Go Home

I saw this last week and didn't get a chance to make the clip, but Bay Buchanan was on CNN and told us how the right wing will bring bipartisanship to the table as Obama takes office.

BUCHANAN: Well, it all depends on which direction the country -- Obama wants to take the country. If he is really going to govern from the center and recognizes that the nation is center to right, then we're gonna work with him, just as we worked with Bill Clinton to get welfare reform...

Obama won a clear mandate to lead this country the way he sees fit and America wants to get things done. So this statement by Buchanan, and dozens of other conservative talking heads like her in the days since the election, is very dangerous for the Right. If they are perceived as obstructionists during this time of heavy economic crisis then their brand of politics will be damaged all the more.

Personally, I hope they do it. They helped make the case for Obama with their constant personal attacks as well as calling him a "Socialist" and a "Marxist." Keep up the good work, guys and gals. You are making my job so much easier. As for the talking point that America is a center-right country, Media Matters has more.

...a poll conducted November 4-5 showed strong support for the progressive positions that Obama has articulated on the issues, rebutting the claim that the United States is a conservative country.

Several in the media have claimed that President-elect Barack Obama won the election because he ran as a conservative and that notwithstanding Obama's victory, the United States is a conservative country.

In claiming that Obama ran as a conservative, these media figures ignore the central components of his platform, including repeal of tax cuts for the wealthy, near-universal health-care coverage, and redeployment of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

Read about all the results here.

The funny thing is, Obama could govern as the second coming of Ronald Reagan and the Right would still find excuses to call him a Marxist.

FilthyHarry's picture

One righty who was accusing Obama of being a raging socialist 2 weeks ago, now says (after Obama won) that Obama won because he ran as a reaganite fiscal conservative.

They just say whats expedient at that moment.

Reagan was a raging socialist and a fiscal conservative? Damn! These talking head politicos certainly know how to lie grandly through their teeth! Having no conscience will, I suppose, allow them to do it and sleep at night.

I do think that our entire history of US politics when framed by world political views shows we have right of center - authoritarian elected officials.

I would recommend looking at The Political Compass and visually see the full picture of our small political spectrum framed by world politics.

Baye Buchanan's gave the perfect illustration of what republicans mean by bipartisan. When republicans say bipartisan, it means you give us everything we want. We will give you nothing in return, and then will stab you in back afterwards. Well if the republicans think that's how it's going to work, they are in for a rude awakening. If the republicans use the filibuster to derail every piece of the legislation, the dems need to use the "nuclear option". Ban the filibuster. It's what the republicans wanted to do when they were in charge. What's good for the goose, is good for the gander.

DNC better crack the whip and get their people out onto the circuit and start disproving these meme that the country is center-right before it becomes one of those facts everyone just accepts.

This should be easy to do since all the recent evidence shows the country is center-left if not just left.

They don't have to convince the talking heads on the right, since they couldn't anyway, just have to argue louder and more forcefully so that when the right does bring this BS up it seems as ridiculous as it really is.

If one considers shoving a wide and sharp hot poker up the ass and down the throat at every turn "working with someone" then Bay Bay is correct.

You know the ones I'm talking about. They'll jump in to play a game and after 5 minutes try to take charge and stop the game unless everyone will play by the new rules they've just made up. Rules that will assure them of a win. We call them "social bullies".

If the dems are as smart as your average 3rd grader they either won't let them play at all or give them one of those 'important' roles in the game that is powerless.

Poll after poll I've seen would suggest that there is a distinct 'leftness' to the USA.

UHC, abortion, taxes, etc. All in favor of the left of what would be considered to be lest positions.

Abortion, a CNN poll at the end of August put the numbers at 53% pro-choice. An overwhelming number approve of abortion (with restrictions)

Environment. ABC News. 61% think the government should be more involved in helping do something about global warming.

Gun laws. 54% support stricter gun laws.

Health Care. 66% would support higher taxes if it meant coverage for all.

Gay marriage? Well, there majority don't support the legal opportunity for same sex marriage. 47% oppose. 47% support.

I'm sorry, Bae, when was torture and wiretapping approved by the people?

These guys are setting the groundwork for either a) taking the credit for successes or b) distancing themselves from failures. It doesn't matter what is true. If Obama and the Dems are successful these talking heads will proclaim he's governing from the center right. If Obama and the Dems are not successful, the head will condemn them as governing from the left.

The whole "center-right" is such a non-statement. If you divide the population into three equal parts i.e. a)right b)center c)left then of course 2/3rds are going to be "center-right" just as two thirds are "center-left". Democrats have won the popular vote in FOUR OUT OF THE LAST FIVE presidential elections.

When the American people are asked their stances on individual issues, they tend to take the progressive side, even if they identify themselves as conservatives or center-right. (It's like that old Pepsi challenge. People identify as Coke drinkers, and will even buy Coke after saying Pepsi tastes better in a blind taste test.)

In our idiotic two-party system, it's difficult to tell precisely why people vote for one party or the other at a given moment in history, but there is no basis for insisting that America is a "center right" nation.

The US is a center right nation compared to the world, and its spectrum from progressive but capitalist (center) to reactionary but capitalist is very narrow (right). The people were given a narrow choice between a more rightish and a more centrish candidate. They chose centrish. So if Obama ran like a fascist or a Trotskyite, he would be going off script.

The problem is that the Republicans have wilfully misconstrued what it means to be a center right country. It means that even our leftists are very mild compared to the world. It does not mean that a legitimate president must rule from the center-right quadrant of the narrow spectrum of US politics. If Obama runs like a moderate to progressive Democrat, he'll be representing the people well.

Now as we have seen Bush Administration take the US into a recession and Obama wins by an unheard of 365 electorial vote here comes the GOP talking about what they want to cooperate. Republicans have LOST ALL LEGITIMATE CLAIMS to a right-of-center country... the totals of last week's electoral votes PROVES THIS TO BE TRUE, and it proves them to be wrong. They should all crawl into a dark hole till they can come up with a different candidate... and some fresh new ideas... that might WIN THEIR VOTERS BACK. Until then... they are irrelevant.

I pretty much heard the same thing from Hannity. I'll go on a whim and say this is the new talking points sanctioned by conservatives. Perhaps this was the result of all that brain storming during that get together over at Bozell's house the other day. Their idea of compromising is that they will accept Obama as President as long as he implements their policies. How magnanimous. President Obama should make an attempt to find some middle ground but if conservatives attempt to dictate domestic and foreign policy as if they hold the cards then Obama should play hardball and begin taking away concessions. Whether conservatives like it or not, the people have spoken.

I think the meme for the Democrats is to turn the socialist argument on its head by telling the truth: 20 years of increasing lobbyist power have resulted in corporate hegemony of government.

Remember that these clowns "make" their "own reality" -- as Goebbels famously said - if you repeat a lie often enough - it is perceived as the truth. This is EXACTLY what they are doing now - attempting to create their own reality of a center-right nation. Unhappily for them, it simply doesn't exist.

We need the left to stand up to this firmly and even with a "in-your-face" attitude. This is NOT a center-right country and Obama has a mandate in excess of 8 million votes to prove it.

Katrina vanden Heuvel's article over at Huffingtonpost are excellent for this purpose. We need to constantly refute the reich's misleading statement AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

We now keep hearing, for instance, that America is “a center-right nation” — apparently because the percentages of Americans who call themselves conservative (34), moderate (44) and liberal (22) remain virtually unchanged from four years ago. But if we’ve learned anything this year, surely it’s that labels are overrated. Those same polls find that more and more self-described conservatives no longer consider themselves Republicans. Americans now say they favor government doing more (51 percent), not less (43) — an 11-point swing since 2004 — and they still overwhelmingly reject the Iraq war. That’s a centrist country tilting center-left, and that’s the majority who voted for Obama.

The entire piece is worth reading.

bamboozled's picture

they would have voted for McCain and Palin.

This is pure spin, which is all they have now. Keep it up, and the mid-term will see the final throws of the Republican party.

The reason why Obama was successful is because he's articulated what Americans are feeling and where they stand on virtually every issue.

And the reason why the Democrats smashed the Republicans in the mid-term elections was because THEY ran on a strong "get out of Iraq" platform. Had they followed through, they'd have had the votes to be fillibuster-proof. But instead, they've dropped the meat in the dirt.

Obama, from our limited knowledge of him, will not allow that to happen.

Caveat's picture

Most Americans are liberal in outlook. Most support reproductive rights, gay rights, decrim, some measure of gun control, sep of church and state, etc, etc. That's what polls have shown for years and that's why the Dems have screwed up so many times. In being afraid to mention these issues, in other words by buying into the BS spread by a noisy minority on the fringe, they have failed to attract the vote. Obama handled this properly and look at the result.

As for these conehead so-called 'conservatives', WHY ARE THEY STILL TALKING? Nobody particularly cares what they think.

It's going to be painful watching the death throes of the hate movement, which are now underway. I expect O'Really to lose it live any day now.

GOP, Fox News, GOP pundits, or small c christians all have to be taken with no grain of salt at all. Their spin is redundant, predictable and their intention is not for the sake of America but for the sake of their party ideology. They will lie, distort, misinterpret and sling spaghetti tactics to see what will stick on a daily basis. The American public is not only familiar and aware and renouncing their discourse; they ignore it as laughable.
The GOP base, let's label them Palinites, are considered by other than the base GOP voters as yesterdays agenda and though they have the GOP by the throat (or other anatomical parts), the congress and senate GOP individuals will be less incline anymore to toe the line, lock step as before. That is an obvious fact that will have a major impact on Democratic reform. I expect a major backlash towards the Palinites; a new breed of GOP not easily intimidated by the neocons and christians is cropping up. I expect that distancing themselves from the Palinites will be their survival instinct. They do not want to see a resurgence of neocon Palinites power. From viewing the various video clips, you would think the Republicans won in every category: Executive Senate and Congressional. They have not. Within every level of government, Americans "kicked the bums out."

Leave it up to the "Spin Doctors" to call it like Druge wrote it. Now, we can look at all that has been done to change the face of our political climate. So, the millions in dollars, the hours of strategical planing and the hundreds of man hours will now fall prey to a simple counter statement: "The Democrats really won by being Republicans." The Republicans may not of stole another election, but they have not trying to steal something that is not theirs.

On cue, the Republicans have made this year a monumental year of blunders and political bad moves. Everything they have did and said came out ass backwards and in most cases was used against them. This current claim will be no exception. You need only ask John McCain and Sarah Palin. They took the lead in blunders.

In this election, Americans said one thing loud and clear: "we our not stupid and we want our country back." Change is in and we have to make it work for us. It is truly an exciting time.
