The NRCC wants to put women in their place.
Conservatives just can't help it when they act like misogynists. It's hard wired into their DNA much the same way it's hard wired into Richard Land's views about women. The National Republican Congressional Committee is attacking Nancy Pelosi and is really hoping that Gen. McChrystal will put her in her place in their latest fundraising press release.
Now, Pelosi is backpedaling on Afghanistan amidst increasing criticism from the radical left:
"I've also made it clear it's a very difficult vote to get from the members," she added. "Their constituents don't like an escalated war in Afghanistan. They'd like to see a different approach. But let's see what the president has to say." (Glenn Thrush, “Pelosi skeptical about Afghan surge, McChrystal,” Politico, 10/05/2009)
“General Pelosi has no problem sacrificing her own credibility as the Obama administration and liberals in Congress attempt to walk back a strategy they strongly advocated just months ago,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Nancy Pelosi continues to make party politics a higher priority than our national security. Rather than listening to a four-star general’s assessments on Afghanistan, General Pelosi somehow believes she is better suited to craft our country’s military policy.” If Nancy Pelosi’s failed economic policies are any indicator of the effect she may have on Afghanistan, taxpayers can only hope McChrystal is able to put her in her place.
Matt Yglesias says that the NRCC is trying to "deploy a touch of the old condescending sexism via the Speaker of the House of Representatives."
Nancy Pelosi responded to the NRCC like this:
"It's really sad they don't understand how inappropriate that is," Pelosi told reporters at her weekly press conference. " I'm in my place. I'm the Speaker of the House, the first woman Speaker of the House. And I'm in my place because the House voted me there. That language is something I hadn't heard in decades."
I always love how conservatives attack Democratic women and want them to stay home and watch the kids, but when it comes a conservative in politic they flip flop to try and appear as if they support women's rights. Here's Richard Land on MTP back in 2005 sharing his vision of women in America:
Russert: We can try to find common ground, but there are differences, and I want to see just how profound they are. The Southern Baptist Convention in 1998 passed this statement on the family: "...A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband... She...has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household..."And, Reverend Land, you went on to explain it this way: "If a husband does not want his wife to work outside the home, then she should not work outside the home." Is that your vision of America?
DR. LAND: It's my vision for Christian families. I don't think that the law has anything to do with it.
And as usual Beck rules: Dear Mom, Beck has history of sexist comments

There are women who support the GOP?
In this day and age - that's just sad.

as an old school proponant of feminism that we finally have a female Speaker-----knowing that it won't be long before we have a female president of The United States!
That being said, I wonder if re-instituting the Draft, or at least some form of mandatory service to our country for two years or so upon graduation from High school, is where we need to go. Our communities are suffering in so many ways, and with our families being broken by the fact that men and women can serve in the military, it is important that we balance that with a requirement for the kids coming out of school.
Where else are our kids going to be confronted with any sort of discipline after school? Parents are gone---most without fathers, teachers are no longer relavant, the police (or gangs) remain as the only resource for young kids. We know they need a place..............and it's becoming obvious that the government needs to start to provide it!
What do YOU think?
dandy
What do you mean by:
...with our families being broken by the fact that men and women can serve in the military...
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
I mean moms can serve in the military, period! Dads always have served. Kids, therefore, are left alone, especially if the family is already in divorce or seperation mode. I mean that this is common sense!
dandy
If you're trying to garner support for feeding the MIC, you may be in the wrong place.
Just for S&Gs, let's say I accept your premise that "families are broken", you are also asking that I accept that military service is the reason.
So are you saying that Dads are less responsible for parenting than Moms?
Got to get to class-be back later to see what you say.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
No, no, no.........
I'm not asserting that the military is responsible. I'm saying that, given the fact that women can now serve, and that families (especially in the black communiity ARE facing sperm-donated relationships), and that the economy forces men AND women to find a way to survive regardless of race, community, etc., the children are left to fiend for themselves after coming out of school----if they come out with a diploma.
Also, let's face it.....the "fabric" of this country is severely torn. I mean really, there is no real "allegiance" to the flag as we knew it. It's time to repair the allegiance again!
dandy
That is bundling a wide variety of issues.
Thank you for backing off the "families being broken by the fact that men and women can serve in the military" thing.
I believe that a little research will show that women have always participated in the military, especially here in North America. Maybe not in large numbers, but in some countries it is required regardless of gender,i.e.,Israel, and has been for decades.
As to fathers, alternatively, if being single, poor, and pregnant lacked prestige, we would see the rates drop. True no matter what the color of the skin.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
time?
Is it impossible for both parents not to be deployed at the same time? I didn't think it was.
There are a lot of young people joining the military for the money because they need it so badly. If both the man and woman have joined, met in the military and married and then have a baby, that's rough on the little baby and the relatives that must step in to help out.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Interesting point: what does happen to women who become pregnant while on active duty?
The President has talked about something like that but I don't remember the details. Of course as soon as he mentions it, the right is going to scream "brown shirts" and "indoctrination" and "camps".
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I'd really like to know what YOU think?
dandy
MMMNNNN.
I think some sort of community service would be wonderful for everyone. Yes, families are torn to hell by all sorts of things. Sadly they always have been. I'm just afraid this country has out grown the community spirit for the most part and with the economy such as it is, I don't see positive changes ahead, at least not in the near term. The necessity right now for families to move all around sort of disolves the idea of "my community"
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
My kids don't need to be forced into military service.
As for the rest of our problems, they could easily be fixed by dismantling corporate fascism, taking back the 26% of wealth the rich stole from the middle class, and reinstating a progressive tax system so that the rich cannot steal everything.
Public lynchings for Wall Street criminals, lobbyists, bribocrats and goper's would round out the main event.
Don't see mandatory militarism doing any of that.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
But our military is no longer used for defense. The military is now used by corporations for the subjegation of countries with resources that those corporations want.
During Vietnam, poor folks got sent to the jungle to die; wealthy scions like GWBush, Dan Quayle and the rest were kept stateside and out of harm's way.
Bad idea.
Dandy's idea would only exasperate the very problem she claims to want to solve.
I didn't have military service in mind but more like community service. Tutoring kids after school. Visiting old folks and giving them some help or just company for a while. Things like that and so much more.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Helping old folks paint their houses or helping single, working parents with child care.
That could really help a lot of people here at home.
of that.

That you are the Speaker Of The House Ms. Pelosi.
Nowhere in Ken Spain's comment did he bring sex into the debate. By putting one in their so called 'place' Spain's comment was directed at a civilian with NO military experience countermanding the recommendation of a military professional. Only a Democrat looking to make this out as something more than an honest assessment of the Administrations bewildering and to date, failed policy in Afghanistan, would float such a supposition.
It is Pelosi who plays the sex card with the lame reminder that "(I am)the first woman Speaker of the House".
No need to remind us Nancy. We've seen you INACTION and gutless posturing for the past three years. After kowtowing to GW Bush with refusal to investigate eight years of criminal activity and lackluster support of your own damn President someone needs to put you in your place... on the street when the Electorate tosses you out of office.

You probably believe it's her fault they broke the law, and to whatever extent they told her about what they were doing, you probably think she's immoral and ought to resign because she didn't raise hell about shit they told her in a CLASSIFIED BRIEFING.
Yeah, that Evil Nancy Pelosi, there she goes again, NOT revealing the contents of classified briefings...

Attaboy, you screwed up bunch of devil worshippin'babtist(you all love Ronald666WilsonReagan..the devil666) and you all hate women. That's why the NRCC wants the Bible rewritten because it's too "liberal". They don't want women to do more than sex off in front of them. Magdalene should be the "bitch of Christ" in the rewrite. You know, this is how republicans think. Sick ass bunch of dumb shits. Hell, the NRCC could never rewrite the bible, how, in the hell, when they never read it?..."Oh...you, Palin, go write a book. Put that woman in her place, and clean up my mess, clean my house and wash my clothes...."
Oh, yeah, sick-ass republicants can't even run a country or a war. That's why were in this trouble. That's why they want to rewrite the bible. Now I get it. Apparently the GOP feels liberated because we have an African American, they do not and never will respect, in office. So all bets are off, and their true colors are showing. We have always known--but look at the this list of remarks just in the last month.
1. A new Oklahoma law will require the details of every abortion to be posted on a public website
2.Kyl's recent quip during a Senate committee meeting that he doesn't "need maternity care."
3. Chris Christie, Republican gubernatorial candidate from New Jersey, equates preschool to babysitting.
4.John Derbyshire --We’d be a better country if women didn’t vote
5.This from the free republic website-- On Mary Cheney expecting her second child—“I wonder if Hallmark makes a card for this occasion? Yathink? Congratulations on your baster bastard?"
6.On Tuesday, 30 Republican senators voted against an amendment bars companies that discourage female employees from filing sexual harassment suits from securing government contracts.
7.Bob McDonnell in Virginia, says in his college thesis written in 1989 when McDonnell was 34 years old, in which he seems to call working women detrimental to families.
We won't even mention the remaks about gays, Latinos, African- Americans, attacks on ACORN,and unions, the fight over the female Supreme Court nominee. Keep up the good work--GOP--keep pushing. Keep alienating these groups. See how far your biblical opportunism get you.
I see a pattern of hate, discrimination, bigotry, and a strong resistance to changing this. Moreover, i see Republicans rejecting the teachings of Christ.

I think Nixon was just a warm up, the real deal came with Raygun and his pack of jackals. They managed to shift the country so much to the right, that if you do an objective analysis of the policies of the Clinton admin (our last supposedly liberal administration prior to the current one), one can make a pretty well informed case that most of those policies were to the right of Nixon.
"our last supposedly liberal administration prior to the current one"
Yes "supposedly" is the right choice.
You make a pretty compelling case for the Reagan gang as well whose Iran/Contra misadventures and their penchant for propping up S American Right-wing Death squads take a backseat to no one.

That's what you get when you play softball with these snakes. Pelosi and democrats in general are spineless. We need more people hitting back, like Barney Frank and Alan Grayson.
Is anyone else bothered by the complete cognitive dissonance?
So, the NRCC mailer takes this quote (which is taken out of context - Pelosi is clearly answering a specific question, and this is only part of her answer):
"I've also made it clear it's a very difficult vote to get from the members," she added. "Their constituents don't like an escalated war in Afghanistan. They'd like to see a different approach. But let's see what the president has to say."
And the NRCC has this response:
"Nancy Pelosi continues to make party politics a higher priority than our national security. Rather than listening to a four-star general’s assessments on Afghanistan, General Pelosi somehow believes she is better suited to craft our country’s military policy."
Huh?
Where did Pelosi say anything about crafting military policy or contradicting a four star general?
Then they wrap it up with this complete non sequitor:
"If Nancy Pelosi’s failed economic policies..." [as if any of "her" policies have been implemented or have failed] "...are any indicator of the effect she may have on Afghanistan,..." [is the author worried about the sub-prime mortgage market in Mazar-e-Sharif? I think it's kind of sub-prime, by the way] "...taxpayers can only hope McChrystal is able to put her in her place."
This is like the criticism of Giuliani: noun + verb + 9/11, only they are mostly sticking with nouns.
It should be easy to put together a computer program to generate Republican mailers: "Radical left Obama-ACORN death panels want to raise your taxes and threaten national christian security with terrorist Michael Moore socialism."
Looks pretty good.

Her reply shown shows her total sophistication and charm. And she happens to be one of the most effective Speakers that progressives have had. She stands up for all of the things I care about. I am really glad to have Nancy Pelosi in Congress. She is great!
Say what you want about her, personally every time I see her the hair on the back of my neck stands up, and it's not because she's a woman who happens to be speaker of the house. In her body language and speech she comes off as smug. In my opinion that just don't play whether you wear a dress or pants.
Given that they seem to dislike almost any identifiable group the usual terms don't seem appropriate. What do you expect from the party of bullet-headed men and helmet-haired women?
The GOP has become the party of the Confederacy. I've been in parts of the South, and men have their guns and dogs and backtalk from women is usually handled with physical abuse. Women are expected to look coiffed and keep their mouth shut and cook, clean and birth out rednecks.
