Trump already gave a $12 billion bailout to farmers in 2025.
HOST: The Wall Street Journal editorial board says that the tariffs have raised the cost for American farmers through both their access to foreign markets and retaliation.
They say, quote, Mr. Trump's border taxes filter through supply chains to kill all kinds of parts and equipment, making it harder for farmers when they buy tractors, combines, harvesters, and planters.
Can you say that American farmers are better off today than before the tariffs?
GREER: I can because when we came into office, when President Trump came into office, the U.S. trade deficit in agricultural goods was enormous, and he has cut that in half in the past year and a half.
How has he done that?
He has opened up new markets.
Trade deficits are meaningless to every credible economist, but Demented Donald is obsessed with them.
Many farmers are cutting videos against Trump.
In 2024, the country's farming-dependent counties overwhelming went for Trump. But in the following year, farm bankruptcies spiked across much of the country, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
In an April 2026 survey of 974 farmers in 44 states commissioned by Amato Advisors and conducted by Farm Journal, 78% said machinery and other key costs, including fertilizer, fuel, seed and chemicals, were among their top three concerns, and 94% said the war with Iran was increasing those costs. A total of 55% said federal policies over the previous year had hurt their operations, compared with just 19% who said they had helped.
