Shame in the Philadelphia Flyers and Ed Snider.
Sports and politics should not mix, not here and not now, less than four weeks before such a critical presidential election. But that's exactly what rabid GOP supporter Ed Snider will be doing this weekend, inviting "hockey mom" Sarah Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers' season opener, and more. Here's from the Flyers' own release:
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the nation’s most popular hockey mom, will join the winner of the Philadelphia Flyers regional search for the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” contest and drop the puck at the ceremonial opening face-off as the home team Flyers host the New York Rangers at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, October 11 at 7 p.m. “Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started,” said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider who founded the Flyers in 1967. “We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey.”

Pretty clever, huh, how the news release happens to omit the fact that Palin is the Republican vice presidential candidate. Maybe Ed Snider is a little ashamed at what he's trying to pull here. He should be. Do you think he's going to extend the same courtesy to the Democratic vice presidential hopeful, Joe Biden, who actually comes from a state where the Flyers have thousands of fans?
Since I'm a Ranger fan, I hope they trounce them and then go to Geno's and order a cheese steak in Spanish.

as a flyers fan i am not happy to have her dumb ass associated with anything involving philadelphia hockey. the only thing that can save the day is for some good old fashioned verbal abuse to be hurled her way. she is honestly an embarrassment to hockey moms everywhere. since 1967 this team has done next to nothing to piss me off more than this and i hope i am not the only fan that feels this way. if she only gets boo'd she should feel lucky because i have heard far worse things yelled at the rink chicks for not throwing teeshirts into our section.

In his statement to the legislative inquiry (which was supposed to remain confidential but promptly released to the press by the McCain campaign) Todd Palin admits that he'd been trying to get his trooper brother-in-law fired for years. But he insists, improbably, that that didn't have anything to do with the subsequent dismissal of the guy he and Gov. Palin were pressuring to fire him. That, and he too says, Walt Monegan, the Commissioner of Public Safety at the center of the story, was not fired but rather resigned.
In one of the odder parts of the deposition, he seems to have implied that two reasons Monegan was actually fired were for emailing the governor reports that she'd driven with her newborn son without a car seat and that he didn't have a state plane available enough for her trips.
For those of you keeping score, the Palins' purported rationales for firing Monegan are tellingly similar to those originally put forward for firing those US Attorneys -- vague and barely consequential complaints that no one ever seems to have mentioned before the press started asking questions, peppered with occasional defenses of the reasons for the firing which they claim aren't even the real reasons.
And oh yeah, he wasn't fired. He was reassigned but decided to quit.
With any luck the voters will spare the country from this intemperate, thuggish man.

I visit your site every day John, but I'm a Flyers fan, and that's probably the only point on which we differ. I was incredibly excited about the start of the season until I heard about this yesterday.
Hockey mom or not, I suspect she'll meet with a hostile response from the Philly fans who (as you may have heard) sometimes have more passion than sense.
This is the city that pelted the Buddhist monks the Beastie Boys brought to Lollapalooza as their opener, offstage with (in some cases full) water bottles.
I imagine the suburban fans will eat this shit up, there are still plenty of pockets of racism in PA, but Philadelphia is actually a relatively progressive city.
I know the NHL (not necessarily the Flyers) is desperate for publicity, which I imagine drove this stunt, but I'm dissapointed in a city and organization that I love.

The company I work for, Sandwich Cat inc. (under the name Village Restaurant and Catering) happens to be an "official caterer for the Philadelphia Flyers, Phantoms, and Soul" as the voice so proudly proclaims when you dial the number to the office. As such, he's got some nice season tickets he offers to free to some of his employees. I'll be abusing these to go to the game and add my voice to the legion of Philadelphia's finest: ordinary citizens who are complete jackasses and aren't afraid to hide it.
And then I will stop by Geno's, but I'll get my steak in English. And unlike Kerry, I'll go for the American cheese.
Somehow, my city was shallow enough to give a damn what he had on his cheese steak. Because that's real important.
Hockey fans are notoriously middle class folk who, you know, those that McCain rufuses to address at his debates. I don't think Sarah would have the balls to show up at such a venue -- if she does then she is truly more stupid than we all think (as if it can get any lower)

Snider is just another war mongering neo-conservative jewish boy who wants war, but was too cowardly to serve when it was his turn. Yes, little Ed used student deferments to escape the draft during Korea. Even with two children under two, my late father spent 10 months in brutal combat as a Marine in Korea.
