Cotton Club - 2010 - further evidence Shoegaze never left the building.

Back to digging around the outer recesses of MySpace tonight. I'll admit, MySpace isn't making it very easy to just point and browse without being barraged by a blizzard of crap top-40 bands every remaining record company in the country is plugging in lieu of hounding you on mainstream radio with (which you've been trying to avoid anyway, right?).

Ever since News Corp bought MySpace the quality, innovation and what made it a treasure trove of interesting discoveries is long gone, having been replaced by the theory of "them with the biggest checkbook wins". By all accounts, they are dying a slow agonizing death - the kind of death brought on by huge infusions of incompetence. Can't say I feel terribly sorry for them, but I do feel sorry for the mountain of bands getting screwed in the process. Another useful avenue of getting your stuff out is going by the wayside.

But discoveries are still possible, usually by employing the "six degrees of separation" rule of thumb and going after friends of friends of friends you first discovered the years before the News Corp buyout.

One of those bands is a Shoegaze/Alternative/Psych outfit with the somewhat unlikely name Cotton Club. Regardless of the name, the band is quite good. They come from Lille France and have been plugging and gigging around since 2006. Tonights track, The Right Moment comes from their latest ep, Between Drones And Daisies which came out in October 2009. They've been sticking pretty much close to home as far as live dates go, with two upcoming gigs in Paris starting on the 15th of January.

Despite the commercial onslaught attempting to drown out new independent and unsigned talent, there is still stuff around. And if you can support it, we'll all be better off for it.

'Nuff said. Check out the band.
