Is Huckleberry the new GOP answer?

I do like Chris Cillizza's The FIX column for the WaPo on most days and he's been very helpful via e-mails, but what was up with his man-crush on Lindsey Graham after watching him on MTP? Graham is a constant figure on the talk-show circuit and has been for a long time, so I really find it surprising that Chris would almost call him " A New Republican Leader?"

Dispirited Republicans looking for national leaders amid a wash of scandals that have dominated national news over the last fortnight got a bit of good news on Sunday with an inspired performance on "Meet the Press" by South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R).

Graham, who spent the 2008 election cycle as Sen. John McCain's loyal sidekick, appeared alongside former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, the GOP frontrunner in advance of 2012, and managed to stand out.

Why? Because unlike other Republicans who seem to be so fixated on scoring political points on President Obama, Graham was willing to point out where his own party had strayed while also making a reasonable argument for GOP ideals...read on

All he's every been is a yes man for John McCain ever since I can remember who seems jacked up on Red Bull most days when he's in front of the cameras. I'd like Chris to answer the question I posed on Sunday: Why was he on NBC at all when he clearly is compromised when talking about Gov. Mark Sanford -- because he's Godfather to several of his kids? Maybe that was the reason Chris thought that he seemed a bit more humble than usual? Huckleberry was really close to Sanford and had to be torn up inside over Sanford's affair, but it really didn't stop him from taking shots at President Obama even when he tried to compliment him.

d-day writes:

This is pretty unbelievable. Somehow, calling Obama a dissembler and a thug is tempered by saying that he appears to not be sleeping around. And it's notable for Graham to point out that he voted against one article of impeachment, despite being a HOUSE MANAGER for the impeachment trial and perhaps as visible as any politician in that entire episode. Graham has been questioning the patriotism and the judgment of any Democrat in his path for well over a decade. And using the words "Karl Rove politics" or "Tom DeLay politics" hardly changes the fact that Graham's record was more conservative than DeLay when he was in the House. Graham's words about "bipartisanship" are nonsense and never match his actions.

No, the principle spokesperson for the GOP is Michelle Bachmann.

I hope they make her the voice of the GOP. He's manly, how they like 'em.

Graham/Bachmann or Bachmann/Graham - the first ambiguously non-male ticket ever!!

Talk about shrinking the appeal of the GOP . . sheesh!

This will be so much fun. We will be respectful of his being gay. We will be understanding about his being a "rebel sympathizer" We will not however allow his criminal enterprises to go unnoticed.
"Pearls" is a wonderful 18th choice for fearless leader. It's rather like the parade of generals in cheney's war for oil? Couldn't find a competent commander that would violate the Geneva Convention, so they threw them out, one after another.
We really know how to promote the unqualified in this country, don't we?

Miss Lindsey went on MTP to play the emotional/sympathy "nice guy" card and said nothing really of politics. Lots of "code" thrown out to the religious right, about being sinners, praying, etc.

Sanford has admitted meeting his little cupcake several times ...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted
Tuesday that he saw his Argentine mistress more times than
previously disclosed, including what was to be a farewell meeting
in New York chaperoned by a spiritual adviser soon after his wife
found out about the affair.

Disenchanted Dems could be a big problem. Many first time voters came out to support Obama because they were inspired by him or merely as a rejection of McCain/Palin. They may not be voting next time.

But that man is a menace. Calling him "Huckleberry" is hateful. It's like calling him a "cracka". Hate speech.

More lies from one of the "family values" Clinton inquisitors

Lindsgay and Mittens are such fucking hypocrites!!! If that were Clinton or a Democratic governor Lindsgay and Mittens would be flopping around on the floor like fish out of water in a frothy rage demanding he resign or be impeached!! They wouldn't give a fuck about their family.

Annoyed Canuck's picture

. . . Republicans secretly like these public marital/sex/fidelity scandals. These events allow them to act all human and contrite and apologetic and somber. They get to show they're "real", that they're flawed, that they're "just folks".

Perversely, this is useful to them. It reinforces reduced expectations on the part of voters. Who benefits? Sarah Palin - she may not know anything, her family may be flawed, but goldarn it, they're real people! They've got problems just like me!

Romney, too. To a red-stater, he looks pretty good compared to Sandord. Mormonism doesn't seem so weird when so many family values Christians out there are being exposed as adulterous hypocrites.

I call Huckabee, "Huckleberry". This is starting to confuse me.

Maybe Graham and McCain have broken up and now he's Romney's new Tonto.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Shoeless's picture

Through the process of elimination, Graham is the new leader of the GOP. Which can only mean one thing. Graham is about to be caught up in some kind of scandal. As to what kind of scandal, who knows. It seems that Republicans can be very creative when it comes to having thier skeletons exposed. My guess is that it will involve some guy named Bruce, a pair of stilleto heels and a Virginia ham.

Is Lindsey Graham the new Ronald Reagan?

And by that I mean, is Lindsey Graham the new sissy-who-Republicans-dress-up-as-a-statesman? Will he sell arms to terrorists, like Reagan did? Will he wear makeup and dye his hair, like Reagan did? Will he lose his marbles and become a shambling figurehead, like Reagan did?

Gee, I sure hope so!

I can't remember which show but there was a commentator on who explained it nicely. He said repubs feel they are on the right path and dems are going to hell in a hand basket. When a republican gets caught they say well we were on the right path but we strayed. When dems get caught doing something the repubs say they aren't surprised that dems would just speed up their route to hell.

Until it comes out that he's sleeping with barn animals.

no self-respecting barn animal would sleep with Lindsey. :-)

I hate how the Repubs are directing this issue towards Sanfords private life. I don't care what happens to his marriage! The fact is this guy disappeared for 4 days without contact and left his state governor-less and that's irresponsible. Stop diverting the issue into a family issue in a twisted attempt to save this man's job because of his family situation. I've read places where South Carolinians are already blaming the mistress and even the wife for his failure. and we all know rush limbaugh blames obama for it. yes...this is anyone BUT Sanford's fault. FAIL

Shadowgm's picture

In addition to the dereliction of duty, Sanford is being dishonest with his wife (new revelations about further meetings with Ms. Chapur, including one with 'spiritual advisor' Cubby along for the ride) - therefore, we can gather he's equally trustworthy when it comes to running the state.

So the affair is merely a glimpse into Sanford's (lacking) character.

Lindsay "Scarlet O'Harrah" Graham is in a catch-22 with the republican
christiofascist base. He cannot afford to be outed, which means he can never be a contender for the party leadership.

He is a modern day Roy Cohn. Living his life of hypocricy as close to the edge as possible, without fully emersing himself into the contender spotlight.

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

Mike The Riverine's picture

There's an old saying that when a Southern woman says "Well, bless his heart" it's their code word for "Fuck him".

Well, the new standard is when Limpwrist Graham says "I'm the godfather of Mark Sanford's child", it's actually code for "this dumbfuck made it worse for all of us".

Republicans once again prove they are the immoral minority.
