One of the oldest dog whistles in the GOP is using code words like “criminals,” “thugs” and “urban poor” to refer to blacks. In the Old South, coming up with ways to disparage blacks without coming out and saying you are has become something of an art form in itself — a means of personal expression in an era well past the acceptance of overt racism. And Pat Garafolo is a Picasso among pre-schoolers. Sort of.
