Key Senate Republicans privately reviewed suggestions Thursday for raising the Social Security retirement age while limiting future benefits for upper-wage earners, officials said, as they sought momentum for legislation atop the President's second-term domestic agenda. At the same time, the prospects for swift Senate action on the controversial measure appeared to dim during the day, the result of internal GOP disagreement as well as implacable Democratic opposition to Bush's call for personal accounts under Social Security....read on

This means that the President's big project is going down the tubes. It's a big win for the democrats showing unity and strength in the party that wouldn't bend to a fundamentality disastrous plan, or lack of a plan that Bush has been pimping all over the country. I'm sure the GOP talking points will be to call the democrats obstructionists, but as I've said all along...you can't obstruct insanity. He made a big mistake by starting on this endeavor with a lie. Social Security will not be bankrupt in 2041. Also quite puzzling is the fact that he has had almost thirty years to think up a proposal and to enter the Social Security debate without one showed just how drunk with power he has become. There are many ways for an alcoholic to act out on his or her addictions without using alcohol. This was one of them.
