On this day in 1995, Kathryn Bigelow and her ex-husband Jim Cameron released a film they collaborated on about the coming turn of the millennium that I'd summarize as prescient, grimy, and exhilarating. It's got a stacked cast that includes Angela Bassett, Ralph Fiennes, and Juliette Lewis. It's stayed in the low-to-mid 70s on Rotten Tomatoes for years, and its mix of police brutality, racial tension, surveillance, and technology-as-addiction still feels remarkably relevant, even if the plot occasionally buckles under its own melodrama, and the soundtrack features Skunk Anansie, Tricky, Lords of Acid, PJ Harvey (performed by Juliette Lewis), Prong (with Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek), and Peter Gabriel with Deep Forest. It also includes music by Me Phi Me and a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love.”
