Republicans are ALL FOR AGGRESSIVE ICE DEPORTATIONS POOLICIES AND ENFORCEMENT... until, oh my gosh, that great policy that they love so much for everyone else...affects (gasp) them! Then they are very, very upset.
I mean, the FO in FAFO is no stronger than when a loud Republican gets in front of a journalist and starts sharing their personal story of how ICE is actually not great. And they have zero reflection to see how insanely ironic IT IS.
Well, the FO part is hitting very Republican Paul LePage, former Maine Governor, and current candidate for a House seat. Did I mention that border safety is one of the central issues of his campaign?
The Washington Post is reporting that Trump loving and "staunch[ly] conservative" LePage said on Monday that his son's father-in-law, who is in the country LEGALLY and not a criminal, is being deported “because he came from a country that’s not the liking to certain people in Washington. That’s not right. He has a work permit. He should be allowed to stay.”
OH REALLY.
Tens of thousands of people exactly like his family member are here under the same circumstances...and they have faced deportation to third-party countries with no way out, or even worse, CECOT, where they are sure to die.
Unsurprisingly, LePage STILL supports ICE's immigration crackdown and even talked about it just this week. But he wants enforcement to be more "targeted", focusing more on people who came here illegally.
He said: “They have a job to do. Now, would I go after everybody that’s here, that have work permits and have been here for decades? Probably not. I’d probably go for people in the gangs and the criminals.”
He fails to understand that for ICE (and Donald Trump) it does not matter one bit what the background of the person is. It is all about where they were born and the color of their skin. They are a body. They are a number. They are a way to hit a daily quota. They are not viewed as human.
Congrats, Paul LePage. You played yourself.
