Since all those isolated incidents involving terroristic violence directed at "liberals" and the "government" keep adding up into a serious trend, we've decided it's time to start keeping systematic track of the problem -- especially because mainstream media seem intent on refusing to recognize the trend.

Here's the text for the 20 23 24 events we've enumerated so far:

-- July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how "liberals" are "destroying America," walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.

-- October 2008: Two neo-Nazis are arrested in Tennessee in a plot to murder dozens of African-Americans, culminating in the assassination of President Obama.

-- December 2008: A pair of "Patriot" movement radicals -- the father-son team of Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted "to attack the political infrastructure" -- threaten a bank in Woodburn, Oregon, with a bomb in the hopes of extorting money that would end their financial difficulties, for which they blamed the government. Instead, the bomb goes off and kills two police officers. The men eventually are convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.

-- December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear "dirty bomb" in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.

-- January 2009: A white supremacist named Keith Luke embarks on a killing rampage in Brockton, Mass., raping and wounding a black woman and killing her sister, then killing a homeless man before being captured by police as he is en route to a Jewish community center.

-- February 2009: A Marine named Kody Brittingham is arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate President Obama. Brittingham also collected white-supremacist material.

-- February 2009: A 60-year-old former Republican Party campaign volunteer opens fire on a gathering of Chilena exchange students in an apartment complex in Miramar Beach, Fla., after telling a neighbor he wanted to start a "revolution" against Latino immigrants.

-- April 2009: A white supremacist named Richard Poplawski opens fire on three Pittsburgh police officers who come to his house on a domestic-violence call and kills all three, because he believed President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself. Poplawski is currently awaiting trial.

-- April 2009: Another gunman in Okaloosa County, Florida, similarly fearful of Obama's purported gun-grabbing plans, kills two deputies when they come to arrest him in a domestic-violence matter, then is killed himself in a shootout with police.

-- May 2009: A "sovereign citizen" named Scott Roeder walks into a church in Wichita, Kansas, and assassinates abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

-- June 2009: A Holocaust denier and right-wing tax protester named James Von Brunn opens fire at the Holocaust Museum, killing a security guard.

-- February 2010: An angry tax protester named Joseph Ray Stack flies an airplane into the building housing IRS offices in Austin, Texas. (Media are reluctant to label this one "domestic terrorism" too.)

-- March 2010: Seven militiamen from the Hutaree Militia in Michigan and Ohio are arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate local police officers with the intent of sparking a new civil war.

-- March 2010: An anti-government extremist named John Patrick Bedell walks into the Pentagon and opens fire, wounding two officers before he is himself shot dead.

-- May 2010: A "sovereign citizen" from Georgia is arrested in Tennessee and charged with plotting the violent takeover of a local county courthouse.

-- May 2010: A still-unidentified white man walks into a Jacksonville, Fla., mosque and sets it afire, simultaneously setting off a pipe bomb.

-- May 2010: Two "sovereign citizens" named Jerry and Joe Kane gun down two police officers who pull them over for a traffic violation, and then wound two more officers in a shootout in which both of them are eventually killed.

-- July 2010: An agitated right-winger and convict named Byron Williams loads up on weapons and drives to the Bay Area intent on attacking the offices of the Tides Foundation and the ACLU, but is intercepted by state patrolmen and engages them in a shootout and armed standoff in which two officers and Williams are wounded.

-- September 2010: A Concord, N.C., man is arrested and charged with plotting to blow up a North Carolina abortion clinic. The man, 26-year--old Justin Carl Moose, referred to himself as the "Christian counterpart to (Osama) bin Laden” in a taped undercover meeting with a federal informant.

-- January 2011: A 22-year-old gunman named Jared Lee Loughner with a long grudge against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and a paranoid hatred of the government walks into a public Giffords event and shoots her in the head, then keeps firing, killing six people and wounding 14 more. Gifford miraculously survives.

-- January 2011: A backpack bomb with the potential of killing or injuring dozens of people is found along the route of a Martin Luther King Day “unity march” in downtown Spokane.

-- January 31, 2011: An Army veteran from California with a previous arrest record for making threats against President Bush is arrested for making terrorist outside a mosque in Michigan inside a car whose trunk was filled with Class C explosives.

-- March 2011: Five people in the Fairbanks area are arrested on charges of plotting to kidnap or kill state troopers and a Fairbanks judge. All five are self-proclaimed "sovereign citizens," including local militia leader Schaeffer Cox.

-- March 2011: A man from Madera, CA, named Donny Eugene Mower is arrested for the firebombing of a Planned Parenthood clinic and the vandalization of a local Islamic religious center. The crimes were committed in the name of Mower's one-man hate group, the American Nationalist Brotherhood. His 'manifesto' asked: 'Isn't it time that someone hit back?'

We'll update as the incidents occur. Also, readers should feel free to contribute potential additions. Remember, these incidents involve more than simple threats or assaults but rather constitute incidents of actual domestic terrorism.

Obviously those lefties need to tone down the rhetoric.

It's their fault the Teabirchers are getting violent. Someone making sense and exposing all the conservative BS they believe in. I mean really, what else can a Teabircher do?

All I can say is that this list is overdue. We need to update this list as far back as we can go. It is a great list to refer to. It should show, in a nonspecific political direction, the eternal questions of who, what, why, when, where and how it happened.

Did you see this, David?

The guy did not commit physical violence; he has not been arrested; but he had a large stash of weapons in his place. He has a job, and it appears as if he owns/runs a business; he has no criminal record (i.e., he's a "normal" guy...not). And from what I have read about him, he doesn't like the government.

I wonder if he watches Beck? I wonder how long it would take for him to "lose it?"

I'm thinking of creating a separate map of "right-wing threats and assaults". But that would take a buttload more work. This guy would definitely be on the map.

And FWIW, our man in Belfast, Maine, was never arrested either, before he died. But the fact that he (a) had a dirty bomb in the works, and (b) had written out a plan of terroristic action earn him a place on the list.

Curious to know how many have been foiled...

60 Right-Wing Plots Foiled
From 7/12/05

In the 10 years since the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing killed 168 people, roughly 60 right-wing terrorist plots have been uncovered in the United States, according to an upcoming report by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project. The plots, all foiled by law enforcement, reportedly included violent plans by antigovernment militia groups, racist skinhead organizations, and Ku Klux Klan members to use various types of chemical bombs and other weapons.

Also, including or at least having a contrasting map with left-wing domestic terrorism would be valuable as a tool to disprove the idea that "both sides do it equally".

This part about why the wing-nuts and republicans are so unbelievably 'stupid' stood out for me...

If, on the other hand, you’re way ahead of me, and believe the extreme right-wing elements in America are poised to take it over, permanently, I think you can still get a lot from this book. The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank and file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?

Maybe republicans are just wired for authoritarianism. "Shudder"

Now let's challenge the moral relativists on the right to produce a similar map of violent "leftist" activities of any period in recent history. Even during the Bush administration when tempers were high on the left there was nothing even close to this.

50 years from now, historians will look at this period, with the "tea party" and the violent rhetoric, and make the obvious connection to the first african-american presidency. No doubt.

West Coast Wade's picture

In a land where the evening news broadcasts have always began with a daily body count is anyone really surprised? Twenty accounts of rightwing terrorism over the course of two years seems like a small number in the grand scheme of things. Sort of reminds me of the old cliche' "picking the fly shit out of the pepper." In the US: 2008 -16,440 murders were committed; in 2009 that number was 15,240.

Replace the shooting deaths or "murders" committed by these right-winger nutcases with "domestic terrorism" and the crime takes on a whole new meaning. This is simply a clarification not a justification.

The United States Government is the single greatest terrorist organization in the world.

A perpetual war machine funded by a trillion dollars per year spread across a thousand bases worldwide guarantees that this is so.

The small time right wingers are railing against a different government.

Their mission as manipulated by the big time right wingers is two fold. 1 - Spread the hate of the 'New Deal' government and 2 - help keep everyone afraid and thus ready to increase national security funding for ever increasing surveillance and loss of civil liberties.

You are helping the second cause here. And in addition, the use of the term 'radical' is best reserved for those who wish to reform, as in improve society, not for those who wish to destroy it.

And as for the Liberals, who are they? Not me! I'm a radical.

Back in the 60s when the only thing "conservative" was Joe Pine, and that only for a short time, the radicals on the Left were bombing the UW math building -- and killing -- and rioting regularly. But does anyone blame Walter Cronkite? Let's not forget the violence of the Green folks out in Seattle in more recent years, as well as in other places around the world.
Today the left's violence does not even require NPR, although Nina T might be held at fault. Or does it? You've got this abortionist killing born-alive children and the left giving it a pass, as though someone getting fired is enough to compensate for outright murder.

But does anyone blame Walter Cronkite?

I blame him for not speaking against the war sooner.

Let's not forget the violence of the Green folks out in Seattle in more recent years, as well as in other places around the world.

You mean the false flag staged so called 'anarchists'?

What violence?

You've got this abortionist killing born-alive children and the left giving it a pass, as though someone getting fired is enough to compensate for outright murder.

Now your agenda is clear.

I personally feel that abortion as birth control is an abomination. But you will have a hard time convincing me that born alive children are being killed is US medical procedures.

They certainly are being killed by the US military in various parts of the world.

They were arrested, stalked, hunted, and ultimately delegitimized to the point where all someone has to say today is that someone is a "leftie" or a "liberal" and 90% of the public recoils.

In other words, they enabled the rise of today's hard political right. So identifying today's extremists for what they are isn't the wrong thing to do. Perhaps conservatives should consider the consequences of playing straight into their hands instead of repudiating them and making specious claims that the left does the same thing.

BigDaddyMalcontent's picture

while the Weather Underground's activities did result in a couple fatalities, they weren't targeting people. They targeted buildings and even warned ahead of time that the building would be bombed.

And what violence by the "green folks" out in Seattle? If you're referring to tree spiking by Earth First! or property destruction by ELF, again, these weren't human targets.

There is absolutely no comparison between radical left groups and these right-wing extremists.

miss_kitty's picture

Walter Cronkite didn't load up his watchers and listeners on incendiary lies and bullshit.

The "Greens" in Seattle are like the "Greens around the world, a political party. If you mean ELF, not at all a part of the Green Party...they hit the Elizabeth Miller Horticultural Center late at night. Don't get me wrong; as a horticulture student then and now, I HATE that they did that. Not only was it wrong and disgusting, they had the wrong end of the stick about the studies going on there. And even if they had been correct, it still would have been wrong and disgusting. The fact they were mistaken just makes the hurt a bit worse.

And NPR? You consider THAT left? Why do you think those of us who actually listen hard to what the NPR message is call it "National Petroleum Radio?" They aren't any more left than NBC, CNN or the other funded by big business media outlets, including PBS (Petroleum Broadcasting System, brought to you in part by Exxon/Mobil, Monsanto and David Koch).

Hard Justice's picture

...The go-to false equivalency for Conservatives everywhere. And as mentioned previously, the 60's/Kronkite/NPR references don't hold much water.

So where's your map & documentation of the Left-wing incidents, justmeoverhere? The reason why Conservatives don't bother to make one is because it would show just how lopsided these incidents are, dogmaticaly/politically speaking.

Comparison FAIL.

Google "missouri state highway patrol militia report". It was prepared as a result of troopers being shot at by members of these groups. Of course the right howled that the danger signs in the report represented the views of half the state, so the report must be rescinded. Which it quickly was with apologies (same as the similar DOJ report). Of course, living in Missouri, I too am rightfully real fearful of that superhighway coming thru here with all them illegal Mexicans driving goods to Canada. Obama FEMA camps also too. It's coming dabgummit.
