In a totally predictable move, the Supreme Court has decided that guns have more rights than living human beings. The opinion related to a challenge to a federal ban on bump stacks that was implemented following a 2017 mass shooting that killed 58 people at an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas. Felon Donald Trump banned the bump stock feature. Bump stocks allow a shooter to turn a semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic one that can shoot HUNDREDS of rounds a minute. Exactly as the framers intended when they wrote the 2nd Amendment.
Justice Clarence Harlan Crow Thomas wrote the 6-3 opinion, with the entire Trump/MAGA wing leaning into mass shootings and the 3 liberal justices valuing human life more,
In his craven opinion, Crow Thomas wrote:
“A bump stock does not convert a semiautomatic rifle into a machinegun any more than a shooter with a lightning-fast trigger finger does. Even with a bump stock, a semiautomatic rifle will fire only one shot for every ‘function of the trigger.’”
Justice Sotomayor wrote a scathing dissent, which was joined by the court’s other two liberal justices, bluntly (and truthfully) stating that the ruling “will have deadly consequences.” Further, it “hamstrings the Government’s efforts to keep machineguns from gunmen like the Las Vegas shooter.” She went on to say “when I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck...A bump-stock-equipped semiautomatic rifle fires ‘automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.’ Because I, like Congress, call that a machinegun, I respectfully dissent.”
Gun control advocacy groups were outraged, but not surprised. Our government, and specifically the Supreme Court, has shown that it prioritizes money over guns and guns over people. Women are the lowest of their priorities.
Brady United stated the fact as clearly as possible: “Bump stocks essentially turn semi-automatic weapons into machine guns. Weapons of war should have no place in our communities.” Everytown for Gun Safety stated that the Supreme Court “has put countless lives in danger.” They are both right.
The NRA is ecstatic because their clients can go out and commit mass murder even more efficiently.
