Tonight in the Music Club I'd like to wish a happy birthday to my lovely lady and partner in crime by dropping a Detroit soul dance party winner written and recorded by her father Dusty Wilson.
"Can't Do Without You" didn't do much sales wise when it released in 1965 but has a been a standard for Northern Soul buffs for years and was introduced to an even larger audience when the Detroit Cobras covered it on their 1998 debut album Mink, Rabbit or Rat. Since then the original version has appeared on a bunch of compilations of varying legitimacy.
Dusty passed away years ago so he never got to see how much the song is beloved or how it, along with the other singles he released back then, is on a lot of record collectors want lists. And due to those legendary tales of fast talking record label folks, no royalties of any sort have ever been seen. We still get to groove to the sound none the less.
