ripple. As soon as they change their name from FOX News to "FOX Terror Theatre" I'll watch with glee, but not before. Hell, if they stopped pretending, Beck could sit back with his blackboard, take psychedelics and tell us what he really things.

Kinda like: "We never said that Saddam was responsible for 9/11."

And they're technically correct. They set it up that way. They deliberately never specifically said Saddam cause 9/11, but they did put 9/11 and Saddam Hussein in the same sentence as often as they could.

Same with Beck. He sets up his plausible identifiability beforehand. But his intentions are obvious.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

These people always reminds me of some of the guys I knew in high school, even when they got caught doing something by the teachers, they always denied that they were doing it.
Not only is Becky unaquainted with history or knowledge in general, but the idea of personal responsibility is compleatly lost on him.

Ailes himself said it was all about the "ratings". So in my opinion he doesn't give a flying fu*k what Beck says as long as Beck has good ratings. Ailes will never take responsibility for putting Beck on the air or for what Beck says as long as money rolls in to his company as a result.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

He is an entertainer. The more over the top he goes the more folks want to watch him. It is like watching an accident happen you dont want to look but cant look away. Folks want to see if he is actually going to explode on tv or have a heart attack due to his hate filled life. Will hate fill up his heart and shrink it too sizes too small and then he is rushed to the hosptial with hate induced pain. It is something we may see in the not too distant future. It happend to Rush, it may well happen to Beck.

bpaskin's picture

I personally do not care about his ratings nor those of the other stations. However, his rant that is ratings is 13x that of MSNBC does not mean he is telling the truth nor does it mean that he is rational. That argument is just plain BS.

As for his comment on the economy, he said that the Obama administration is purposely doing what it is doing and the economy will be destroyed. I don't recall him saying that when we went into the toilet with the last Administration.

We're not going to get very far if you keep injecting logic into the conversation!

"You're gonna see this economy come up -- we're already seeing it, and now it's gonna start coming back down again. "

Wrong. The GDP is way up, market is up, lower unemployment figures. Not only is Beck hiding behind his absurd contention that ratings are proof of him telling the truth, he is a lousy prognosticator.

As far as being an expert of history, why didn't he finish college, or even his freshman year for that matter.

For the last time Beck, your ratings are so high for two reasons. One being that the morons who repeat what you say get 95% of their information from about 2 sources, you and the other shit on your network. Therefor they watch A LOT OF TV. This is part of the problem in America. The second are actually people who disagree with everything you say, and tune in really to just laugh in disgust at what an absolute ass you make of yourself every night.

Damn! I keep forgetting. Everytime I see one of these Glenn Beck stories on the web they rope me in to wanna watch it and see what he's saying so I once again clicked on it to listen and about 12 seconds in to it I remember that I can't sit through a Glenn Beck clip that's longer than 30 seconds. My stomach immediately starts churning and I just feeling run down and sick inside. Maybe it has something to do with being spoken to as if I were 2 years old. Oh well, "fool me once...." . Enjoy Fox viewers. I guess it's providing you with something to watch in the evenings till Barney and Friend comes on in the morning. Yeccchhh!

The most trusted name in news. I trust them 100% of the time to tell wild lies. What makes me curious is how anyone can actually sit through a full episode of this guy. Even with the volume off he just creeps me out.
