Open Thread: 50th Anniversary of the Peace Sign

Democracy Now, via Street Prophets, h/t Rain:

...the peace sign turns fifty years old today. Over the past five decades the peace sign has become one of the world’s enduring icons. The original peace sign was developed in 1958 by a British textile designer and conscientious objector named Gerald Holtom. He created the symbol by combining the semaphore letters N and D, for nuclear disarmament. On Feb. 21, 1958 the symbol was accepted by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. The symbol soon began to be used in anti-nuclear protests across Britain and then spread across the globe.

Isn't a pretzel similar?

now this is the REAL beginning of the end of regressive ideology... and the beginning of the REAL war for the survival of our species... and the beginning of the kumbaya rhetoric obama's learned to effectively orate and hillary's been visciously lambasted for acting to end...

oh... and frist ;-)

damn... missed it by that much

I'm 50.Me Likey.
It's funny what a symbol can do for a society.
Truer now than it's ever been.

It looks like one of our $1.2 billion dollar investments might have gone down since it's being reported that a B-2 Stealth bomber has crashed (with no loss of life). I haven't seen CNN carry it yet but if it's completely accurate then that would be the third crash in as many days.

Sorry to disappoint.

you didn't disappoint Ron.
in fact, why don't we send a case of pretzels to the Preznit.I hear he likes them.

where did the peace sign come from?

We would have to send a case of beer too. I don't want him drunk and pushing buttons.

it symbolizes one side of the culture war and the dollar sign is the other side.

ok,I read the post about who came up with the peace sign.

In the summer of 1969 my 17 year old brother and I were painting the white trim on my parents two story house. We went up on to the roof and painted a white peace sign that was 10 feet in diameter on their dark green roof. It was there for at least 12 years until they replaced the roof. Our mom was upset (what would the neighbors think?). Our dad was kind of amused and said that you could see it from a plane when they came into Ohare airport. (He flew a lot as a salesman.)

Fifty Years After the ‘Peace Sign,’ Designers Agree on the ‘War Sign’

http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=1521

I remember the bumperstickers in the late Vietnam years referring to the peace sign as the 'footprint of the American chicken'. There were 18%ers back then too.

Don please, that was cruel. Don't you have some small animals you could torture?

I'm trying to think of a way (other than painting) to get a peace sign on my roof. I live along one of the main roads from St Paul to the airport that the GOPers are going to have to use during their convention here. My roof is very visible from that road. Someone else in the neighborhood has an 8' diameter sign made with lights. I may have to model mine after theirs...

The peace sign would be meaningless if it weren't for war.

Let the Nuremberg trials begin.

60 Minutes is also going to have a story on Gov. Siegelman. That's a story that has been avoided by a lot of big news outlets. That should be interesting too.

Sounds like Ethanol was a big waste of time. Making fuel out of our food? Amount of energy it takes to convert etc.
Willie Nelson is saying Biodiesel, Wind, and Solar are the way to go. I trust him.
Of course I'd like to see hemp legalized so we could use that as a fuel as well among other things.

My biggest gripe is that the symbol... is not an original design...

Oddly enough it is found in the ancient world and it is representative of the tree of life..

Today we use the same symbol... and we use it upside down,

Symbology is very importaint.. more importaint then most give credit for it.. or even think about it..

However.. Think about it.. for 50 years we have been using the ancient symbol of LIFE ... Upside down... as a PEACE symbol...

And it has been SOOOO Fucking Effective hasn't it????!!!!

Wake up people...

Turn it the other way and I bet the results will be miraculous..

It has to start sometime...

Just caught a portion of the Tonight Show on the tube (PST) during a channel surf and there he was...Billo, the loofah specialist, spewing bullshit. He said he has no favorite choice for next prez and that his job is to make sure everyone behaves. Yeah Billo, everyone needs to behave except you. What a bloviating buffoon!!

Thankfully, Herbie Hancock followed as the musical act and that helped wipe a little of the airwave slime that Billo had left hanging in the air.

“Shorter lists are funnier” generally holds true, and very well may re the McList. C&L’ers are diverse and eclectic, and I’ve enjoyed many lols, LOLs, LOL!s and Ha ha’s here. I’m reluctant to exclude any McEntry, ’cause they’re all funny/pointed/cathartic to varying degrees, and the sheer length of the entire list has a humorous quality of its own.
We are also generating denigrating McMemes, some of which may be useful, in a memie sort of way. The thuglicontards are very aware of the usefulness of denigrating memes, and it won’t hurt to put out a few of our own.
That being said, a Top 11, Dirty Dozen, etc. are considerations, for those (myself included, usually) who like things condensed to essentials.

How Bushco attacked the UN and took out its best advocate:

And here’s something, that despite predicating the war on a link between Saddam Hussein and terrorism, a link between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda and 9/11, as Bush did, there was no preparedness done to respond to terrorist attacks in Iraq. In other words, if you’re going to predicate the war on a link with terrorism, you would think that operationally you would prepare your troops to deal with al-Qaeda attacks on civilian targets. No preparation whatsoever.

So, as Sergio [VIEIRA DE MELLO], this person who’s given his life to trying to enhance dignity, you know, and trying to mend broken places, effectively died under the rubble like a refugee,

the troops—heroic individual acts by individual Americans who just ran to the scene and tried to improvise, but ultimately, when it can to lifting the rubble from over him, a lady’s handbag was used, literally one of those basket handbags that had been plucked out of one of the offices. There were no stretchers, so they had to use curtains from the Canal Hotel windows and a curtain rope as a kind of amateur pulley system.

So, the most powerful military in the history of mankind is reduced to a woman’s handbag, a curtain rope and a curtain to try to save the most valuable civil servant that the UN has ever offered."-- Samantha Power, recounting the Bushco carnage (without making that analysis).

http://www.democracynow.org/2008/2/22/samantha_power_on_chasing_the_flame

Preparation, what the Republicans say they are good for. Bushco didn't seem to care that a truck full of LOOTED high-explosives from the Al-Qaqaa munitions dumps -- which Bushco completely failed to guard (or respond to UNDOUBTED satellite intell on the 50 ton trucks going out of there for a month) -- could just be driven to the side of the UN building, and blown up.

Suicide bomber LOADING ZONE sign. Al Qaeda is in Iraq, so that's why Bushco protected the UN building from terrorist attack.

Oh wait, Bushco supplied ZERO protection to the UN complex. What a goddamned shock.

Canadian Parliamentarians threatened with extortion by top Army General.

"Because we are, in the eyes of the Taliban, in a window of extreme vulnerability."

"Gen. Hillier also said that once there is a decision to extend the mission, parliamentarians should vote "overwhelmingly" to support the troops."

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080223.whillierpape...

Samantha Power, [is] Professor of Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy, based at Harvard University’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.

Her new book is called Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World.

After the UN truck bombing, CENTCOM announced that it had caught 20 Al Qaeda terrorists at the border, and that they had confessed.

A week later, CENTCOM said that what they had was two Iraqis, one of the a kid. They said that they didn't think either of them was involved.

They did this same stuff to the troops, and to the population. Absolute careless disregard for human rights, for international law, for the United Nations, and the lives of activists and anyone that opposed them on the ground in their Oil HQ, Baghdad branch.

i hate gen. hillier. he's always sticking his face in politics. get the fuck out, you're not a politician. i actually support the extension of canadian forces in kandahar, for the reasons discussed and outlined in parliament. i actually agree with harper that if canada wants to be taken seriously on the world stage, we have to show serious commitments. but then gen hillier comes in and throws out all this noneness and fear mongering and faux patriotism. people will think thats the kind of rhetoric that got the extension, when he came very late into the debate and it was already virtually decided without that crap.

"support the troops" is irrelevant, its about supporting the mission and cause. which, given the liberal amendments to the extension, i can comfortably say i do support. (frankly i'm impressed with the tone of the canadian parliament lately, the minority is actually working together, it may just be historic that a minority government has lasted this long without falling - and still get as much done as the current government has)

i'm visiting my home town right now in the ottawa valley near the petawawa military base and the town actually has a big banner across the bridge that says "WE SUPPORT THE TROOPS". i can't believe how american talking points have made thier way here.

Quiet Burp @ 25:

The peace sign would be meaningless if it weren’t for war.
And love would be meaningless if it weren't for hate! :-)

Peace/love would be meaningless without knowledge of war/hate.

The unfortunate things is we know the downside full well, but as a people continue to go there.

Pease Politics or the Audacity of Hope not talked about.

We all crave Pease, its serenity, and its bliss; however, the passion in power today as in anytime in history attracts a certain life lust, which spans a human dynamism of sexuality that could be argued is the real truth working in parallel to the divine understanding we all seek. Hence what do we have, Race Integration, yet, Ethnic Sovereignty, Now Individual Rights, were history once looked at life in an on going living scale sliding between Piety and Pagan? Or called War and Pease in the life continuum has to deal with the new experiment called the Constitution that does stretch to individual freedoms.

So, what the hell am I saying? Jumping through a lot of racial logic to make a point of failed reciprocity Obama will have a burden to work at, a change we could believe in “”?”” Most certainly should have a question mark at the end of those little political signs.

Our forefather introduced the concept of the separation of church and state, but totally dismissed the ideal of separation of sex and politics. Likely because of that Dynamism of slavery known through the ages exposes a sexual gradient that transcends to manifest an extraordinary random balance in shades of skin color, eye color, vocal tones, a cultural clock connecting perhaps an unknown source of power that resonates the public wondering if good or evil. As an ingredient that plays in a sliding scale of contemporary contextual debate were bad can be convinced to be good and good can be convinced to be bad, were War and Pease in an on going interplay lead and lag both changing places in time. The pace is quickening for we have the Media.

However, with this thing called a Constitution, Americans find themselves needing to line up Good with Good and Bad with Bad for the simple remedy of what looks ass backwards and corrupt as hell right now to figure a way to straighten it out. Simple how do we get rid of the ghetto and blight to transform it to a garden where any color can live in. Attractive enough for whites to go to Negro community as well as whites not to reject the Negro is still the problem.

To rain on the parade of Black History month is not my intention, But, I have a dream too, so why doesn’t my dream get some attention? Is being white doesn’t count as much as a American Negro dream in the well spoken words of all men are created equal. Well, all men are created equal, then my dreams should be just as well to count in the march gathering at great monuments and savored fine gardens designed by inspirational minds and created with sweat reflecting the possible perfection, and order in the environment. Far from the Ghetto where great works have space to take, but have been ignored to leave a trail that seems there is always something that needs to be cleaned up. Iraq is an out rage and the best extreme pitiful example of the current disgusting leadership.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army has turned to private contractors to supply translators and analysts for Arabic and other languages in Iraq as well as other regional states.
The military has launched a five-year project meant to embed thousands of Iraqi translators into U.S. ground force units in Iraq.

The prime beneficiary of the project has been Global Linguist Solutions, based in Falls Church, Va. GLS, a joint venture of DynCorp International and McNeil Technologies, which has won a contract with a maximum value of $4.6 billion through 2013.

Ken Mitchell @ 47:

And the neocons told me that the peace sign was a broken cross?

That interpretation has been around for decades, long before neocons/PNAC.

Peace sign?

I though that was the Mercedes logo.

RHM's blog

I remember my first exposure to that sign as a freshman at Michigan. The American Humanist Society was organising a "Ban The Bomb" demonstration in D.C. and I signed up ( there were women going). To this day I thought that sign was connected to that group. My first demonstration and it had a profound effect on me that has lasted decades. (and no I didnt hook up, as they say today.....)

Speaking of peace, its sort of sad that we seem not to be able ot find such in any human endeavor these days. Our violence is endemic and in every facet of our culture. Just listening to our political discourse these days gives me hives.....Noone thinks it enough to support their candidate, they must denigrate the other one....so sad, so silly, so dangerous.

Ron @ 32:

Interesting how the Obama/Clinton camps are attempting to shellac the other with "ties to radicals."

This could get messy, however Obama will suffer less damage after people recall it was Hillary's hoped-to-be "first hubby" who, as president, had pardoned Susan L. Rosenberg.

An unusual combination of New York political and law enforcement leaders have condemned former President Bill Clinton's pardon of Susan L. Rosenberg, a one-time member of the Weather Underground terrorist group who was charged in the notorious 1981 Brink's robbery in Rockland County that left a guard and two police officers dead.
//
Ms. Rosenberg served 16 years in jail after she was found with a companion in New Jersey in 1984 unloading 740 pounds of dynamite and weapons, including a submachine gun, from a car. She admitted her role in the New Jersey case, in which she had planned to supply others with explosives for politically motivated bombings.

At the time of her arrest, she was wanted on charges related to the 1981 armed robbery of a Brink's armored car in Nanuet, N.Y., a holdup that was supposed to raise money for the Weather Underground and other radical groups. But Ms. Rosenberg denied any involvement in the Brink's robbery and was never tried on those charges, because Mr. Giuliani, then the United States attorney in Manhattan, indicated that given her 58-year sentence on the New Jersey weapons charges, there was no need to proceed with that case.

Weather Underground adherents thought they were "waging peace," but are a classic example of "becoming what you despise" when the ends are allowed to justify the means.

this is off topic, but an open thread means an open thread, i believe. so here 'tis. i just received an email from "the Pen" where it sounds like public opinion and the evidence is demanding that Pelosi put impeachment back on the table. I quote, "
The Pelosi primary challenge is San Francisco, the one and only thing
that will actually put impeachment back on the table, is now a
reality. This TV spot, calling on all constituents of the CA 8th
district to rally once a week in front of Nancy Pelosi's district
office, started running on MSNBC Cable TV in San Francisco today in
heavy rotation."

This sounds to me an awful lot like she took impeachment off the table when she took office and now it's time for us all to play nice-nice and ask her if, with all the support she would garner in finally going after impeachment, would she not consider that option now. public opinion would be in her corner now. it would be a great career move.

well, i say, screw that. let's go after her first. find someone with enough initiative and courage to do that which should have been done months ago. i'm sick of the apologists for pelosi who give a myriad of excuses of why she was right to take it off the table. that's bull and anyone who stands along side her needs to go down with her. she's no better than elmer fudd opportunist Joe Lieberman, and her supporters and any who oppose a full on impeachment hearing before this scum leaves office scot free needs to go down with the stinking crooked ship. Bush has pretty much destroyed america and any good that it stood for and he needs to pay not as retribution on him personally, although he certainly deserves all of that but we do need to take a stand before the world community. nothing less than bush and his cronies behind bars will do.

As a pagan representation, the peace symbol has its origins in the ancient Norse-Germanic alphabet known as Futhark. This, the language of the runes, was not displaced until the Fourth Century when Arian bishop Ulfilas (AKA, Wulfila) created a new Gothic alphabet based on Greek. In the original runic language, the cross element of the peace symbol first appeared in an upright orientation as the "algiz" rune. According to Carl D. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols, the sign "is possibly associated with moose.... In the family system [the rune] stands for man." According to the same dictionary of symbols, when inverted, as in the peace symbol, the Algiz rune "is supposed to have been used by Germanic tribes as Todesrune, the rune of death. In the family system it means man dies." In fact, the rune used as a symbol of death was employed by the Nazis during World War II. In 1970 the GOP, in its newsletter Political Potpourri, published the image of a Nazi propaganda poster that prominently featured the inverted Algiz rune.

It's disturbing enough that the central element of the so-called peace symbol has been known since ancient times as the symbol of death and that it was used to signify such by the Nazis. But the symbol has also been used as an anti-Christian symbol. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero, Saint Peter was condemned to death by crucifixion. Saint Peter, though, could not bear to be crucified as Christ had been. He requested, therefore, to be crucified upside down. Nero granted his wish and the Saint was crucified, legend has it, on an upside down cross, the arms of which had been broken and were pointing toward the ground. Saint Peter is celebrated, rightly, as a great Christian martyr. But anti-Christians have frequently used the Nero Cross, essentially the peace symbol, to symbolize anti-Christ.

Yes they were around. In about 68 or so there was even a little group of those assholes in Alameda County, The land of the East Bay. I stared seeing this foot print of the chicken shit outside in front of gun shops, barber shops, and a few gas stations usually run by those with red necks.

What really frosted my nads though was a little coffee shop that did the trucks and workers in the area, and it had one outside next to the door where folks usually put up ads for donkey basketball games and flapjack festivals. the folkes who owned the place were an older Chinese couple and when I asked about it, they said that the owner of the building had put it there. Maybe as a movement to me a customer to them for a while, they removed the sign.
