Earle, Arkansas, has elected 18-year-old Jaylen Smith as the next mayor, making him the youngest Black mayor in the United States. On December 6th, residents cast their ballots and chose Smith as their next mayor.
"Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it's official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas… "It's Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas." I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up getting people to the polls," he wrote on Facebook. "I am truly grateful for you all."
Smith defeated Nemi Matthews Sr., who served as a street superintendent for 30 years, and he said that he and Jayden are friends and that their families have known each other for years, according to The Hill.
"No animosity, anything, for as me and Jaylen are concerned," Matthews said. "Everything has been cordial. If I can help him do anything, I'll do it, and likewise with him."
As it should be.
