Here's the audio form today's conference call with Speaker Pelosi about the release of the House bill.. Sorry, I'm a bit under the weather so I don't have the blow by blow, but I was able to get on the call and record it for you. She didn't know if she would allow amendments to the bill, but was against the idea. There were a few questions from bloggers that followed.

(I edited out just a few minutes because there was a technical problem when the conference service tried to connect bloggers to ask their questions.)

UPDATE I: To members of the media, please credit Crooksandliars.com if you use any portion of this audio. Thank you in advance.

UPDATE II:

mcjoan has a great write up of the conference call: Pelosi: House Bill is a "Manifestation of Rejecting Business as Usual"

Because there has been conflicting information this morning on whether amendments would be allowed for the bill, I asked Speaker Pelosi if that decision had been made. As of yet, she says she's been too busy getting the bill melded to focus on that, but that she "would have to be talked into it," but isn't closed. The fly in the ointment on amendments is Rep. Bart Stupak and threat to team up with Republicans "unless Democratic leaders allow a floor vote on an amendment that would add new restrictions on the use of federal funding for health plans that cover abortion with private dollars."

This complicates the issue of the single payer amendment that Rep. Anthony Weiner was promised he would be able to offer. When Chris Bowers asked about it, Pelosi said that she would be meeting with Weiner and Rep. Kucinich today or tomorrow. Additionally, Rep. Grijalva is continuing to push for the robust public option.

"I am not rolling over. I will insist on a Medicare-plus-five amendment on the Floor so that the full Caucus can vote on it. We are hopeful that the Rules Committee will allow this amendment, which has tremendous public support, to be voted on for the record."

Leadership, including Rules Committee chair Louise Slaughter, are going to have some interesting needle-threading to do on the rule for floor action and the amendment process on this one. The schedule has not yet been determined completely. It will be available for the next 72 hours for all members to access, then will be submitted as the manager's amendment Monday morning. Floor action could begin as soon as next Thursday. She said that it's possible to have a vote before Veterans Day, Nov. 11, but as of yet that's not decided.

The Stock Market is up 2%, the Corporations must like the bill.

Why not? They wrote it.

There were several things that contributed to the market's rise today. It began early in the day with the unemployment figures being not good but better than expected.

Analysts give lots of reasons for why the markets move as they do. Mostly it is guess work.

Whatever the case, it doesn't change my expectation that the Corporations wrote the thing.

I certainly did not expect that it would nor could anything else.

looking at the market this morning, every single health carrier is up significantly. And since the market "is never wrong" it means they are the ones benefiting, not us.

That is a difference without a distinction.

The barbaric fact of profit from the payment for health care will remain. We are the only advanced country that allows it.

It calls into question the definition of advanced.

... it questions our basic humanity though.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather.

Thanks for the audio.

She didn't know if she would allow amendments to th ebill, but was against the idea.

Maybe she should confer with Harry Reid and get some tips on how to write a harshly worded letter.

bring his amendment (H.R. 676) to the full House for a debate and vote.

It's already been scored by the Congressional Budget Office in preparation for the debate/vote.

Why will I NOT be surprised if she reneges on her promise to Rep. Weiner or if he drops the amendment.

Screwed again???

If she allows amendments will that open the door to more BS from the GOP and colored canines?

Kos also has a post about this. I took the following from the post there.

"Because there has been conflicting information this morning on whether amendments would be allowed for the bill, I asked Speaker Pelosi if that decision had been made. Hmmm...someone in here mentioned months ago that abortion was going to have a significant impact on the healthcare debate.

Hmmm...wonder who that was?

I give up. Who was it.

Even though it is illegal for fed money to go to pay for abortions, they still keep bitching and moaning. The Hyde Amendment takes care of that.

Grrrrrrr

C'mon, Pop...government money is used for abortions every day.

The Hyde Amendment is window dressing.

No one goes for AN ABORTION!! DA DAAAAAAAA!

No...it appears under any number of high falootin' sounding medical procedure nomenclatures.

And I'm not saying it shouldn't. It's POLITICS. That's why the evangelicals still push and push to limit it in any way they can.

WOW

Thanks - now I am better informed.

I really can't stay read up on the minute details.

Generally I am optimistic. Of course there will be compromises - some bitter and hard to swallow but this is not all bad.

at least the bill does not require us to sacrifice our first born. So yeah, it is not *that* bad.

Seriously, what would define "bad" for some of you?

No advanced country allows profit in health care payments, except us.

That, it seems, is not going to change.

So whatever little might be good, that barbaric fact will remain.

The health insurers are TOO BIG TO FAIL!

profit in health care payments is banned. If anything, this is round 1 of so called health insurance reform. A bill may be passed but the people are still losing the war where health care is concerned.

"f*cks again...

Take care of yourself John. This is scary when anyone says they don't feel well right now. Take care of yourself first, the posters here at C&L can carry the weight of the site until you feel better.

I'm too scared to ask about anybody under the weather for fear it is Mr. Trips (H1N1). Two people I know have had it - neither needed much medical care and both have recovered *knock on wood*

Even though Mrs. Pelosi really said nothing (she talked a lot though). But that is not your responsibility.

Kinda like when she was here.

Lots of breaking wind...but she never takes that dump.

???

Anal retentive?

Who knew?

:)

eh?

;-)

And

She does make an odd face once in a while

lol

... she's had so many skin lifts, I am sure that thing moving is her belly button.

Yip

WASHINGTON — House Democratic leaders have scheduled a rally for Thursday where they plan to unveil legislation to overhaul the health care system, which they hope to take to the House floor next week.

Scores of lobbyists were “cordially invited’’ to attend the event in e-mail messages sent Wednesday by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

That's says it all. I'm through with Dems. Lifelong, no more.

Bye!!!

for the audio. get well.........

ALL TALK NO BOTTOM LINE.

This bill is shit.

She's been "for single-payer" for thirty years, but we can't talk about single payer now because it hasn't been scored? WTF?

Over the past thirty years, do you think The Speaker of The House of Representatives has met any powerful people in Congress who could have had this scored by now?

And hiding behind a deceased Ted Kennedy to justify her corporate giveaway was pretty low class.

Being "for" it isn't the same as passing it! I'm sure she'd be "for" it for another 30 years if she could, bless her Democratic heart!

Any "little single payer advocates" on the call, or did the "progressives" and the FKDP exclude and censor them, as usual?
