Gov. Rick Perry and the Secessionists

We blew the lid off of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's outrageous and treasonous statements regarding the secession of Texas from the union.

All the insane talk coming from the Limbaugh National Convention is spreading into the fabric of the entire GOP. Listen to Texas Gov. Rick Perry say:

Perry: Texas is a unique place. When we came into the Union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that.

We got a great Union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it, but if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what may come out of that.

Media Matters recently released some very disturbing information about Perry:

Media Matters Action Network released a memo outlining Texas Governor Rick Perry's ties to a Texas secessionist group whose former leaders are responsible for numerous acts of domestic terrorism. "From bomb threats, to kidnapping, to planning attacks using biological weapons, the Texas Nationalist Movement has a long violent history that cannot be ignored," Media Matters Action Network Managing Director Ari Rabin-Havt said. "Governor Perry should be ashamed of his association with these domestic terrorists."..read on

Very disturbing indeed.

John Sharp is running in Texas against Perry and although I don't know much about him, he's not taking Perry's secessionist comments lightly.

During WWII my father was shot in defense of the greatest country on earth and I proudly wore the uniform of a United States Army Reserve officer. So I'm offended when it become acceptable for anybody to talk about Texas leaving the Union.

"A man sometimes starts up a patriot, only by disseminating discontent, and propagating reports of secret influence, of dangerous counsels, of violated rights, and encroaching usurpation. This practice is no certain note of patriotism. To instigate the populace with rage beyond the provocation, is to suspend publick happiness, if not to destroy it. He is no lover of his country, that unnecessarily disturbs its peace. Few errours and few faults of government, can justify an appeal to the rabble; who ought not to judge of what they cannot understand, and whose opinions are not propagated by reason, but caught by contagion." - Samuel Johnson

I'm Sure Washington DC is more than little anxious to fill your seat at the Union's table.

And then we wouldn't have to listen to those people that whine that DC and/or Puerto Rico shouldn't be allowed to become states because it would mess up our pretty flag to add more stars.

Texas gets to fend of the Meskins all by themselves, since they'll be an independent sovereign nation. Of course, as a foreign country, I'm sure Governor Goodhair (Oh, Molly Ivins, I miss you - gone far too soon!) will be begging to Washington for financial aid. Won't happen, but it'd be fun to watch! Pity we couldn't convince Mexico to take them back ten years ago when Texas already had an up-and-coming king.

Well for one secession is not treason, it was common in the 1800's till Lincoln decided to remove states of their rights, Lincoln himself said the Civil war was about "saving the union" not Slavery, I could get quotes of him saying that too but really I do not have time now. Just wanted to get a post in early.

Secondly There are a lot of idiots at the teaparties but the most of them are Genuine people who are NOT concerned about Obama's race, they hate Repubs too. Most of them are angry because of the bailouts and the bankers robbing people. The FED just gave out 12.8 trillion of your dollars in the past 6 to 9 months off balance sheet. 2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

3. Defense Industry. (we have over 65% of it) The term "Don't mess with Texas," will take on a whole new meaning.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years.

5. Natural Gas - We have all we need, too bad those northern states don't.

6. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications: Small places like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola,Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, Etc, Etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Health Centers - We have the largest research centers for Cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world and other large health planning centers.

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: UT Texas, A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston, Baylor, UNT, Texas Women's University, Ivy grows better in the south anyway

9. We have a ready supply of workers. (just open the border when we need some more)

10. We have control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. We don't have an army but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an army in 24 hours if we need it. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over a couple Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables and lets not forget seafood from the gulf. And everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good.

13. We have our own independent power grid.

14. We have our own industrial port

While secession is wrong and the product of low IQs and the maturbatory fantasies of closet cases Ricky Perry and Chuck Norris. We are not all of a type here and do contribute a LOT to the US. For those of you screeching "good riddance" and secede already, you sound just like the goopers when they talk about California. Out of the lower 48, CA and TX stand the best chances of surviving as separate countries. But the US is too connected nowadays for anything like that to succeed. Please stop continuing to paint with such a broad brush, that's the right wing's job.

Just pointing out that the US would lose. Texas would have a hard time of it, but it would either survive or get its ass kicked. Probably the latter.

mudshark's picture

No disrespect , But that's like saying Oregon could fight the union.
Never gonna happen

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Liberalicious's picture
Oh

I don't think it would happen. It's more crybaby bluffing from the right-whiners. Just looking as the scenario. The US is not what is was before the Civil War, sorry the "War of Northern Aggression" ;).
I mean, nationals roads, instant communications, satellites, internet, television, etc. The country is too tied together now. It's heading that way globally too. Not as much in a world government way, but it's increasing difficult to isolate yourself from a world so tied together. North Korea tries, but they just come off as some kind of whiny bratty kid.

Taarak's picture

I don't think it will happen either - at least not the same way. This is not the 19th Century, and Obama is not Buchanan.

I do think I could come up with a few hypotheticals where the Federal Gov is weakened to the point of ineffectiveness and polarization creates an opportunity for revolt.

Liberalicious's picture

Now that I think of it...I don't think there are many, if any, missile silos here. That could be a little bit of a disadvantage.

Yes that was pretty much my point. we are pretty self sufficient. My opinion about Texas leaving the union is that I don't believe it would ever happen. The U.S. government would not let that happen for that to happen would mean revolution. In fact the implications are too complicated for me to process. The fact that state governments not just Texas BTW are invoking the 10th amendment and the talk of Secession by the governor of any state in anything but a joking manner is an indicator that something is wrong. Though it may be "outrageous" I do not believe it is treasonous Rick Perry's comments. To the comments that it is un-American I just have to ask how.

JustMyWords's picture

So much of what you've cited for Texas as proof of their independence are industries dependent on US tax dollars. In the unlikely event that any state were to secede, I think it would be a safe assumption that all taxpayer supported entities would be removed.

Liberalicious's picture

Why NASA is scattered around the country is a question to me.

Trantorian's picture

The same reason that all of our defense industry is scattered. It makes every state beholden to them. NASA was an outgrowth of the military. All of the early rockets (Redstone, Atlas, Vanguard) were taken from military missile programs.

The Union in its present form will not last forever. Nothing ever does. Societies evolve, civilizations adapt, and events external and internal force change. Change is not only inevitable, it is necessary.

The question becomes, will the Union survive for the next 400 years and adapt as needed, or will it disintegrate over the next 20? Both are very real possibilities.

I’ve long found it fascinating the legal argument the South had during the Civil War. I always thought the primary reason for the fight in the first place was their ability to secede, and I’m not sure they were wrong. That isn’t to say they were right either, just that they had a good argument. (To be clear, they were, of course, wrong on the secondary but most notable issue of slavery.)

We fought, and the Union survived. It is now a very strong Union, but weakening. The fabric of our country is being stressed. Not yet to the breaking point, but more so than at any time since the Civil War.

What Robby is proposing may seem absurd today, but the sentiment is not new. It may not be so absurd in the coming years – in our lifetime. In the end, what happens will be up to us. No foreign invaders will destroy what we have built.

Historically, we are a great experiment. We deserve to continue as a nation – if we can come together and not tear the fabric apart.

Then we'll go through another civil war. Which won't be pretty.
I doubt people will be so forgiving after this one.

Rick Perry & John Sharp were classmates at Texas A&M. They have a long history together. Sharp was State Comptroller at one time, and unsuccessfully ran for Lt. Governor (Perry's former position) and Senator.

Sharp is a centrist/moderate, who would almost be a right-winger in other areas of the country.

Texas did not reserve the right to secede when it rejoined the Union (The Civil War settled that!), but it did retain the right to be able to divide into 5 states. I doubt that would ever happen, as Texans are too proud about being so big. But imagine it--that would mean 10 senators from the same area instead of 2...

Perry is now the longest-serving Tx Gov, and faces a primary battle with Kay Bailey Hutchison. Realistically, here in TX, whoever wins that primary will become Guv, as the Dems lost their cojones after Ann Richards lost to Dumbyah as Gov, and the GOPigs took over every statewide office.

Texas founders so hated the idea of a strong central government, that the governorship was designed to be a titular head of state, with all activity coming from a biannual legislature, and the Lt. Governor sets the agenda for the legislature. They wanted most government to be from local city, town and county legislatures.

Hence the talk all the time in Westerns of homesteaders riding to the county seat.

Since then there has been a transference of power from local governments to Austin, and occassional calls for strong mayors and strong governors (but only when they're republican.)

I'll vote for Sharp if he's the nominee against Perry or Hutchison but we can do better.

Not only is there the Federal Supremacy Clause of Article VI of the Constitution against state activities that go as far as secession, but also there was a required vote during Reconstruction to reenter the Union.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

It came in by treaty and it came in legally, unlike the Hawaiian Islands, which was invaded. So Texans can certainly leave if they wish. Nothing in the U.S. constitution prevents it. The U.S. loses nothing..... literally. Take Oklahoma with you as a going away present.

Liberalicious's picture

Does forbid secession, they had a little disagreement about that back in the 1860s I think. Made some movies about it and everything. Check out Netflix.

Texas v White:
"...the court further held that the Constitution did not permit states to secede from the United States, and that the ordinances of secession, and all the acts of the legislatures within seceding states intended to give effect to such ordinances, were "absolutely null"."

Knows all this stuff. Give it some time. He'll post all the info when he comes back.

He did the other day. He may not want to do it again. It's kinda redundant.

I had to double-check, but that was a Supreme Court case you cited, and according to Article III, the Supreme Court enforces treaties with foreign countries, which Texas would be if it could successfully secede, so this case is pretty binding.

Additionally there would be border concerns with the surrounding states of Arkansas and Oklahoma if they felt they were losing valuable trade routes, and didn't want to pay foreign taxes and tariffs, and possibly currency exchanges to maintain regular business.

Of course we'd have to Shepardize that case to see if it hasn't been overturned, and for that one needs access to a law library.

The problem is half of what's in the law libraries of Texas are Guns & Ammo, Fish and Tackle, and Soldier of Fortune.

(Just kiddin'.)

According to what I've read was the deal-maker was Congress requiring the former Confederate states to vote for the XIII amendment.

According to:

http://www.laits.utexas.edu/txp_media/html/co...

Texas actually voted for the Amendment XIII twice. They held that the amendment was implicitly adopted in the Constitutional Convention of 1866, and then formerly ratified in February 18th, 1870.

So by initially joining the Union in 1845 and then voting essentially twice for the XIII amendment, which together with Article VI emphasized federal supremacy, there really is no case for seceeding.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

When someone suggests dropping "under God" from the Pledge of Alliegance but are OK with ignoring the next word "indivisable", and really come undone when progressives want "liberty and justice for all" to be enforced.

Why is that?

Oh, I forgot--they're all hypocrites..

On the upside, blue has bulletproof cloture vote w/o Texas, goopers lose net 9 congressional seats, blues pick up most of the electoral seats, and we lose some of the biggest pricks in politics. The down side? Losing Austin. Screw the rest.

If someone had told me back in the 70's when I was in high school learning my American History--that in 2009 elected government officials would actually talk about secession and apparently be serious about it, I would have thought it impossible. And if I had read comments from citizens of Texas (Robby) enumerating all the ways they could secede without difficulty I would have wondered what people were smoking. (OK...maybe not. Almost everyone was smoking something, then.)All I know, is that this country gets weirder and weirder every day and it seems as if we are hell-bent on self-destruction. As a history teacher, I gotta ask--why bother teaching it if no one pays any attention? And I am NOT talking about kids in school now. I'm talking about the idiots running things.

I am ok with being singled out but you know the bulk of posters were citing all the ways they would kick our asses if we tried. I just put the reasons why not in order.

I'm a Packer fan. When the HELL is Texas leaving the Union and why don't they do it sooner. Speaking of Sooners, I know they sure as HELL won't mind the University of Texas leaving the Big 12, since they will no longer qualify to be part of the NCAA. As for Me, I am so damned tired of the Cowboys calling THEMSELVES America's Team. I will gladly drive over to Dallas to pick up the Lombardi Trophies since the Cowboys today belong the the National Football League, and of course, they won't qualify any more. So screw Texas, and Texans. Let them leave. Just make it before pre-season kickoff.
Oh, and WE Loyal Americans want all of OUR military weapons back, also. Texas can talk to the 110 million Mexicans about their security, since I've heard a few of them talking about taking Texas back by force this week. Good luck to the Mexicans. I hope they turn over these Texas secessionists to their drug cartels for re-education and training. Just get them out of the United States, as fast as possible, if that's what they want.

Robby's picture

Get one thing straight. We need Oklahoma to stay right where they are because their sucking is what keeps Texas from falling into the gulf.

And then there are the sane people, like my family. ;)

I feel bad for all the progressive Texans who post here and have to put up with the GOOPers.

I've never seen change without a fire

I think, deep down, you all love each other (cuz you're Americans). But Bush (and a few other whackoes) were elected there, so...

The USA is not the country it once was, especially the best country in the world, that train has left the station. You have torturers, you have Bush, you have Cheney, all sociopaths who screwed you (the normal people) up the you know what.

So that Russian guy was right: we can watch for parts to start spinning off soon?

Wow

Edwin I had forgot about that. He said five different regions if i remember correct. You guys can have Oklahoma.

I'm a Canadian, who lives in Korea (so I don't have firsthand knowledge of the US these days, but I did grow up on the border-- Niagara Falls), but I remember "little" things I find interesting, sometimes for years and years.

No it is not the country it once was. What country in the world do you think deserving of that title then? I mean it is still pretty damn great from where I am standing.

You know, I think KKKarl Rove has a hand in this. I had never heard all this red state/blue state stuff before. Sure Americans had their differences, but you always seemed to work them out. Once Bush took over, they spun this red state/blue state stuff, and pitted you against each other for political reasons. Maybe it's some Naomi Klein Shock Doctrine at work.

That Media Matters article gives me hope that Texas might really be able to pull this off. Great! Get the hell outta heah, Texas! Don't let the doorknob hit ya where the dog shoulda bit ya.

My god. Don't worry bonsai. If we do "pull it off" We would not come crawling back. We would cut off our right arm first. Looking back is a bad habit.

Well according to this case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_v._White

It was ruled they cannot do it. But as far as I'm concerned they can not let the door hit them on the arse on the way out. Just my never humble, "I hate Texas", opinion.
