Gonzo Can't Find A Job

Gosh, I can't recall if anyone could have predicted this...

NYTimes (reg. req'd.)

Alberto R. Gonzales, like many others recently unemployed, has discovered how difficult it can be to find a new job. Mr. Gonzales, the former attorney general, who was forced to resign last year, has been unable to interest law firms in adding his name to their roster, Washington lawyers and his associates said in recent interviews.

He has, through friends, put out inquiries, they said, and has not found any takers. What makes Mr. Gonzales's case extraordinary is that former attorneys general, the government's chief lawyer, are typically highly sought.

A longtime loyalist to George W. Bush dating to their years together in Texas, Mr. Gonzales was once widely viewed as a strong candidate to be the first Hispanic-American nominated one day to the Supreme Court. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he carried an impressive personal story as the child of poor Mexican immigrants.

Despite those credentials, he left office last August with a frayed reputation over his role in the dismissal of several federal prosecutors and the truthfulness of his testimony about a secret eavesdropping program. He has had no full-time job since his resignation, and his principal income has come from giving a handful of talks at colleges and before private business groups.

"Maybe the passage of time will provide some opportunity for him," said one Washington lawyer who was aware of an inquiry to his firm from a Gonzales associate. "I wouldn't say 'rebuffed,' " said the lawyer, who asked his name not be used because the situation being described was uncomfortable for Mr. Gonzales. "I would say 'not taken up.'"

Well, unless he is collecting unemployment, I don't think he needs to worry about skewing his buddy's unemployment figures...

Nice to see karma biting him on the ass, though, isn't it?

Extreme right wing Phil Kline investigated by KCTV5

You may know of Phil Kline by his numerous appearances with Bill O'Reilly and his constant attacks on Planned Parenthood. You'd think he would have won his election against Paul Morrison because of all the free publicity, but he got defeated. Anyway, it looks like he's been caught being a crook and a liar.

The KC Blue Blog has more:

KCTV 5 Exclusive 8 month investigation into Johnson County DA Phil Kline has uncovered major news that is likely to force the DA to resign or be removed from office...read on

Here's more info on Kline....

The wrong choice for Attorney General

After Alberto Gonzales’ humiliating and painful tenure as the nation’s chief law-enforcement officer, I was beginning to get my hopes up about Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey.

Right off the bat on Wednesday, he rejected the infamous Bybee memo, and compared U.S. torture policies to Nazi Germany. The rest of the day was nearly as encouraging, with Mukasey vowing to end Justice Department “stonewalling,” and insisting he would resign if Bush tried to do something unconstitutional. No more partisan considerations in employment, Mukasey said. No more “unilateralism,” he promised.

Everyone was impressed, and said so. And then Day Two happened.

LA Times:

The Roll Call newspaper in Washington reported on its website this evening that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois intends to resign his House seat later this year.

The subscription-only site said Hastert, who had already announced he would not seek reelection in 2008, was calling friends and associates today and telling them of his decision. His early departure would create the need for a special election in his exurban Chicago district, possibly on Illinois' Feb. 5 presidential primary day.[..]

Three Republicans--Chris Lauzen, Jim Oberweis and Kevin Burns--are already vying for the party's nomination, while Bill Foster, a wealthy Democrat, appears to lead the waiting Democratic field.

Howie at DWT notes that there hasn't been a lot of speculation as to why Hastert is leaving....hmmm....In any event, there are an awful lot of Republicans lately reading the writing out of the wall...Kay Bailey Hutchinson has said she'll be leaving her seat early as well (to run for the Texas governorship).

CNN:

Sen. Larry Craig won't resign from the Senate while awaiting a judge's ruling on his effort to get a guilty plea withdrawn in a restroom sex sting, a source said Wednesday.

Sen. Larry Craig is seeking to overturn his guilty plea stemming from an airport bathroom sex sting.[..]

Craig had said he would resign from the Senate if he could not get the guilty plea overturned by September 30.

But Craig on Tuesday said he won't resign until "legal determinations" are made.[..]

A Republican source involved in discussions about the case said Craig has made it clear he wants to find a way to stay in office.

Well, Craig may be kicking and screaming to hold on to his Senate seat, but Rep. Terry Everett (R-AL) announced that he is retiring at the end of this term.

Audio of Craig's phone message. Is he finally out?

Yahoo:

The Republican senators expressed relief Thursday that embattled Sen. Larry Craig has signaled he is highly likely to surrender his seat within a few weeks rather than fight to complete his term. Craig's departure, perhaps as early as Oct. 1, would enable Republicans to sidestep one of the several ethics dilemmas they face, and avoid the embarrassment of dealing with a colleague who had been stripped of his committee leadership posts and urged to resign by party leaders.

Breaking: Republican Senator Larry Craig Resigns

msnbc-craig-resign.jpg Disgraced Republican Senator Larry Craig announced that he would resign from the Senate effective September 30th. Apologizing to his family, colleagues and constituents, Craig was somewhat humbled, yet remained defiant to the end. It should be noted that someone brilliantly chose to hold the presser at the historic Boise Train Station -- we sincerely hope the Senator used his bathroom at home before leaving to make his announcement...

Breaking: Senator Larry Craig Will Announce Resignation Tomorrow

craig-mugshotthumbnail.jpg AP Via Yahoo:

Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig will announce Saturday he will resign from the Senate amid a furor over his arrest and guilty plea in a police sex sting in an airport men's room, Republican officials said Friday.

Craig will hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. MDT and say that he will resign effective Sept. 30, three state GOP officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The announcement follows by just five days the disclosure that he had pleaded guilty Aug. 1 to a reduced misdemeanor charge arising out of his arrest June 11 at the Minneapolis airport.

The three-term Republican senator had maintained that he did nothing wrong except for making the guilty plea without consulting a lawyer. But he found almost no support among Republicans in his home state or Washington. Read more...

Former Clark County GOP Chair and newly elected Young Republican National Federation Chair Glenn Murphy is under investigation for criminal deviate conduct, a Class B felony, for allegedly engaging in oral sex with a sleeping victim. This is not his first run-in with the law for this kind of offense.Read the investigative report and a prior arrest for sexual battery in 1998 here: glennmurphy.pdf

WARNING: This is some pretty graphic stuff. Don't let the kiddies read it.

UPDATE: Murphy recently sent an e-mail telling friends in Florida about his decision to resign from the YRNF position for business reasons. Read more...

According to the police report the alleged victim is a man. The warning above should definitely be heeded, the report is extremely graphic. Murphy (no relation to me) was considered to be a rising star in the Indiana GOP...

Wolfowitz Asked To Resign

Hear the drumbeat getting louder?

wolfowitz1.jpg UPI:

An agency that oversees the World Bank is asking for the resignation of the bank's president, former deputy U.S. Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz.

In a document obtained by the Financial Times, the Independent Evaluation Group asked for Wolfowitz's immediate resignation, saying a continuation of his leadership will lead to "irreparable harm to worldwide efforts in poverty reduction and sustainable development."

The pressure for Wolfowitz to resign mounted last week, when 42 of the bank's senior former executives published an open letter urging his removal.

"There is only one way for Mr. Wolfowitz to further the mission of the bank: he must resign," the letter said.
