Carmen McRae - one of the great Jazz Singers with over sixty albums to her credit.

Sunday starts a new weekend series. Since I've been devoting so many of the Gallimaufry posts to Jazz concerts, excluding everything else meant for that slot, I thought it would be best just to give all the Jazz concerts over to their own slot. So welcome to a new weekend feature.

Today it's back over to Birdland on 52nd Street in Manhattan for a club date featuring the great vocalist Carmen McRae backed up with The Australian Jazz Quintet. The show is from March 12, 1956. McRae is in fine form, as usual and the AJQ (as opposed to the MJQ) back her quite nicely and it's a shame they didn't record more together. Actually, AJQ recorded very little and they've been largely overlooked as far as Jazz history is concerned, but in the 1950's they were a very popular outfit on the club circuit.

A nice show and a good Sunday post-Christmas chill-out.
