I did not see this coming. Republicans usually like to stop progress. Lawmakers approved a bill to allow the use and possession of the hallucinogenic drug. Now, it goes to Gov. Gavin Newsom.
SFGate reports:
Interestingly, a trio of Republicans threw the bill a last-minute lifeline this week. It needed 41 votes to pass the California Assembly, where Democrats hold 62 of 80 seats. Forty Democrats backed the bill, and three Republicans — Bill Essayli, Heath Flora and Marie Waldron — ultimately voted in support, giving it the required tally, according to the state legislative website. It then passed its final procedural vote in the state Senate on Thursday.
Proposed by state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, the bill would put California on the cutting edge of the psychedelic drug reform movement, following states like Oregon and Colorado in removing criminal penalties for the use of some hallucinogenic drugs. It legalizes the cultivation, possession and use of some psychedelic drugs, including psilocybin, the primary active compound found in magic mushrooms; mescaline; and dimethyltryptamine, which is commonly referred to as DMT. The bill does not legalize the sale or transfer of the drugs between individuals.
The push to legalize magic mushrooms gained momentum as psilocybin could be a viable treatment for some types of depression. I could see that working. Magic mushrooms just made me laugh my ass off.
