As one colleague put it about the Jeff Sessions nomination for Attorney General? "This is a damned disaster."
We're going to have a White Alabama good ol boy running the race relations of the United States Justice Department for four years. Trump asked Black people 'What the hell do you have to lose?' Now we know.
And the White beltway insiders at Morning Joe didn't seem too concerned either, imagine that. Turns out noted Islamophobe Ret. Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn as National Security Advisor is the "controversial" pick. And notice we're not talking about Bannon this morning. Nope... moving right along.....
The consensus among the well-employed White people on Morning Joe is, "Well he's a Senator and a colleague so after they 'rough him up a bit' for his earlier 'controversial' remarks he'll get confirmed."
And that's the real problem here. Sure Jeff Sessions is a bigot who has called an African-American man "boy" to his face, and labelled the NAACP "un-American." That never ever stopped the voters of Alabama (yeah) from electing and re-electing him to the US Senate. And once there, he's a colleague and a Beltway insider.
It's not a big deal that Trump is choosing him for AG, because it isn't a big deal that he has been a US Senator since 1996.
Everybody in Washington thinks it's okay for the South to elect token bigots to the national legislature, and then we're shocked they get a seat a the table to run the country's justice system.
Reaction to the Sessions pick has been swift:
Trump can expect an over-our-dead-bodies fight on this one. Stay tuned.
