Frankie Goes To Hollywood

(Strong language/NSFW)

The Wrap:

Frank Luntz, the arch-conservative pollster known as the research hammer by which the Gingrich revolution came down hard on President Bill Clinton, wants to take over research for the entertainment industry. And you thought Arianna Huffington did a quick-switch job? “I want to replace Joe Farrell,” said Luntz, wandering the halls of the Milken Institute conference on Monday in Beverly Hills, where he was a featured speaker. Luntz clearly has a lot to learn in Hollywood -- including the fact that Farrell of National Research Group retired a number of years ago. But the pollster and Fox News analyst is serious about making his play. He's bought a home in Santa Monica and is already doing survey work for Universal’s marketing chief Adam Fogelson and speaking to producers about other projects.

Why would he give up pollstering in American politics -- where he has been so successful -- for the movies? Luntz, who sold his company, Luntz Research, to Omnicon in 2005, said he’s had enough of politics. “I’m tired of selling reality,” he said. “Reality sucks. It’s mean. Divisive. Negative. What Hollywood offers is a chance to create a new reality, in two hours time.”

Reality? Ha! Luntz wouldn't know reality if it hit him with a two-by-four. All Luntz has done in his pathetic sell-out, dumbed-down career is create a new reality for the sheep who watch Fox News to buy into.

Hollywood is a PERFECT location for Luntz. All fake, all surface and no substance behind the glitter.

He does know reality. How else could he work so hard to subvert it, if he couldn't recognize the source material?

The proper statement is not that he wouldn't know reality, but that he could never produce reality.

the duntz was completely unwatchable, and completely unconvincing, when he did those fux news "focus group" segments (but then so is everyone else on that network). now he's going to use all that skill and intuition to help hollyweird tailor it's messages and "products"?

oh goody...

Luntz wears a taupe, is a cheap ass. So my friend who use to work for him.

Another Bush aider and abettor hoping people with short memories will forget the damage his Goebbels style propaganda polls have caused the Nation over these last eight wretched years.

Luntz has as much personality as the dead thing on his head - great minds and all.

I've only watched his focus group thingies on Fox around election time, but I thought he stunk. My 7-yr old grandnephew could come up with better questions and follow-ups than he did. Plus his analysis was utterly useless....which means he'll fit right in with all the ditzheads in Hollywood.

Just one cog in the machine.
Obama had the same machine.
People sent to all the blogs to call anyone criticizing Obama a troll - a Clinton supporter - a racist.

Most of them are gone now.
They did their job.

Luntz was a salesman.

That's all we have now.
Salesmen.

Offering zero facts to support such ridiculous assertions. Name one single person in the Obama camp who had similar negative influence as Luntz. And to imply that's why Obama won is just stupid sour grapes. How about a recount...moron.

He's more than a stuffed shirt, he's an Orwellian whose hands are as dirty as all the war criminals.

here is an interview he did on Fresh Aire with Teri Gross (NPR). warning may cause nausea and dizziness.
I would not doubt that he is responsible for changing the acurate word torture into the repubes favorite phrase "enhanced interigation techniques" for the sole purpose of making something vile and illegal into something he perceives as more tolerable.
he helped bush co. see, us down the river.

ya...i was the guy who would call you to ask you questions about movies

its mind numbing work, and most of it has been outsourced

not exactly sure how luntz is gonna compete with those that have been in the biz for a long time

but i bet fox hires him...cuz they are idiots

it is that he is tired of having to fight with reality.

Who could blame him, being that reality seems to have an overwhelming liberal bias. Alas, I find it fascinating, since his current move completelly matches the conservative MO of fabricating their own reality.

...all those movie stars would close their copies of Camus and Sartre to argue against that point... ;-)

Easiest way to tell if a Starlet is angered by being called shallow: She starts carrying French Philosophy (see above) in her bag, and wrinkles her pretty, empty forehead over it at lunch....

Now if she were reading Neitsche, Sun Tzu (in the original Chinese), or JM Keynes I might be impressed......

He won't last long in Hollywood if he continues his current M/O... which has been to tell FOX viewers WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR.

Hollywood producers arent that stupid! That's why you find MORE DEMOCRATS there... they are smart... they have a much better understanding of the "human condition..." and they want their research to REFLECT HONEST REACTIONS to their material, not a PRE-PRESCRIBED RESULT. How else do you think they are able to fill movie theatre seats once in a while?

Conservatives in entertainment?

Unless they are attacking a group of helpless individuals on behalf of the corporate state - so that their brain-dead, knuckle-dragging base can feel alive for a moment, I don't see the connection.

Unless of course, he were to satiricize all of the conservatives and their idiocy he has been a part of for 20 years. That could work. What are the chances of a dumbass conservative experiencing self awareness?

Didn't think so.

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

and those are the ones just off the top of my head.

Hollywood could give a shit about red or blue. They're all about the green and Frankie the hair is enough of a sycophant to get along well in show business.

Luntz fabricates realities.
Filthy pollution becomes "clear skies".

Film is an important tool for propaganda.

So if a pollster asks me for my opinion on things, can I preemptively shout "Fuck you, Frank!"?

CnLfan's picture

Luntz fancies himself a world-class linguist, and he uses that skill to plant and propagate confusion, to obfuscate the truth. His deliberate and manipulative use of language, our most powerful tool for human interaction and progress, diminishes us all in a very real sense.

I don't know what this "Hollywood" thing is all about. Maybe he sees the writing on the wall and has to manufacture a gradual transition away from the radical right in order to maintain his credibility as he shops his services to the now powerful left. Maybe he's feeling pangs of conscience and wishes to impose a little, as he would say, @55holeness attenuation on himself.

From wikipedia:

In a January 9, 2007, interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Luntz redefined the term "Orwellian" in a positive sense, saying that if one reads Orwell's Essay On Language (presumably referring to Politics and the English Language), "To be 'Orwellian' is to speak with absolute clarity, to be succinct, to explain what the event is, to talk about what triggers something happening… and to do so without any pejorative whatsoever."

Luntz developed the doublespeak definition of "Orwellian"! How perfect is that?

Because the Wolverine movie is big pile of cat turd. Lutz just got the opinions of those that just seen the X-Men movies and not the ones that read the comic books. Because comic book readers are not grounded in reality or matter to the film's producers.

I'm sure Digby, who, like Luntz, also lives in Santa Monica, will be grateful for the compliment.

I'm sure hollywood readers are very grateful for the insult there. WTF?
